My dog is eating cat shit

queenofthenorthwest · 27/05/2021 20:30

My dog has started (2days in a row now) to get cat shit out of the litter box when I am out.

It is vile.

How can I stop this.

I can't realistically block off the litter tray.

Can anyone help me? It's knocking me sick.

It's only when we are out and by our he's left for an hour max.

He has a kong toy. He has treats when we leave. The king toy is one where you add paste or peanut butter to so he does have that.

Can anyone help me please

Get a top-entry litter box

queenofthenorthwest · 27/05/2021 21:08

I can't it's boxed in already. There is no where else to put it

You know it is especially prized? It's like a five star restaurant meal just waiting there to be inhaled...

queenofthenorthwest · 27/05/2021 21:25

Don't. I'm ready to kill him. He did it once as a puppy about a year ago. Then now two days in a row.

Walked in to a half eaten turd on the tiles.

He is vile.

Clean the litter out more often.

Wolfiefan · 27/05/2021 21:27

We have the litter tray in the hall. Dog gate between dog and turds!
You have to find a way of keeping the dogs away from the tray. Tray upstairs?

StormcloakNord · 27/05/2021 21:27

My two do this.

I've learned to just... let it happen.

I live in blissful ignorance that they are nice normal dogs who don't eat cat shit.

🤢

StormcloakNord · 27/05/2021 21:28

I will say tho I don't have a litter tray - they just eat it out and about or from the cats garden poops.

DogsSausages · 27/05/2021 21:29

Can you get one of those self cleaning litter trays. The poo gets sifted out. Eating a baby nappy is even worse.

Crimblecrumble1990 · 27/05/2021 21:34

Cat poo is my beagles absolute favourite thing to eat. He will sniff one out miles away and gobbles it up like a madman. His breath reeks after and it's fairly unpleasant but nothing we can do about it.

Fluffycloudland77 · 27/05/2021 22:09

Yes, robot litter tray.

This is so grim. No wonder cats look down on dogs.

spotcheck · 27/05/2021 22:12

I think it is a delicious treat for them.

I mean, chocolate kills them, but we go nuts for it, so....🤷

tabulahrasa · 27/05/2021 22:21

Put the dog in a different room...

Prettybubblesintheair · 27/05/2021 23:37

Honestly you need to lower your standards! Yes it is gross…but all dogs will do it given half a chance! We have a husky who will turn his nose up should we have the audacity to give him dry food but will happily chow down on his own poop, cat poop, rabbit poop and fox poop is a particular delicacy as far as he’s concerned. Unless you block the tray off or lock him in a different room it’s likely to happen, you can’t stop it. It’s not a stress thing, dogs are just disgusting little fuckers!

If it makes you feel any better a friend of mine had a little sausage dog that realised with great delight that it could eat its own AS IT WAS COMING OUT! Same dog was also prone to eating dirty nappies and was thrilled when her little boy started potty training as it meant there was often a full potty to eat/drink from Envynot envy…

Dogs are grim!

Bythemillpond · 27/05/2021 23:49

Ddog used to sit licking her lips when dc were on the potty.
I used to have to grab it away from her otherwise she would gobble the contents. Dc thought it was hilarious and dreadful all at the same time.
Cat poo I would just leave and look the other way

cupsofcoffee · 28/05/2021 06:54

It's totally normal. I know it's vile to us - but dogs are pretty vile in general Wink

Mine loves a good kitty nugget buffet - he also loves sheep poo, cow pate (especially if he can run around with them in his mouth like a frisbee) and rolling in dead birds Hmm

ClareWilsonNS · 28/05/2021 18:54

I have a cat and we were thinking of getting a dog. Not now.

juneybean · 28/05/2021 18:56

Not sure how true this is but it's a protection thing, clearing the smell of the cat from predators 😂

Mumelie · 28/05/2021 18:59

Our very elderly dog still manages to move the chairs and table leg to get to the covered litter tray! Then proceeds to have a horrendous upset stomach every time he treats himself to kitty au d'oeuvres 🤢
We will not be getting another dog

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 28/05/2021 19:04

yeah, they just regard it as an all you can eat buffet...cat poo and crunchy litter...like Ferrero Rocher

Some dogs are more honourable about it than others...all the labs and retrievers we have had simply cannot wait, like a signal you know that cat has used the tray before you hear the digging cos the dog is meerkatting!

The GSDs we have had have all been less alert to the actual doing, but passing a tray with a poo they would probably not leave it there.
Current GSD prefers his from the garden, so i know the second he goes out and makes a beeline for the clematis that the cat has left us a message

SummerSazz · 28/05/2021 19:07

Mine loves any kind of poo and sniffs out any cat poo in the garden well before I can find it. In the house we have the litter tray up on the surface in the utility room where she can't get at it

Furries · 29/05/2021 04:07

Blimey, am surprised at how many think this is ok!

Not quite sure what you mean by the tray is boxed in? Is there really nowhere else you can have a litter tray that is covered? Or no way of gating off between where dog is while you’re out and the litter tray?

I remember a quote I saw ages ago along the line of why cats are superior - dogs will shove any old tat they find in their gobs, cats are far more selective and fussy!

Joking aside, you need to find a solution. Not sure of your home layout, but the litter tray needs to be somewhere the dog can’t get to. Even if it’s in your bathroom. If it happens while you are out, where is the dog during that time? Free reign of downstairs or shit in one room. Either way, tray needs to be elsewhere.

Furries · 29/05/2021 04:09

*shut in one room - not shit!

cupsofcoffee · 29/05/2021 04:27

Blimey, am surprised at how many think this is ok!

Well, nobody is saying it's not grim, but it is normal and it's also harmless so it's not a battle worth fighting imo.

Dogs are naturally attracted to smelly things and cat poo is pretty high up in the stakes. They also love cat food for a similar reason!

I don't like that mine eats poo but it comes with the territory when I make him live with three cats Wink
