Rag doll kitten price

We are in the process of adopting a kitten. I've contacted breeders and am on their waiting list. Am also looking at private sellers. What is a realistic price I can expect to pay please?

Private sellers are asking for 1000 quid but many of them don't have pedigree papers not even for their parents. But the whole family can be viewed and they all LOOK proper rag dolls!!

I'm not fussed about pedigree lines and am happy with a cross. But what price should I be realistically aiming for?

Help please MN cat parents!

Anyone please?

There’s going to be inbred health conditions with any pedigree so I’d go for one with papers and dna tested for health problems peculiar to the breed.

An ill cat can wrack up vets bills in the thousands and then the £1k purchase price doesn’t seem such a bargain.

Amrapaali · 27/05/2021 19:48

Thanks @Fluffycloudland77 so the 1k purchase proce is par for the course then? Reasonable if the raggie comes with proper papers and genetic/health checks?

Yes, I’m afraid their not cheap but it’s worth doing due diligence rather than setting yourselves up for heartbreak.

There will be a breed society with a list of breeders and they should state which conditions they test for.

My half Ragdoll (mum) cost me £600 a few months ago. He's very cuddly & 'floppy' when lifted, loves company & is great with our kids....which is why I wanted a Ragdoll. I was looking at £1400ish for a fully bred Ragdoll & waitlists.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/05/2021 09:51

Be very careful it's not a kitten farm. I adopted two absolutely beautiful Persians who had been used as breeding queens in a kitten farm. Apparently the lady was perfectly convincing as a breeder. But the conditions they were kept in were terrible. One of mine died at 8 from a hereditary heart condition. And out of six who were rescued only two are still alive.

SpinachAndMushroom · 28/05/2021 09:58

Wow, we have a one year old pedigree Ragdoll with papers and he cost the equivalent of £320, I can’t believe they are so expensive in the UK! He’s a beautiful little (or now not so little) boy who gets on really well with our 6 year old cavalier King Charles dog. He’s a very gentle and laid back boy, not a big cuddler but very tolerant of whatever gets dished out to him. Great little personality for a cat.

Amrapaali · 28/05/2021 19:19

Oh @Toddlerteaplease that is horrible Angry a pox on all these unethical sellers

I've delved a bit into Pets4home listings. I'm really losing my will to live. The dishonesty, the brazen cheek of asking for hefty deposits without even sending as much as a video of the kitten!!

Thanks for your replies all. Much appreciated Smile

£325??!! Where do you live @SpinachAndMushroom? I'd gladly pay 325 twice if I can get a healthy and happy kitten! The prices here are 1400 and rising! Utter madness

No ideaabout Ragdolls, but my Dd just got a pedigree Maine Coon with papers for £750.

Amrapaali · 28/05/2021 19:25

Ooh nice @IHaveBrilloHair My sister has a couple of majestic Maine coons. Are they good for allergy sufferers?

No idea on current pricing (I paid £450 for a fully registered, health tested one 6 years ago) but they are the best cats. She was the loveliest, kindest, gentlest most beautiful little thing until she met her untimely death (car incident Sad).

tentosix · 28/05/2021 19:57

My DS bought on for £1200 a couple of years back. Pickles is very beautiful though, cream seal point I think it's called.

So sorry, but aren't they supposed to be purely indoor cats? DS says they would sit in the middle of the road and wonder at the huge thing approaching. I think they are a bit thick.
IHaveBrilloHair · 28/05/2021 20:54

Dd's Maine Coon will be an indoor cat as she lives in a top floor flat.
Lots if photos here.

Gubanc · 28/05/2021 21:11

Kitten needs to be registered (please make sure they don't have you over this), vaccinated, microchipped and tested for breed specific illnesses.

Amrapaali · 28/05/2021 21:56

Yes agree with @tentosix aren't they indoor cats? All ads I've seen very specifically menti0n this.

Unless it's a different kind of car incident. Sorry @catsarebetterthandogs9 Sad

IHaveBrilloHair · 28/05/2021 22:32

It's possible that her cat accidentally got out.

LittleCatDog · 28/05/2021 23:48

I have a ragdoll X British SH and he's a housecat. I paid £250 but that was over 5 years ago, they've gone up so much recently! He really is stunning, bright blue eyes and white fur with a faint striped tail. Ragdolls have a beautiful nature!

OohKittens · 29/05/2021 10:57

Please save yourself the heartbreak and get a health tested pedigree. We lost a half ragdoll to hcm. I have two registered pedigree ragdolls. I also have a registered pedigree Norwegian forest and last June he cost £700. Genuine breeders haven't inflated their prices. Also your insurance can be void if you put a cat down as a certain breed but you don't have paperwork to verify it. Unless registered they are domestic shorthair. Ragdolls can be prone to so much so it is important to get a kitten who has been bred responsibly.

catsarebetterthandogs9 · 29/05/2021 11:10

Yes, sorry didn't explain. She was an indoor cat who slipped out without me realising Sad

Amrapaali · 29/05/2021 11:13

Thanks @OohKittens the insurance bit is good to know. I am also.looking at Siberian Nevas as they are a bit more hardy health wise.

Video call with breeder tomorrow. Squueee! Can't wait. £1300 but happy because kitten will come with papers, vaccinations and 3 vet checks and will be handed over only when it is around 13 weeks old.

Would also have been happy with a mix (and friendlier on the wallet!) But seriously the jokers I've spoken to Hmm has put me off random private sellers

Thanks @Gubanc is there a comprehensive list of paperwork I need to ask for? I can't seem to find anything online.

Pedigree regn (kitten will be put on Felis Brittanica Fife) records of health checks, neutering, anything else?

I can tell you only what I provide with my (different breed) kittens: insurance, pedigree, reg docs, health guarantee for inherited diseases for a year, food samples, health tested parents, advice and included in the contract that I'm the first call if you can't keep kitten for whatever reason.
Gubanc · 29/05/2021 11:41

All breeders are different in what they provide.
