Where do you keep your litter tray in your house?

As the title really, where do you keep your litter tray in your house?

I have always kept it in a spare bedroom, out of sight, smell etc.

My OH moved in with his cat over a year ago and always kept his litter tray in the bathroom, as he says that’s where the toilet is so the cats toilet should be in there too.

But I use the bathroom and don’t want to see or smell the tray whenever I’m in there. Plus guests too.

He thinks I’m odd keeping it in an unused bedroom. But I think he’s odd wanting to keep it in a room we shower and clean ourselves in!

Wondered what others views are? Are they both reasonable spots for it?

Thank you Smile

I have two in the hallway.

cookiecreampie · 25/05/2021 14:50

It's in the kitchen by the back door in a space under the worktop so it's not in immediate sight.

Mumdiva99 · 25/05/2021 14:53

Kitchen and hallway.

4vrBubbles · 25/05/2021 15:03

Under the stairs in the cupboard, put a cat flap on the door.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 25/05/2021 15:10

one on the landing, one in the bathroom (upstairs) and one in the dining room and one in the downstairs toilet that is never ever used! (litter tray, not toilet! )
We have two cats, the bathroom and landing one are idiotcat's favourites, with the landing one taking up third place. His sister prefers the dining room one or the bathroom, with the landing one again in third place!
It all seems very complicated tbh!

ViperAtTheGatesOfDawn · 25/05/2021 15:21

Main one in a sort of hallway next to the kitchen that could be a room if it wasn't full of junk...

Another in the cat's spare room that she doesn't use but I've left as it's handy to have a spare for just in case.

Imkindreally · 25/05/2021 15:29

In the downstairs bathroom - it’s the only place with space

ineedaholidayandwine · 25/05/2021 15:35

Downstairs toilet.
Moving soon and will go in a cupboard in the utility room (with cupboard door removed)
It would have gone back in the downstairs toilet but the one in the new house is too small

cat8986 · 25/05/2021 15:47

Thanks for your replies everyone. It’s good to know that the general consensus is wherever there is space, which makes complete sense.

Our spare room will be a nursery at some point in the near future so will have to move the tray. Bathroom it will have to be!
Or maybe we could trial the dining room as we hardly go in there. Space is tight as I live in a terrace.

Landing though bathroom would be better. I hate it.

NeonStones · 25/05/2021 16:17

Bathroom for us, there is space there. I would maybe have it in a spare room if we had one. I move it into the hallway if I’m having a bath but it doesn’t bother me otherwise.

wearetheweirdosmr · 25/05/2021 16:48

Bathroom upstairs and utility room.
We had one in the lounge for W hike as that was the room new kitty was kept in

Prestel · 25/05/2021 16:59

In our current house the litter tray is in the conservatory but I've previously kept one in a corner of the kitchen. I wouldn't be keen on having one in the main bathroom, though. Quite apart from the fact I don't want to be showering and drying next to a poo-filled tray, it's the one room of the house where the door needs to be shut from time to time making it less accessible and convenient to a cat in urgent need of a wee.

Trinacham · 25/05/2021 17:09

We have them in 3 separate areas (3 because the 'rule' is one per cat, + 1 extra) for 2 cats. So one is downstairs in the hall, one on the stairs (we have a quarter landing) and then one upstairs on the landing outside the bathroom. Personally I hated the thought of littertrays round the house but we have a fairly small home to work with and realised that cats can be very lazy and choosy about where to go. One of them still chooses to pee in the bath sometimes..

EllieQ · 25/05/2021 17:10

Bathroom, as there is no space anywhere else (small terraced house). It can be awkward - sometimes you find yourself waiting until the cat has has finished, other times you come out to discover the cat waiting patiently outside for her turn Grin

If we had a utility room or a downstairs toilet, it would go in there.

BeaMinus · 25/05/2021 17:11

Utility

Vyff · 25/05/2021 17:32

In the bathroom because we don't have anywhere else to put it.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/05/2021 18:01

Kitchen. Nowhere else for it.

tentosix · 25/05/2021 18:28

Don't have a cat or a litter tray, but it sounds gross and disgusting to have it in the kitchen where you prepare food. It's like having a toilet next to the cooker.

SimonJT · 25/05/2021 18:30

I have one in the en-suite and one in the livingroom which is inside a cupboard that has a catflap on the side, the way its positioned means you can’t see the access point when walking around the room etc.

cupsofcoffee · 25/05/2021 18:31

Living room. There's nowhere else to put it. The bathroom is way too small and they don't have free access to upstairs while we're out, and I don't agree with litter trays in the kitchen.

LST · 25/05/2021 18:35

The utility room next to the loo. It used to be in the kitchen in my old house. It was a really large kitchen.

SoLongSister · 25/05/2021 19:23

In the cat room (spare room downstairs). Although neither cat use a tray anymore.

That’s exactly what I envisage happening if we kept it in the bathroom, the cat waiting for us or us waiting for the cat! When my OH lived at his house and kept the tray in the bathroom, I’d see the cat miaow and sniff round the bathroom door waiting to use the toilet if he was in there. At the time I didn’t think it was fair that the cat didn’t have access whenever she wanted, but I guess they learn to be patient and hold it if they need to.

We used to keep ours next to the downstairs loo - I used to scoop the poo into the toilet until I learned you aren’t supposed to do that!

Then it was in the spare bedroom on the grounds it was least used room in the house (stuck it on landing when we had guests).

Now we don’t have a spare room or a downstairs loo, just got a new cat and haven’t decided on a permanent home for it yet.
