How vocal is your cat?

I don't mean general conversation Grin but more 'announcements'. Kloppy has always been an exuberant cat and likes to keep me informed of his every move. He bursts into the house with a flourish and a dramatic squeaky 'I'm BACK!!!' He scoffs his food with appreciative nom nom noises. He charges up and down the stairs making a delighted 'mmmmeeeeeeppppp' noise before eventually flopping on the floor and letting out an exhausted grunt like a dying seal He headbutts me when I'm sleeping and if I don't respond quickly enough he purrs full blast down my ear until I wake up and cuddle him Hmm

Ours is more of a conversationalist. If we ask he what she wants, she always responds. It is very to and fro. So we know when she wants to talk and that is when we talk to her.

JoanOgden · 22/05/2021 19:48

Sometimes mine likes a bit of a chat. She also has a special miaow when she's hungry, and another for when she wants me to sit down so she can sit on my lap. Then there's the chattering noise when she sees a bird, the hideous yowl when she spots her adversary the tabby, and the mrrp noise to say hello...

YesItsMeIDontCare · 22/05/2021 19:51

50% gobshite, 50% silent stealth ninja.

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/05/2021 19:56

Our departed boy was a Bengal so it was a constant running commentary including a special shouty miaow to let us know he was being naughty.

And silence when he was being REALLY naughty. The silence was worse.

lljkk · 22/05/2021 20:05

Since his brother died 2 months ago we get lots & lots of announcement meowing. Very funny. Just checking who else is in the house, maybe?

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 22/05/2021 20:12

idiot cat is very vocal...likes to chatter too and fro if he comes in from being outside, lots of prupps and perppy noises, and full on outraged miaows
He also likes to yowl like a banshee in the dead of night...he's always done this even since a kitten....like he is just wanting us to know he is allllllll allllloooonnneeeeeeeee. He could sleep with any number of people but just likes to shout in the dead of night before deciding.

latterly he has been shut out of our room for tryign the cat olympics from the bed to the dressing table to the chair, to the windowsill, raking the curtains open, trying to get under the blind, and all other assorted permutations. He is a shite.

His sister likes to announce her rentry to the house and will call out until she sees someone...shouting back in response is absolutely NOT good enough, if you are upstairs she will shout all the way up until she sees you.
She also likes to know where her brother is and he likes her not to know so that's no end of fun Hmm He will curl up really small and totally ignore her....we know he can hear her cos his ears track her shouting

Ours is like a cockerel needs to ensure every is awake and up in the mornings, she has to go around and check.

Same after every proper sleep she's had.

Heronatemygoldfish · 22/05/2021 20:26

One of mine has a yowl like a corncrake when she wants food. The other is not as vocal when it's food time. However, if he's caught something, he comes in the flap shouting with whateveritis in his mouth. It's unmistakeable and I have learned to run and intercept before he drops a live mouse in the middle of the hallway.

Moonface123 · 22/05/2021 20:26

My blue eyed boy " Alfie" can miow for England. He does it twenty four seven, in the house and outside. l think he is part Siamese, he is very affectionate, l love him to bits but you need a lot of patience.

helpfulperson · 22/05/2021 20:35

I have a father and son pair. Dad only vocalise if there is a serious problem like I've forgotten to top up the water dish. The son, who is around a year, vocalise every thought that crosses his pretty little head. I worry if he comes in the cat flap silently as that usually means his mouth is full. He does however have a very peculiar meow for when he is in trouble, for example when he got his foot stuck in the cat flap.

Toddlerteaplease · 22/05/2021 20:42

Cheddar has an opinion on everything. And announces her presence. Since her sister died. Magic has gone from mute to quite bossy when she wants to be.

CMOTDibbler · 22/05/2021 20:55

We have 3 cats. dcat1 is elderly, has ishoos, and only shouts when she wants something. Which, tbf, is many, many times a day. Dcat 2 and 3 are brother and sister and have a huge amount to say for themselves and are incapable of moving without chatting about it. And even when still, emit a range of meeps and other noises. They are banned from our bedroom at night because the noise is just too much, as well as the risk of finding a squirrel corpse in the bed

BryanAdamsLeftAnkle · 22/05/2021 21:04

I have 2, both never shut up. I'm losing my tiny mind. The girl is 19, sits in front of me and demands full attention. She schats and demands breakfast or dinner and that's really the only time she chats.

The idiot on the other hand.... Yowls when he comes through the cat flap until he finds me. Yowls for dinner, chats to me day and night. I don't always reply.

I know when he comes through the cat flap with a full mouth because he announces it in a muffled tone that has me running to stop him....

What's that I hear you say? Get rid of the cat flap.... Well I locked the cat flap once... He ripped it off.... I had a big hole in the door until I could get the replacement delivered.

Utter git. 8kg of cat. I dream of how quiet life used to me.... Then he makes eye contact, chats to me and does the slow blink.... Bloody overlord...

NotanotherboxofFrogs · 22/05/2021 22:04

My two are very quiet, hardly ever a peep out of either of them, I chat away to them all day every day anyhow.

They can make lots of sounds but only as soon as put in to a car and it's howling central but as I don't drive anymore the only time they go in the car is to the v-e-t so are expressing disapproval but by the time I unload the carrier's and get into the waiting room it's back to silence again. Occasionally a bit of noise when play fighting but that's usually because someone has put a paw somewhere they shouldn't.

therocinante · 22/05/2021 22:07

One of mine yells all day long at everything. I've never heard a cat capable of this decibel level before... He's quite vocal generally, he meeps if you kiss him, he grumbled and mews in his sleep, he'll hold a conversation if you talk back to him, he announces his entrance to the house/any room with a BRRRRP. The other two are quiet, just the occasional "I need help cos I'm stuck on the wardrobe" cry.

FlatteredFool · 23/05/2021 00:07

Our cat (who isn't ours but identifies as ours and is ours otherwise we are catphobes) jumps off the gate of his house and bounds at speed across the cul de sac with a meh eh eh eh eh and loud vocalisations that I assume are complaints of how terribly he's treated at his actual home (where he gets wet food, dry food, tuna, ham and lots of love). His relative who also identifies as our cat does the little merp noise and stands on her back legs to head bump my hand repeatedly especially at breakfast time. She wonders aloud how she got up on top of the wardrobes, the high shelves, the boiler cupboard, the big trees, the curtain pole and is a general pain. She wakes me up at 4-5am by clawing the bed then I go downstairs to let her out and she sits on the top landing having a leisurely wash ffs.

ReviewingTheSituation · 23/05/2021 00:15

I thought ours was a weirdo for the amount of noise we get - but now it turns out maybe our old cat was the odd one for not being so vocal.

She likes to shout loudly when she comes in, and will keep going until you engage in conversation - not always the most convenient when we're both working and trying to concentrate on Teams calls! She particularly likes to announce that she's back in during the dead of night - plenty of howling and yowling to let you know that she's in (with or without a mouse...) and that she's on her way upstairs to collapse on the bed for a big sleep.

She's also very conversational at food time - I love having a little chat about what flavour pouch she would like, and how hungry she is!

hilariousnamehere · 23/05/2021 00:18

Ha! Wonderful thread.

DNinjaCat says hello whenever she sees me, chirrups around the house, shouts for her breakfast/lunch/dinner/second breakfast/second lunch/second dinner, shouts again if the biskits are empty, and mrrps at me when she's purring and cuddling me. She also likes to stand outside my office and yell for entry. She has a special 'help I'm all alone' yowl she likes to do on the landing when I'm rudely downstairs and not following her with cuddles, which also comes out when we stay at my mum's - except there it's to tell me she's found and used the litter tray Hmm

DFluffyCat is on the whole much quieter, but she has a special small noise for asking for cuddles, another for disapproval if I've been out too long, and a super loud purr. and also a very particular meow which means "mum, I am about to have poo related issues". Usually when I hear that I know I'm going to be confronted with a rogue poo or one that's stuck halfway out Envy not envy!!

Love their furry faces!

wigwoo · 23/05/2021 00:55

Mine has this kind of alien purr miow she makes just before she runs off

Very vocal in general - chatters when she sees birds and squirrels or other cats
Miows when I talk to her
Miows when she enters a room
Miows when I stroke her

DShrute · 23/05/2021 01:11

Mine is currently yowling loudly at the front door to be let in. It's 1am and I am in bed. She has a perfectly useable cat flap, just choosing not to use it at this particular time. I am ignoring her, but will have to give in for the neighbours' sake.

TaraR2020 · 23/05/2021 01:18

Ah I love this thread. My childhood cat used chat away to me all day...I was a chatty child so quite happy. We'd tell each other all our news and woes and he used to come for walks with me and chat the whole way showing me his favourite hedges 🥰

Two of my loudest cats have been deaf...One genetically so and one from age; she became comically loud as her hearing disappeared.

Current cat has been determinedly silent except when gets shut in a room when he emits the sweetest and most pathetic squeaks but is finally finding his voice and letting out the odd little chirp of pleasure

AnnieSnap · 23/05/2021 01:35

We have two Siamese, so very. They only ‘talk’ when they have something to say though, so it’s not annoying as some people think Siamese are (they only get that way when people keep them cooped-up). They have lots of tones and styles of meow depending upon what they are trying to communicate.

SanFrancisco49er · 23/05/2021 01:42

We have 2 bengals and it's non stop when they are awake. The boy cat is the biggest softie in the world to us but SO aggressive with other cats so he often sits and howls in the back garden to announce himself. It's so embarrassing. I just hope the neighbours can't identify what it is and which garden it's coming from.

I can have actual conversations with them both, they have a very developed and complex range of vocals that tell me clearly what they are thinking (ie what they want) at any given moment.
And I swear the girl cat thanks me, she has a very specific miaow for when I get something right and have pleased her.

Toilenstripes · 23/05/2021 04:27

I’ve said before my old boy was like the town crier. Hear ye, hear ye all the way through the cat flap, a chirrup at the bottom of the stairs which I had to answer otherwise he would come running up and launch himself on the bed. My new girl is also a launcher, and makes a cute “incoming!” sound but not a meow. She loves to chat when she’s in the garden and I’m inside looking out. “Stay right there so you can open the door while I ignore the cat flap.”
