Now he's killing squirrels...

My 2 year old cat has started bringing me dead animal gifts. Countless mice, 2 birds, a fish from the pond, now a squirrel!!
He's standing outside with it in his mouth waiting to be let in.
Any ideas how to stop this.
Is it food related?
Incidentally He's constantly hungry.
Badgers for food all the time, eats through tin foil and the bread bag if its left out, he's even worked out how to press the catch on the bin to eat leftovers !!
Help !!!

It's a greedy bugger, think it may be pregnant. Costing me a fortune in nuts!

QueenPaw · 17/05/2021 17:29

My cat just covered his eyes and ran off after seeing that pic
He says best to bring mama a nice leaf or something, not dead things Grin

inmyslippers · 17/05/2021 17:33

That is one hard working cat

motogogo · 17/05/2021 17:33

Good going getting a squirrel, my ddog did as a youngster (didn't kill it though) haven't seen many others do though

2bazookas · 17/05/2021 17:40

@justanotherneighinparadise

God that’s awful!!!
It's a gift to you; thank him nicely :-)

If he's eating wildlife he will need very regular worming (if he's got a lot of intestinal worms that could explain the big appetite). Drops on the back of the neck are the easiest method.

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/05/2021 17:42

Tabbies are well built cats, he’s fast as fuck though to get a squirrel.

Nothing you can do, cats gonna cat. He’s obviously got a high prey drive, lots of playtime would tire him out.

Silverparting · 17/05/2021 17:43

We once had one who decapitated two squirrels. He bought us doves, rats, Magpies. His old owners said he even had their iguanas.

He remained a prolific hunter throughout his life, but downsized to songbirds and mice in his latter years.
Nothing would stop him sadly.

Silverparting · 17/05/2021 17:45

Brought. He didn't buy us vermin, although he was the smartest cat I ever knew, would knock the neighbour's doors, so not putting anything past him. Grin

minniemoll · 17/05/2021 17:45

One of mine brought a magpie in once. They do aspire to squirrels but thankfully they've not succeeded yet.

Blabla81 · 17/05/2021 17:52

Ours caught a baby snake a few weeks ago. I’ve also found a squirrel tail and head on the lawn - yuk. We’ve also had bats flying around the house courtesy of the cat, frogs, moles, you name it.

amylou8 · 17/05/2021 17:55

One of mine has a thing for slow worms (yes I know they're protected, I have tried to tell her). Scares the life out of me keep finding 'snakes' all over the house. A squirrel is impressive thought. You've got a proper cat there.

@QueenPaw what a clever cat 😂😂

user1498572889 · 17/05/2021 18:14

My cat used to kill squirrels and he looked just like your cat. I asked my vet how I could stop him and the vet was amazed I wanted to stop him. She said if I didn’t want him she would have him. Squirrels are vermin apparently and the cat was doing a good job.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 17/05/2021 18:19

@wigjuice

The squirrels take the piss here, I'm sure they have a death wish. Tease my cats mercilessly. Have you checked him for any scratches or wounds?
Great picture Grin
IsFuzzyBeagMise · 17/05/2021 18:23

Good grief Clovertoast! I think I'd go into shock!!

QueenPaw · 17/05/2021 19:09

@HamSandwichKiller he's very much "friends, not food. Also why when you can cuddle with mama instead?"

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 17/05/2021 19:15

Aw - he loves you! I suggest going outside to accept his generous gift.

Just shared your photo with DP who said, "sweet Jesus, what the hell is that?"

HasaDigaEebowai · 17/05/2021 19:17

Ours catch squirrels, particularly baby ones at this time of year and then sit there crunching their heads. It’s gross. They leave the tails. If we start to feed them more it drops off a bit.

Arrierttyclock · 17/05/2021 19:27

My cat (10 months) is already giving squirrels a good run for their money. He also brought me a dead birds leg the other day then he got really really ill the next day and I had to take him to the vets because I thought he was dying. It's horrible!

Omg, you have given me a case of horrified giggles. Cats, it's a good job we love them 🙀
XingMing · 17/05/2021 19:54

Congratulations to your hunting cat.... squirrels are vermin, like tree rats with nicer tails!!

nevertrustaherdofcows · 18/05/2021 18:52

My neighbour has apparently convinced her cat to bring us the squirrels it murders. Two so far! I wonder who else he is supplying?

cctvrec · 18/05/2021 19:03

Mine doesn't hunt squirrels at all. Never have we had a bat, nor mole, nor frog. No mice. No birds.

Oh no. No dead creatures for me. I could never be so lucky.

I get dog shit bags.

Full dog shit bags.

Dog shit bags that have been dragged all the way home from whatever path they were left on or tree they were hanging in. And in the process of being dragged home, they get ripped too, often resulting in the contents being spilled out.

We've watched her bringing them back home. AngryAngry

cctvrec · 18/05/2021 19:04

Anyone want a cat? You can have the little shithead.
