When to accept failure in rescue cat rehoming?

I am absolutely devastated. I rescued a lovely 8 year old boy 2 months ago. The first 4 weeks everything seemed to go well. We introduced him slowly to our resident girl cats. We did everything we should do to make for happy cats. We have feliway plug ins, separate eating areas (plus one) not in direct sight of each other. Same for litter trays, enough for each plus one (even though the other 2 don't use them). He sleeps in my room at night with one of my other cats. They usually sleep on the end of my bed, which is their preferred place!

The last month he has been showing various stress behaviours and has been to the vet twice, as well as telephone consultations with them to try and get to the bottom of the issues. He vomits, sometimes he can vomit once a day, or twice a day. Sometimes he goes a few days with out vomiting. But he is consistently doing it. He is spraying, again sometimes every day, sometimes he will go a few days without. He sprays in my children's bedroom as well as by two of the exits of the house. I've managed to cover the bedroom so this is no longer a place he can get to. But the area is ruined and now needs a new carpet. All the online advice on cleaning is a total failure. Nothing truly works. I can't cover the area by the external doors as I can't get out the house if I do.
Another issue is that his poo is loose, and has been since arrival. He has had 5 weeks of a sensitive stomach diet. We are now about to start a hypoallergenic diet to see if that changes anything as the vet said to go to this after the initial sensitive stomach food diet didn't work.

Todays vet visit confirmed he isn't losing weight, and no obvious issues on examination. They believe the behaviours are all stress related rather than a physical disorder. Likely cause being a multi cat household.

He is otherwise quite happy in my presence. He seems confident, and seeks company. He seeks the company of my other cats. One isn't interested in him, but certainly isn't making his life in any way difficult. She just keeps herself to herself. The other cat will play with him and they can sleep next to each other etc. He is friendly to all the neighbourhood cats too. He loves it when they come in the garden. It is the only time he wants to go outside. He is an indoor cat - his choice. I wasn't aware when we got him. He simply isn't interested in going out unless it is to follow me round the garden, or to say hello to a passing feline!

I just don't know what to do. I don't want him to be anxious or stressed. The vet thinks he must be because of his behaviours, so the only solution would be to rehome him to a single cat household. Except I really don't want to. I will if it is best for him, but I've no idea how to even go about it. Or is there something else I can try that I haven't already? I've tried a lot, so feel free to fire suggestions in case you hit on one I haven't done!

Picture taken this morning of him and my other cat, stopping me from making my bed!

My previous cat vomited often which was caused by an inflammation of the pancreas. Ask your vet to do blood tests to see whether the pancreas is involved if it hasn’t been done yet.

Sorry I haven't come back for a few days.
We've been through a really traumatic few days. Our not quite one year old cat went missing on Wednesday. The last time I saw her was just before taking Toffee to the vets. I spent all day yesterday searching for her. We found her dead in a neighbours garden, 5 doors down yesterday evening. She didn't have a mark on her. But she had clearly been dead for a day or two. Possibly poisoned. Deliberate or accidental... we will never know.
We are all in pieces right now. Absolutely bereft at her loss. I just can not believe it. Grateful to have her back at least and to know what happened to her. But just so utterly sad. She had her whole little kitty life ahead of her. She was a wonderful little puss.

I will come back in a few days to chat more about Toffee. I just need to grieve for a while. RIP my baby Treacle.

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 16/05/2021 10:51

OP, I'm so sorry to hear about your darling Treacle.

Stickytreacle · 16/05/2021 11:10

So sorry to read this, it's horrible to lose them. Xx

CatChant · 16/05/2021 11:25

I'm so sorry about poor little Treacle. What a pretty cat she was, and so young.

Sometimes they can be hit by cars, run a short distance and collapse, yet not have a mark on them. Whatever happened I hope it was as fast and painless as possible.

Take care OP, I hope you can sort out the problems with Toffee.

Ellmau · 16/05/2021 16:42

Thank you for your kind messages. We have all felt bereft at her loss since Friday. I know it sounds silly, she was "just a cat". But she was our lovely, almost human cat. She had such a little personality. I can't stop thinking about her. Both me and DP are stuck on a loop of the same thoughts. We miss her terribly, and just want her back.

Since Friday, Toffee has been no different. Perhaps slightly worse. He started urinating on the floor as well as spraying. He has done it twice since Friday. The dynamic has slightly shifted with the loss of Treacle. Honey, who is much more aloof, and spends most of the day out and the night on my middle son's bed, has been in the house and in view much more. She doesn't hiss or swipe at Toffee at all, but she definitely isn't interested in him being in her social circle. If he tries to groom her, she will bat him away. He keeps trying though. He is definitely a social cat.

I'm just at a loss with him. To answer some questions, yes he is neutered. All my cats are. The vet felt blood tests not appropriate at this time. She said to switch to the hypoallergenic food. We can do the bloods and ultrasound if the food doesn't help.

Although he is insured, he isn't covered for any of this, which is really not bloody helpful quite frankly! I took his insurance out the day after these symptoms started. He came with 4 weeks free cover. Of course he was fine in those 4 weeks.... but as soon as I took my own policy out... boom!

ThisMustBeMyDream · 17/05/2021 19:56

The cost of the bloods and the ultrasound is an eye-watering £640. Hence why the vet felt trying to diet would be most appropriate as he is otherwise well. She very much feels this is all behavioural.

@Fluffycloudland77 he sprays on the exits, and he also sprayed on the chimney breast wall in my boys room 🤷‍♀️. I've covered that spot now, but the exits are trickier to cover.
We did the cystease for 2 weeks. Also zyklene. Nil effect.

@DenisetheMenace he can go outside if he wishes. He wants to be an indoor cat though. He will only go in the garden, and dislikes it if the door is closed. He generally only goes out with someone with him. He can use the cat flap as I set him up on it by shoving the poor bugger through it. He isn't a cat flap fan however. Point blank refusal to use it. Even when he got stuck outside after the door closed. He just cried until it was opened for him to come back in!
I strongly suspect he has been an indoor cat all his life. His coat, claws etc are not that of an outdoor kitty!

Oh dear I wish you were on the FB page for Somali Cats I'm sure the experienced multi cat owners could help.

I wonder if he would actually like a kitten to love and play with tbh.

RandomMess · 17/05/2021 20:10

I say that because he wants to groom and be around the other cat Sad

Gorgeouslilgirl · 17/05/2021 20:10

My advice is just give it time. He is going through his own adjustment process, fears and trauma. Maybe the smell of his pee gives him comfort and a sense of belonging?

We have many cats and dogs and most things get sorted over time. Often the process just requires gentle love and a no when they do something that is not nice like peeing where they shouldn’t or bothering another cat (our spaying male often sidles up to the female cats who then hiss at him).. Can’t rush it. 🤷‍♀️

Umbra · 17/05/2021 20:13

@ConfusedAdultFemale - have you tried dry food for longhaired cats? We have a longhaired rescue who started vomiting hairballs after his full coat grew back in. Our vet recommended the food and - touch wood - he hasn't vomited since.

ditsygal · 17/05/2021 20:15

Things we tried for a cat who sprayed were tin foil which might work near exits as cats don't like it and the bigfest difference was when we put puppypqds in one littertray (no litter) as he seemed to like to go in there much better and stopped marking around the house. Maybe encourage him outside more too so he doesnt see the exit doors as the boundary of his territory.

Umbra · 17/05/2021 20:16

So sorry to read about Treacle.

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/05/2021 21:03

The vet offered amitryptiline for my cat when he sprayed because he was highly strung.

Personally my theory is they spray in front of your eyeline when their sore from infection and on the periphery of the house when it’s a territory marking thing.

Unfortunately with the dynamic changing you’ve taken a step back with him.

Don’t worry about the grieving, it’s normal to mourn something you loved and lost.

AlmostSummer21 · 17/05/2021 21:17

I'm so sorry to hear about treacle! 💐

She looks like she had a good life with you though. Fun games to play & a Malibu & Coke!

You mentioned the elderly person couldn't have the cats back - maybe toffee is missing an old mate?
