Bolton Abbey is cruelly snaring and killing cats.

I posted this in chat, but think it should be here as well. Word needs to get out.

There are so many rescues who will trap, neuter and return. There is no need for this cruelty.

That is awful and so wrong for the cats and foxes.

Fluffycloudland77 · 25/02/2021 10:30

Oh my god, they’ve really let themselves down there. What an awful way to die.

Having seen the injuries snares do, I can't believe they're still legal. I am so angry about this - especially knowing how many rescues there was out there ready and willing to help

CatsBooksAndCoffee · 25/02/2021 14:05

Utterly barbaric. How is this even legal?

GeidiPrimes · 25/02/2021 17:52

I read OP this morning and I'm still fuming about it. There are charities like Celia Hammond who will trap and move entire colonies elsewhere, so he literally just could not be arsed. And choosing such a brutal method of killing - animals have been known to chew through a limb in an attempt to escape a snare, I cannot even begin to imagine the terror inflicted on those poor cats.

I wonder if any locals will recognise their hapless pet caught in one of the dukes snares and sues the fucker. I wonder whether his landlords, the National Trust will have anything to say on the matter.

DreamEvenBigger · 25/02/2021 18:03

I know. It makes me sad, sick and angry at the same time.

Absolute bastards.

Covidcorvid · 25/02/2021 22:42

@Fluffycloudland77

They own chatsworth too don’t they? It’s the Duke of Devonshires land.

They should ban those snares, I can’t believe they are still legal all so some hedge funders can go up there and shoot birds so inbred they are basically special needs.

Yes they do, so chats worth off the visit list now. Awful.

Sometimes it’s hard to remember we are well into the 21st century.

Fluffycloudland77 · 26/02/2021 09:38

Country people just like shooting things, if we left well alone and didn’t hunt nature would balance everything out on its own.

TheMarzipanDildo · 26/02/2021 10:25

Horrible. ‘Protecting the birds’ --because only humans should be able to murder
them-- indeed Angry

Disressingtimes · 26/02/2021 19:01

Awful Sad

Also deleting comments and reviews on Facebook and TripAdvisor
Their behaviour is appalling. I did use to love visiting Bolton Abbey but will never go again

Fluffycloudland77 · 26/02/2021 20:10

It does smack of “fuck off peasants you don’t know how the countryside works” doesn’t it.

Exactly!!

I know cats can cause local problems, but I still say that a decent reap, neuter, return policy would be a practical humane solution. Hard, but not impossible.

An no animal causes as much devastation as humans.

Oh that's their attitude neatly summed up. I'm actually shocked they don't seem to grasp why people are so upset by this
Poorlykitten · 26/02/2021 20:59

I saw this on FB, awful. I won’t be going in the future.

Fluffycloudland77 · 26/02/2021 21:05

There was a program about cats and wildlife on R4 a few years ago, even the chap from the RSPB had to concede that in this country they are not making massive inroads into the bird population but they are picking off the very old, the ill fledglings not the healthy adults.

Fledglings, mice, voles are nature’s all you can eat buffet for predators.

Poorlykitten · 26/02/2021 21:34

I’ve signed and shared the petition.

Botanicals · 26/02/2021 21:50

This is sickening, how do they sleep at night knowing the animals are dying a slow and agonising death in these traps. Uneducated thugs.

Botanicals · 26/02/2021 22:23

Awful for the foxes too, not just the poor cats, all sentient beings who experience pain and fear.

Moondust001 · 26/02/2021 22:35

I do not agree with the snares, nor with grouse shooting - and as "a country person", no I bloody don't like shooting things or riding to hounds. But what exactly would be the point of neutering and releasing feral predators back into the environment when the purpose of this is to protect, not grouse, but endangered bird species? Will you be suggesting that they also have their teeth pulled so they can't kill these rare species, or are you townies going to run classes on how to be a vegetarian feral cat?

Finding a better way, yes that's definitely something that we can all subscribe to. But the greatest threat to the environments of rare species in this country, as elsewhere, is not country people, but the rapacious demand for building land by urban dwellers.
