Feral in from the cold.

Fat Sam has decided that tonight is the night that the cold is too much.
This old man has been ruling the local area for at least 6 years. He’s fathered numerous kittens with Mrs cat (who refuse to come in from the cold, but does have a katden).
They both have meals together under our garden bench.
In November he accepted a cat bed by our back door and this week the addition of a hot water bottle.
So far my five have just looked at home and rolled over and gone back to sleep.
Fingers crossed for a peaceful night. I wonder what my chances are at getting him to vet the his week are.

Feral in from the cold.

Very sorry to hear about Fat Sam - but you've made his last few weeks comfortable, and it's very telling that he decided to move in with you at the end. Flowers

HaHaVeryBunny · 08/02/2021 14:44

Sorry to hear this.
You gave him a loving, warm, happy life towards the end.
And you are fantastic for doing so.
Take care x

Bargebill19 · 08/02/2021 15:02

Thank you all. He’s over the rainbow bridge now, probably tummy up basking in the warm sunshine. He was so trusting and loving and he’s left a massive paw print on my heart.

Thanks

I'm so sorry OP. Hugs to you for making sure he was comfortable and warm in his last days. Its the kindest and hardest thing to do for our beloved companions.

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/02/2021 15:14

Oh this is awful, what caused it?. I’m so sorry.

Mumdiva99 · 08/02/2021 15:15

How wonderful he found you to give him a great last few weeks. X

ohfourfoxache · 08/02/2021 15:20

I’m so sorry Sad

You did a wonderful thing looking after him x

Confusedcatlady1 · 08/02/2021 15:24

That’s a real shame @Bargebill19. It is upsetting when they go but I hope you can take comfort from the fact that you made him feel cherished at the end and that his final days were filled with warmth and love.

Bargebill19 · 08/02/2021 15:31

@Fluffycloudland77

Kidney failure and a stroke.
I feel like I failed him, but I didn’t want him crawling under a bush or being hit by a car. He was warm and cuddled right to the very end. He stopped eating and drinking this morning. He normally ate and drank like a soldier who never knew where his next meal was coming from.
I’m cuddling his daughters like a mad woman.

How sad. I'm so glad you were there to give him such a comfortable end of life. It looked like he experienced true happiness having his own bed by the fire.

RIP Fat Sam.

Artinsurance · 08/02/2021 15:43

You didn't fail him Thanks

TeaLibrary · 08/02/2021 15:58

You didn't fail him. You made sure he was warm and safe and fed and as comfortable as possible. You loved and cuddled him and made sure his end was peaceful and painless and dignified. He went to sleep knowing his chosen person was by his side to the end. Be gentle with yourself and know you did your best to care for him.

Apileofballyhoo · 08/02/2021 16:24

Aw, OP, my eyes were prickling with the love and happiness at the start of your thread and now I have tears at the end. You did a wonderful thing, he was safe and warm and well fed and loved, and he knew it. Bless you.

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/02/2021 17:51

You could never have known that was happening inside him. He lived a good life. Mrs Cat will miss him.

@Fluffycloudland77

I live to think he did have a good life - fathered enough kittens! Mrs cat adored him. I hope she doesn’t pine away. Waiting patiently to see if she still comes for food after this. She was here this morning, but she didn’t stay or eat anything- it was literally a walk straight through and carry on her little way.

Sad news. But good to now he was loved and warm at the end.

nettie434 · 09/02/2021 16:03

You didn't fail Fat Sam at all. You gave him a warm home when he needed it and looked out for him before. It will be sad for Mrs Cat - I know you said they were very affectionate to each other.

Fat Sam trusted you with his kittens and then trusted you enough to feel safe indoors with you near the end. You couldn't have done more for him, given his independent (Lothario) lifestyle.

pinkhousesarebest · 09/02/2021 17:16

Oh my goodness, I am bawling. What a lucky end of life he had!
