What commands do your cats know?

Inspired by a thread in the dog section...what commands / words do your cats understand?

My cats know:

  • Name
  • Other cats names
  • Breakfast (time for food)
  • High five (give a high five in return for a snack. No snack = no chance)
  • Off
  • No
  • Come on (with hand pat = come here/jump up)
  • He's a good boy/she's a good girl

I think there are certain things we say that they don't fully understand the meaning of but recognise it as meaning 'love' or 'time for snuggles'. For example when my boy cat snuggles up he often looks up into my eyes and I tell him 'Are you Mummy's handsome boy?' In a certain tone and he just purrs away looking up into my eyes 😻

Has anyone else tried purposefully training cats for commands?

My first one has been the high five - which they're very good at but unlike a dog are only interested in doing it in return for a treat. They give zero fucks about doing it for praise or a pet Grin

Dreamies

Oh also:

  • Out out (means leave the room or to go outside)

Name. That’s it. Stoopid cat.

Toddlerteaplease · 19/01/2021 15:42

Magic, go and find Cheddar.
It works. Five minutes later cheddar comes flying through the door with magic in hot pursuit.
It wasn't just a fluke. I always send her out of cheddar goes Awol

WineInTheWillows · 19/01/2021 15:43

No
No!
NO!
CUSTARD, GET YOUR LITTLE KITTY BACKSIDE BACK HERE RIGHT NOW!
CUSTARD, STOP!
LEAVE IT, CUSTARD!
LEAVE IT!
LEAVE!
CUSTARD, LEAVE!
CUSTARD, JUST....
Sighs
You know what? Never mind.

... Custard doesn't respond to instructions

GeidiPrimes · 19/01/2021 15:45

You have a cat that obeys commands? I'm barely able to get a sit/stay out of the dog! Grin

Dobbyhasnomaster · 19/01/2021 15:45

Has very good understanding of....
King prawns
Ham
Chicken
Tuna
Roast beef
Ouch

Steadfastly ignores anything else!!!

QueenPawPaws · 19/01/2021 15:46

Sit
Paw
Get down
Nap
Mama

AthelstaneTheUnready · 19/01/2021 15:47

You mean their commands to me? Oh, all of them.

QueenPawPaws · 19/01/2021 15:47

And yes I trained paw and sit using a clicker Grin

forrestgreen · 19/01/2021 15:48

I wish mine understood "stop stabbing me!"

Beamur · 19/01/2021 15:48

None. Unless it suits them.

Panicpuss · 19/01/2021 15:51

Understands every word in every human language. Steadfastly ignores every single one and responds only to the rustle of a dreamies packet or the clink of a food bowl.

Oh and miaow. Because my accent needs correcting.

FrankGrillosFloof · 19/01/2021 15:52

Mine can identify the rustle of a Dreamies packet from 2 rooms away.

I’ve tried rustling other similar packets and she’s never fooled.

WinterdiscontentGlorioussummer · 19/01/2021 15:53

Foood, what's even better one of mine can say it (in my language that is Smile).

TroysMammy · 19/01/2021 15:53

His name
Yum yums - any treat
Lie down - when he's fussing around at night - he does, one me - oof!
Greenhouse is open - when he's dithering by the backdoor deciding to go out or not.
Up - on to his kitchen stool but doesn't do down as in off the work top.
Not many really he's a bit dim.

RagamuffinCat · 19/01/2021 15:53

Two out of three know their names (they are old cats so the one who doesn't isn't likely to learn now), one knows kiss and off, and one knows beg and up. Two know dinner, and the third struggles to find his food bowl even if it is next to him (same cat who doesn't answer to his name). I think we have two average intelligence cats and one below average intelligence cat, but they are all lovely in their own ways!

YesItsMeIDontCare · 19/01/2021 15:53

Leroy is clever. He understands

• No
• Cuddle?
• Go to the toilet
• Breakfast / Dinner / Supper time
• Oomies?
• Wanna brush?
• Do your paws
• D'you want to go walkie?
• Where's Daddy?
• Wanna play Killa?
• Where's Mousie?

He ignores me most of the time though. 🤷🏼‍♀️

MPForFlydaleNorth · 19/01/2021 15:54

Mine knows:
Get down
Bedtime
Settle/snuggle down
Good girl
Biscuits
She will jump up when I pat a cushion, my lap etc and get down if I tell her I need a wee!!

tormentil · 19/01/2021 15:55

kiss kiss - for a nose rub

TornadoOfSouls · 19/01/2021 15:56

Mine understands ‘wait’ when I give him a snack. He turns his head to the side to show he’s taking it seriously Grin
He knows his name but sometimes ignores me, if I really want to tell him something I add ‘listen!’ and he then pays attention.
He also understands ‘let’s go!’ means we are leaving the kitchen.
And yes, I understand all his commands too Grin

IHaveBrilloHair · 19/01/2021 15:58

Mine know precisely none, or if they do they choose to ignore them, and I let them.
I was stricter with Dd than I am with the cats Dd also ignored me Grin

GnomeOrMistAndIceGuy · 19/01/2021 16:00

Two of mine only understand 'dinner' and 'you wanna treat?' but the other understands 'kiss' and boops your forehead with his. Also, we saw this YouTube video of a woman who says 'spaghetti' to her cat and he rolls over every time, so we taught him that AND HE DOES IT!!! it's the cutest thing!

BIWI · 19/01/2021 16:00

I'm convinced ours can actually read the word 'Dreamies'
