What commands do your cats know?

Inspired by a thread in the dog section...what commands / words do your cats understand?

My cats know:

  • Name
  • Other cats names
  • Breakfast (time for food)
  • High five (give a high five in return for a snack. No snack = no chance)
  • Off
  • No
  • Come on (with hand pat = come here/jump up)
  • He's a good boy/she's a good girl

I think there are certain things we say that they don't fully understand the meaning of but recognise it as meaning 'love' or 'time for snuggles'. For example when my boy cat snuggles up he often looks up into my eyes and I tell him 'Are you Mummy's handsome boy?' In a certain tone and he just purrs away looking up into my eyes 😻

Has anyone else tried purposefully training cats for commands?

My first one has been the high five - which they're very good at but unlike a dog are only interested in doing it in return for a treat. They give zero fucks about doing it for praise or a pet Grin

I'm convinced mine know exactly what I mean, but they just choose to ignore most of themGrin

A command? What's one of them?

CornedBeef451 · 19/01/2021 16:12

I think the little fuckers understand everything I say and just choose to ignore me.

I do love them though. They appear to tolerate me.

iklboo · 19/01/2021 16:16

Commands no - words, yes Grin

Name
Other cat's name
Their nicknames
Bruv
Brekkie
Lunch
Teatimes
Sweeties
Chicky stick
Drink
Mooch
No
When you do a sharp intake of breath they know they're getting a treat

Averyhungrycaterpillar · 19/01/2021 16:17

One of mine knows kiss and come to bed (which sounds a bit odd now I've written it down!). The other one knows that "right, off you get" means enough laying on my lap now. They both know their names and both come running when we call "boys". Cats are clever little things

LemonBreeland · 19/01/2021 16:19

Ours is only 7 months old but DD has taught him to sit. He also knows his nickname, but not his actual name, as no one ever uses it. We are working on lie down now

Allergictoironing · 19/01/2021 16:32

Both understand

Suppertime
Breakfast
Tuna
Sweeties (Dreamies)
Stick (Webbox stick treats)
Their names

Boycat also understands Up, as in up on the sofa or bed for cuddles. Pretty sure Girlcat understands more than that, but chooses to ignore me.

nomorecheese · 19/01/2021 16:38

"Twirl!"

She goes round in a little circle (twirls) before we put down her food. Taught her as a kitty.

Undies1990 · 19/01/2021 16:40

My old boy knows

  • name
  • no
  • dindins
  • brush
  • out
  • toilet
  • snacks
  • kiss
  • blanket
  • up
  • down
  • drink

My favourite is "brush" - he'll rush over to where his brush lives and starts purring in anticipation. Love him so much x

nomorecheese · 19/01/2021 16:41

PILs cat used to understand "brush". She's the only cat I've known that loved being brushed. She was Siamese so didn't have long fur but if you said the word she'd rush up to the top of her cat tree/scratching post and wait for FIL to brush her and get consistently louder until she was brushed.

TyroTerf · 19/01/2021 16:49

They know all the commands, but they can only say them in Cat, not English, so I'm very bad at understanding.

They know their names (and each other's) and that's it, for words. They seem to get a fair bit from my time of voice though.

minipie · 19/01/2021 16:58

Clearly I’m doing this all wrong 😁

Mine knows “treat” and will get off the table/worktop if I clap.

Anything else is unknown. Even her name is ignored, unless accompanied by clatter of treat plate on floor.

Have to admit I’ve never tried teaching her anything else though! We got her as an adult so perhaps the ship has sailed.

LApprentiSorcier · 19/01/2021 17:03

Their names
The other cat's name
'Come and see mummy'
'Go and see daddy'
'Dreamies!'
'Brekky'
'Supper'
'Off!'
'Out!'

IDontMindMarmite · 19/01/2021 17:09

They've got commands down! It's really impressive. I understand when they want food, strokes, under blanket cuddles, litter box cleaning and play time.

sequinednostrils · 19/01/2021 17:10

Mine knows 'cuddle' , he stands on his back legs and reaches up to be picked up, then does that delicious stretch and goes all long. Only at breakfast or supper time though. He did it himself, I didn't train him.

Ceara · 19/01/2021 17:16

Sit
Breakfast
Dinner
Out
Ow, aaaargh, you little SHIT! gerroff!

IDontMindMarmite · 19/01/2021 17:33

I did try to teach them tricks because they are extremely food motivated. I tried to teach them to sit but they just mob me and eat my fingers trying to access the treats.

Whathappenedtothelego · 19/01/2021 17:33

Grin at commands. Mine at best might recognise requests.

I think he recognises a few words, helped by tone of voice and body language.

Any response is entirely on his terms, however.

wineandcheeseplease · 19/01/2021 17:36

They know the noise food pouches make, and the noise the treat tub makkes, that's it

MyHeroMakkaPakka · 19/01/2021 17:36

@BIWI

Dreamies
Grin yep the only thing mine responds to is the rattle of the dreamies packet!
VanillaSheHer · 19/01/2021 17:37

Understands all of them, obeys nowt.

ipswichwitch · 19/01/2021 17:37

Ha! Our steadfastly ignores any and all commands. She has however trained us to open the back door when she has a nibble of our hand. Clearly we’ve gone wrong somewhere!

FlatteredRhubardFool · 19/01/2021 17:41

"No, you can't eat the hamster."
"Oi, cat!"
"Go home" (she's not ours)
"Where's your sister?"

And the dreamies packet from a deep sleep and two floors awayGrin

Em3978 · 19/01/2021 17:54

Mine know their names (and that if I'm calling the other one its worth attending just in case its a treat)
'Show me?' - when they are pestering for either outside or food, they lead us to what they want. 'Show me?' a couple of days ago led to 'your jigsaw is on my seat, SHIFT IT!'
'Do you want to go out?' is often understood too (and ignored or replied to in the negative by girlcat!)
'Whats this?' is investigated in case its food.

In return, DH, DS and I have learned cat commands that roughly translate as:
'Open this door!'
'Let me out'
'Let me in!'
'Feed me'
'Gerrofff scratching my bum!'
'Give me ham'
'Go away so I can eat my brother's food'
'Go to bed and get out of my seat'
'Shift that laptop, I'm the one true laptop'
'Do not go near him, HE'S MINE!' (generally aimed at me about DH, when there's not quite enough room between us for girlcat)
'I've got a mouse! I've got a mouse! I've got a MOOOOOUSE!' (wooly and knitted, thankfully)

IHaveBrilloHair · 19/01/2021 18:02

Mine don't know their names as I only use them when they are irritating me so I'm like, "Eponine, Jemima, Matilda, which ever one you are stop it"
Then they look at me blankly and carry on scratching the couch/licking the shower curtain/existing.
