Tell me about Siamese...

Looking for advice, I'm currently trying to persuade DH that we need a Siamese in our lives!
We have a very relaxed moggy, he's amazing with our baby and toddler, but not very cuddly and loves being outdoors. I'd like a more cuddly and needy cat tbh which I understand a Siamese would fit the bill!
How would a Siamese be with our current cat? He seems unfazed by other cats and often see him sat by random ones in our garden. Also do they have to be indoor cats as our current one has access to a cat flap and don't think I could deal with a litter tray long term so perhaps one might not work in that sense!
Also any ideas on purchase price?
Thanks everyone!

You want a Burmese.
I've a Siamese but he's a scaredy cat so only snuggles me.

Teandsympathy · 19/01/2021 15:28

I loved my Siamese! She was the most gentle passive cat. We adopted her and had another cat at the time. It was a bit tense at first but they tolerated each other. Always raised a paw as a warning when passing each other but she still found the time to groom him and they would sit on the windowsill together.
She could be very clingy and demanding and slightly too invasive of my personal space but was so loving you couldn’t not love her.
Not sure on where to get them as ours was adopted in Harlem NY when we lived there. She was a house cat and even when we moved back to the UK she had no interest in going outside.

Look at Abyssinian and Somali if you want a curious lap cat.

Notashandyta · 19/01/2021 15:35

I grew up with a siamese. Lovely cat, used to sleep in my bed with me when not out. So affectionate

Ellmau · 19/01/2021 18:34

Maybe a ragdoll?

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 19/01/2021 18:39

My parents have had loads of them, usually several at a time, rescues. They’re needy, noisy and nocturnal. They’re always getting into scrapes and they’re not very sociable with each other. They’re nice and friendly though very heavy Grin.

DumpedByText · 19/01/2021 19:42

I've had a Siamese he lived for 17 years!

Prepare yourself though, mine was adorable, friendly, funny, loyal and an amazing lap cat. But he was also so naughty, he'd bring so many things in, rabbits, snakes, grasshoppers, birds all usually alive.

He's steal neighbours food they'd left out, he got in bed with a neighbour through her window! He'd steal any kind of food left out, even if it was frozen.

He was amazing with kids, and a beautiful soul. They talk none stop, are very noisy and demand a lot of attention. So if you can handle all this, go for it, I'd love another one.

flossiegrippiter · 19/01/2021 19:43

Yes I had thought about a ragdoll, my husband isn't keen on the look of a Siamese but does like ragdolls. I know they have to be indoor cats though and I'm not doing a litter tray forever, unless anyone knows ragdolls that have gone outside?

If you get any pedigree I strongly recommend you keep them as indoor cats.

This is good advice in terms of avoiding theft. But some cats don't thrive indoor only and when this happens it's a tricky call. My personal preference has been to allow these cats access to the outdoors, and I've been happy to see them benefit.
catatecheese · 19/01/2021 22:34

Burmese is your answer! Highly affectionate tend to spread the cuddles around the family rather than just bond with one person ( a Siamese trait). But still rather clingy also know as velcro cats..
They can go out love hunting etc but be warned they are naughty! mine steels underwear from naighbours!!!!!
Great with children.
Quieter and less angular looking than a Siamese so might appeal to your DH more.
Look them up they are great cats.

RandomMess · 19/01/2021 22:38

Catio is the best compromise.

It's not just theft it's fights, getting knocked down, picking up illnesses and diseases.

Mine go out because they were rescues used to going out a S one was utterly determined and after 4 months she was getting more determined not less!!! They are kept in overnight to reduce risk of being knocked down.

If I spent £600+ on a kitten they would be indoors with a catio. If you provide them with a suitable environment and plenty of play they are very happy.

Most responsible breeders will expect you to keep them indoors.

CheshireCats · 19/01/2021 22:52

Siamese are THE BEST!! Beautiful, characterful, clever, affectionate❤️
Mine get along with my moggies. I wouldn't let them out alone- they would be at risk of being stolen. We have a large catio for ours.
There are different "looks" of Siamese- traditional, classic and modern which can look quite different- so there should be one type your husband likes. And obviously they come in different colours which changes the look of them. And then there is the Orientals- the solid coloured Siamese.
Once you have got one, you will be hooked for life! Go on, do it, you will not regret it!!

Beamur · 19/01/2021 22:53

Short haired Oriental. Very Siamese like in personality - lively, curious, noisy, nosy, affectionate - similar build, so quite slender and pointy. Come with a range of coat colours.
Ours aren't indoor cats but don't like going out very much!
I would expect to pay at least £500 and would do some research into a decent breeder.

Incrediblehulky · 19/01/2021 22:56

We've got two Siamese, a chocolate pointed boy and a seal point girl and they are absolutely amazing! They are 2 now and are the most affectionate, loving, cheeky cats I've ever known! They also love the children and the children love them! They are very nosey cats though and will always interfere in anything you are doing and they do like to jump up high and run around trashing the place! Very different to my two old elderly moggies who I miss dearly. We keep them indoors and I've blocked the cat flap up now, I was worried about having indoor cats and did initially intend to let them outside when they were ready but it felt like too much of a risk and I never did and wouldn't now - they are very happy to be inside and completely used to it. If we ever moved to a house with a more substantial garden and no road then I might reconsider but at the moment they are safer inside. They are so inquisitive goodness knows what scrapes they would find themselves in outside!
I'd never had Siamese before and would definitely recommend them if you are prepared for high maintenance cats!

Terracottasaur · 19/01/2021 22:59

I’ve had several Siamese. They are the dreamiest cats - so affectionate, really confident, loads of personality. But they can be really destructive and needy if they get bored or feel deprived of attention. They’re also very noisy. I would always recommend them though! Their personalities are more like dogs than cats.

Totally agree! We got an oriental shorthair kitten this year.

She's utterly hilarious, completely adorable and loves everyone in the family- especially our older moggy who loves her back! She's noisy, inquisitive and so affectionate.

She's currently curled up next to me in bed where she spends every night. We all agree she's just a brilliant cat.

(I wouldn't dream of letting her go outside either!)

RandomMess · 19/01/2021 23:02

@Terracottasaur that is everything I've heard about them 😆 rather naughty!

Elbels · 19/01/2021 23:09

Look at tonkinese too (a mix of Burmese and Siamese). They're the absolute best combination of the two.

IHaveBrilloHair · 19/01/2021 23:11

The ones I've known have been very talkative, like constantly!

FoofOfTheWalkingDead · 19/01/2021 23:19

We inherited a purebred seal point boy when MIL went in to a care home. I'd never had one and thought he looked odd with his very wedge shaped head. I've had cats all my life and now I would get nothing but siamese in future.
He's my best pal. Full of personality, loves to play, gentle, cuddly, great with DS, very clean. Quite clingy, but I like that. DS and DH joke that he's my Daemon like in 'His Dark Materials' .
He was an outside cat but he got hit by a car and barely survived. He lost one of his back legs so now he's indoors. We take him in the back garden on a lead every day, he loves it.

FoofOfTheWalkingDead · 19/01/2021 23:20

Oh, and he's no noisier than any of the moggies I've had previously!

Beamur · 19/01/2021 23:23

Basically, all of these breeds are great pets. All of the good points of cats plus extra thrown in.
On the downside they can be quite cheeky and don't seem to understand 'no' Grin

flossiegrippiter · 19/01/2021 23:42

Wow brilliant advice everyone thank you! Definitely some good directions to research in now, it won't be a rush decision and esp with covid I feel we'll be on a breeding waiting list for a while

@FoofOfTheWalkingDead
I have a cat who lost a back leg too, she was hit by a car, but she's absolutely fine now.
This is her about an hour ago, her name is Eponine.
