Very bad ear infection

My lovely cat had some discharge from her ear and was lethargic. We had an appointment for vet but they couldn't see us until next week. She suddenly couldn't move properly, rolling her head, eyes rolling. We got an emergency appointment and they think the infection is in the bone. We are trying ear drops and anti nausea meds but this might be it for her. She is the gentlest most loving cat and I just can't imagine her not being her, sleeping on my lap all evening. The vet said if she doesn't improve in the next 5 days we will have to make some decisions. It's just horrible to see her feeling so unwell.

Good grief that’s awful. Is she in hospital.

Hemskis · 01/12/2020 20:33

No, sent back home with me to see how she gets on. They could possibly do cat scan and surgery removing bones in her skull but it sounds like she would be in pain for longer and it would cost a lot more than our insurance would cover :(

Oh that’s awful. I hope she pulls through, she must feel so poorly.

Fluffycloudland77 · 01/12/2020 20:47

Did they not offer an antibiotic injection?

Hemskis · 01/12/2020 21:26

No, just an injection to help her feel less nauseous. She does have antibiotic eardrops. Two vets examined her very thoroughly. I'm made her comfortable with me on the sofa and in going to sleep on the sofa with her tonight.

Is she eating? Chicken livers gently poached is a nice treat for poorly cats. Only once a week though.

I thought the antibiotic shot was mandatory. I wish humans could have them.

Hemskis · 01/12/2020 21:46

I'll ask the vet about it. She isn't eating at all but I've got some chicken soup for cats to try her on as chewing might be painful. She struggles to hold her head still so need handfeeding. I'm just do worried about her and feel like I've forgotten half of what the vet said as I got so upset when I realized how bad it was. We are all at work and school tomorrow, DH and I both work in schools so cant work from home. I'm going to set her up in an enclosed area with everything she needs and DH will come back at lunch to check on her.

I’d be the same too.

coastergirl · 01/12/2020 22:16

Oh I'm so sorry. I lost my lovely little cat a week ago. It's horrendous. I hope she pulls through.

Fluffycloudland77 · 02/12/2020 14:21

Has your dh been home yet?..

Hemskis · 02/12/2020 15:09

I went home at lunch and managed to get her to eat a bit. She was lucking the gravy from wet food off my finger and took a little bit of chicken too. She then groomed herself a little which I think is a good sign.

Grooming usually a good sign, as is complaining when you do her drops.

Hemskis · 02/12/2020 17:00

She does seem a little better, her head isn't wobbling anywhere near as much.

Here she is resting on her new cat bed. It was meant to be a Christmas present but I figured she should have it now.

She’s beautiful. It’s so scary when their ill and you can’t explain what’s going on.

Hemskis · 03/12/2020 06:04

I have started syringe feeding which is going quite well. Not large amount but better than nothing. She woke me up at 5 this morning wanting to get to her litter tray but she is too wobbly to go in it so peed on the rug (which is fine!). I'm going to try to adapt the tray for her with an old towel and just enough sand to make it seem like her tray.

She’ll appreciate that, having to lift a leg up while your heads wobbling everywherecabt be easy.

Hemskis · 06/12/2020 10:24

After improving a little she took a turn for the worse and passed away on our sofa this morning.

Oh no I’m so sorry, that’s awful to see. Your poor girl.

coastergirl · 06/12/2020 16:06

I'm so sorry. It's an absolutely awful feeling, still very raw for me less than two weeks on. Thinking of you.

TheLongRider · 06/12/2020 16:22

Flowers I am so sorry for you and your family.

TheSpottedZebra · 06/12/2020 16:27

Oh gosh, I'm so sorry.

I hope it's some comfort to know that she will have felt safe and loved til the end. Your care for her really comes through in your posts.

Hemskis · 06/12/2020 17:05

My sweet girl before she got ill. I was ready to call the vet as soon as they opened but she died just before which I think was a blessing. She hated going in the car I just can't stop crying.

What a beauty! Was she a 'posh cat' -ie a specific breed?

It must have been horrid for you for her to die at home, but yes it probably was a blessing as you say. My previous cat hated the car too, and i felt so (extra!) bad the day I had to drive him to the vets the last time. It somehow made it even worse that he didn't miaow much that time.

Vinorosso74 · 06/12/2020 17:26

Oh no I'm so sorry Flowers She certainly was a beauty.
