My lovely kitten is 28 weeks and going in for the chop on Wednesday. I am dreading it as we feed him before bed at midnight and put him in his room around 12:30am then let him out again at 6am. I have been gradually trying to bring his last wet meal time forward and have managed to get it to 11pm and he has dry food available all the time. He is not allowed to eat after 8pm prior to the op.

How do I manage this? How vital is it that he does not eat? Did you just stay up and cuddle your kitten all night?

Pass the port

He'll be fine, just leave him as usual and ignore the manipulation. He won't starve!

He's gorgeous!

InTheLongGrass · 05/10/2020 19:59

You put down his usual evening meal at 7pm, and empty the dishes at 8pm. He will be fine.

Fluffycloudland77 · 05/10/2020 20:05

If he vomits under anaesthetic and gets aspiration pneumonia you’ve got a very sick puss on your hands and the vet will not be happy with you.

It’s vital he starves after 8pm. We’ve all had to go through it with them.

DidSomebodySaySiamese · 05/10/2020 20:06

He is giving you both a hard stare for not agreeing that he should be held all night Grin

I best gird myself for a howling sleepless night.

What about water? Does that have to stop at 8pm too?

OP posts:
Fluffycloudland77 · 05/10/2020 20:08

That’s fine, I had to starve a Bengal boy once for neutering and twice for dentals. I am immune to it.

DidSomebodySaySiamese · 05/10/2020 20:12

Fluffy water is fine? I will give the vet a call tomorrow as I booked it 8 weeks ago and am now questioning my memory. Backlog of appts.

Also I now wonder if having a dental at the same time is a thing?

OP posts:
Fluffycloudland77 · 05/10/2020 20:13

Ask the vet if he can have water. It’s better to check.

Fluffycloudland77 · 05/10/2020 20:14

He’s too young to need a dental unless he lives on candy floss and lucozade.

dementedpixie · 05/10/2020 20:14

Why would they need a dental at that age?
Think i had to lift water first thing in the morning

DidSomebodySaySiamese · 05/10/2020 20:24

I guess the answer is he doesn’t so that’s good. I’m keeping him indoors for a couple of days post op so he doesn’t climb trees as the vet said no cone of shame.

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 05/10/2020 20:30

They shouldn't even need stitches

chocolatespiders · 05/10/2020 20:30

My boy was neutered at 14 weeks so a lot younger. But we were told to starve for no longer than 3 - 5 hours for taking in. I guess at that age he had a smaller tummy. It depends on what time the op is too.

DidSomebodySaySiamese · 05/10/2020 20:36

No stitches! What kind of magic is that. Thanks that is very settling.

He is going in at 8.30am

chocolatespiders · 05/10/2020 20:38

No stitches or cone. Bit sleepy but recovered well.

DidSomebodySaySiamese · 05/10/2020 20:40

I’m overthinking this one then! We have all taken the day off studying and work to fuss the patient Blush

I’ve had two twos done recently, one two years ago to the day (came up on by FB) and one a year ago. Both whinged a bit for their breakfast in the morning but afterwards you would have hardly have known anything had happened to them, both were back to normal, eating playing around like loons. Boy cat 1 went in with his sister and boy cat 2 went in with boy rabbit, two for one 😀

dementedpixie · 05/10/2020 20:44

They only make a tiny incision and squeeze the testicles out to remove them. You can see the op online if you want more info

slipperywhensparticus · 05/10/2020 20:44

The only one of mine who needed stitches was a full grown adult cat he had some significant dangly bits and they took the lot off the others were done as kittens no stitches no cone

DidSomebodySaySiamese · 05/10/2020 20:53

I don’t think I can stomach the video but then again I like a bit of Sporners Corner so maybe.

So he is going to be left with something to clean then, this will please him.

Head phones are very good for blocking out the “I’m starving” yeowls. Just think - it is for the best and only one night of being hungry.

Madcats · 06/10/2020 09:24

That kitten looks as if he already knows that he is destined to take liberties!

I hope last night wasn't too noisy, OP. I woke up early this morning and the meezers were so excited at an early start I think they must have woken the neighbourhood by 6am.

I asked the vet to clip their claws when they went in for the snip. Nowadays they are much more tolerant (and bigger), but it saved us a lot of accidental scratches until we let them venture outdoors.

It takes our cats several days to recognise each other after a vet trip (just thought I'd warn you in case you are a multi-cat household).

thecatneuterer · 06/10/2020 12:02

We say remove food by midnight - not 8pm - and we neuter thousands. I wouldn't worry about a late meal.

chocolatespiders · 06/10/2020 21:40

How is the cat?
