Neutering question

My lovely kitten is 28 weeks and going in for the chop on Wednesday. I am dreading it as we feed him before bed at midnight and put him in his room around 12:30am then let him out again at 6am. I have been gradually trying to bring his last wet meal time forward and have managed to get it to 11pm and he has dry food available all the time. He is not allowed to eat after 8pm prior to the op.

How do I manage this? How vital is it that he does not eat? Did you just stay up and cuddle your kitten all night?

Thanks for all the replies.

The kitten had last food at 8.30pm and is now complaining that there is no dry food out. It could be a long night! I’ve distracted him with a new water fountain - B&M £12 he loves it.

Ah yes, I've just remembered that my two didn't read the memo about being lethargic after their ops. After they had finished telling me how awful their day had been they hurtled around for hours....and hours.

I hope it went well OP.

Well that all went remarkably well. After a minor complaint of no dry food last night, he went to bed no fuss, got up and in the carrier no fuss, had the procedure and is now home and eating, playing, purring and periodically having a look at his deflated balls.

Glad all went well, OP. As a confirmed dog person, I must say he's a beautiful looking boy Smile

You just haven’t met the right cat yet.

DidSomebodySaySiamese · 07/10/2020 20:01

@Justlovedogs thanks 😊 Siamese have a few dog like behaviours. Mine follows me round the house, talks to me and plays fetch. He is my first cat, I also love dogs.

I stage mine according to human rules which is 6 hours for food and two for clear fluids. So I take the food up before I go to bed at 10. If they are last on the list hey may not go down till late afternoon and it's not fair to keep
Them starved that long.

Starve

Toddlerteaplease · 07/10/2020 20:04

He's gorgeous op!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 07/10/2020 20:09

I'm impressed/jealous with the fact that he his has 'his room'. I had to share a room with my brother until I was fourteen!
P. S. I am not a cat..

TheoriginalLEM · 07/10/2020 20:11

@Toddlerteaplease you are spot on (im a vet nurse). 6 hours is the optimum time. We tell clients to take food away after 10pm. We always feed them on recovery

Toddlerteaplease · 07/10/2020 20:18

I've always been told to take food away at 8 but I think it's not fair!

DidSomebodySaySiamese · 07/10/2020 20:41

I suspect Cheddar would not put up with any unfairness even if you tried.

So much conflicting advice on the internet regarding times I stuck with what my vet advised. They gave him food on recovery - Royal Canin - never heard of it but the vet sent us home with an extra pouch - he loved it!

As for the kitten having his own room I fully admit to having gone crazy cat lady with my only regret being not getting two kittens from the same litter.
