Can't believe i have another constipated cat!

Our old girl suffered terribly with constipation and eventually mega colon. It was a quality of life decison to have her put to sleep. Im a slightly obsessed with my new cats bowel movements and Freda seems to be having issues. She was very, very sick all day Monday. Went to the vets on Tuesday where she was examined. The vet mentioned he could feel sone faeces that was ready to come out. She was given an anti sickness jag and I was told to give her bland food for a couple of days. She's had tiny amounts of poached chicken along with a couple of biscuits which she's eating however no poops! I think the last time she went was Tues evening when I went to the shops for the chicken but with 2 cats its hard to tell!
Im not sure why im really even posting this, maybe in the hope of someone saying well she has barely eaten since Tuesday and that's why there's no poo? Am i grasping at straws?

What food does she eat just now? Does she have wet food? Does she drink water?

giantangryrooster · 24/09/2020 19:19

Our late cat died because of mega colon, so I understand why you are (over)fixated.

If your new cat is constipated, I would look at the food. Make absolutely sure she drinks water, if not feed her wet food with a little water mixed in. Brush her so it's not fur balls and give her cat malt regularly. If you think it is necessary you can mix a little crushed flea seed shells in wet food. Otherwise contact your vet.

Best of luck.

She's extremely fussy and won't touch wet food. Jusy now she's having plenty of water in her chicken which she eats but when it comes to wet cat food she just wont touch it. Same if i put water on her biscuits, she picks out the ones that are still crunchy.
Going forward im planning on poaching chicken and giving her a tiny bit with water plus her good quality dry food but just now I just want her to poo!

@giantangryrooster when you say cat malt do you mean Katalax?

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 24/09/2020 19:26

What brand of food is it? Have you tried cat soup?

giantangryrooster · 24/09/2020 19:28

Don't know katalax, but this is what I mean Smile.

When you poach the chicken save the soup and give it to her with the chicken, if she will eat tuna you can dilute it with water. Hope she has access to water always.

giantangryrooster · 24/09/2020 19:32

Oh darn, me again. Excersise lots of playtime Smile.

Plump82 · 24/09/2020 19:40

We have a bowl of water that's changed regularly and also a fountain which she'd rather play with than drink from!

Katalax i think is a brand of malt. I've just bought what you linked to. Our old girl hated Katalax but anything is worth a try!

She gets the "broth" from her poached chicken in with the food. And she has Thrive dried food. I gave her some wet food along with the chicken thinking i could fool her, but I was the fool!

She plays all day so I've no worries about that. Chasing and being chased by her brother and she loves playing fetch although I've noticed this week she hasn't done that as much. But she still runs after her ball.

Give it time, sometimes they miss a day or two. Otherwise call your vet to get advice.

Toddlerteaplease · 24/09/2020 19:57

Maybe try a car fountain. My two love theirs and drink far more than from a bowl.

Plump82 · 24/09/2020 20:32

@toddlerteaplease we have a fountain. Gilbert drinks from it and Freda plays in it!

dementedpixie · 24/09/2020 20:38

One of mine drinks out of the pond rather than the water bowl

Toddlerteaplease · 24/09/2020 21:01

Ag, sorry didn't read it properly. How about using human cups. That also went down well.

Plump82 · 25/09/2020 08:43

That actually might be an idea as they're both partial to investigating a cup of tea!

I think however, we had progress over night. Don't want to go in to tmi but consistency tells me i think it was Freda! Fingers cross and thanks for everyone's suggestions. Definitely going to keep up with the cat malt as she can be a sicky cat so maybe its hairballs as well.

Not sure we're much further forward with Freda and its starting to stress me out.

Shes eating biscuits absolutely fine, unless there's even a drop of water on them and she just walks alway. Ive continued with a little shredded chicken and shes refusing that as well.

Ive just read that cats should be drinking 60ml per kg of weigh so she'd need 180ml if on dried food alone. I haven't a clue how I'd get that much water into her when she refuses point blank on eating anything wet.

Shes absolutely fine in herself. Playing as normal now. I think she went to the toilet this morning so not particularly regular (once on Friday and once 1st thing this morning)

Ill probably take her to the vet but apart from being told she needs to eat wet food, I don't know what else they'll suggest.

You can sprinkle dried catnip on wet food.

dementedpixie · 27/09/2020 18:39

Lik e lix?
Wouldn't normally suggest this - cat milk?

Plump82 · 27/09/2020 19:11

Never even thought of cat milk but that's a good shout. She had half a lik e lix last Sunday and then was really sick on the Monday, so worried that might have caused it.

Plump82 · 27/09/2020 19:13

I'll try some catnip too. Hadnt thought of that either.

Try royal canin fibre response dry food. I managed my cat with mega colon on this very successfully

Plump82 · 27/09/2020 21:52

@badeyebri thanks for this. Im wondering if its ok to feed this without a vets consultation?

OP posts:
BadEyeBri · 30/09/2020 13:29

@Plump82 I'm a vet. No charge this time lol. Yes fine to feed but if you are still worried about her do get her checked over

Plump82 · 30/09/2020 13:55

@badeyebri thanks for the favour! ☺️

I don't want to jinx anything but we've had a bit of a break through. Turns out she doesn't like eating out a plastic bowl and also likes being fed up high. Total flook that i even worked this out. So she's been happily eating wet food with a couple of biscuits, on top of the wardrobe out a saucer. Of course now ive said this, come tea time she'll no doubt turn her nose up at her food!
But main thing is she's going to the toilet ok.

Most cats don't like plastic to eat or drink out of. Ceramic dishes that are shallow and wide are the way to go. Those plastic double dishes are the work of the devil as most cats don't like drinking where they eat. Glad she's sorted. They are complicated little blighters.
