Our 5 month old kitten is dying

Just wanted to raise aware of this. Our pure bred kitten came from a breeder (shelters closed in lockdown). He has been diagnosed with a fatal virus called FIP. A coronavirus which lots of cats carry but vary rarely develops into this illness.

I didn’t like the conditions the cats were housed in at the breeder when we collected him.. but have no idea if they are to blame or not.
Either way we are heartbroken, is is a beautiful soul.

I'm so sorry OP, this is awful. Poor baby Flowers

"FIP is also more common in cats kept in groups or colonies (especially breeding households) as this is an environment where FCoV infections are spread easily. A crowded environment may also contribute to stress, which can be a factor in disease development as it compromises the cat’s immune response."

I'm so sorry Thanks - poor baby and your family x

Watchdog did a report on this a few years ago. Some very dodgy breeders out there not testing. I feel for you tho. My cousin bought a puppy, not knowing it was from an Irish puppy farm.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/09/2020 22:54

My two Persians were reduced from a kitten farm. One of them had very bad HCM. She's probably passed it on to the many kittens she'll have had. Very sorry about your cat OP. Sounds very much like a kitten farm.

OohKittens · 08/09/2020 17:50

Is the kitten a registered pedigree? It's so common in people selling cats which they claim to be a breed, but unless registered the cat is a moggy. Is the kitten a ragdoll? I would report to whoever the kitten is registered with. I'm so sorry I once lost a kitten to hcm it's why now I'm very particular about buying a pedigree cat from champion lines. My Norwegian forest kitten cost me £650.

Ibizafun · 08/09/2020 21:20

The kitten is a registered pedigree and we paid £600. Thank you all so very much for your kind words.
We have started him on a course of Mutian which is not yet liscenced here but they are in the process of requesting. It is the drug used for Ebola and has apparently cured a number of cats with FIP. He is extremely poorly now, just bone and water really, we will give it a few days and if no improvement we will have him put to sleep.

So sorry to hear this. poor babyThanks
Really hope he improves over the next few days🤞🏻

Ibizafun · 09/09/2020 22:37

Thank you Imissthesouth, I’m almost afraid to write this but I think we’re watching a miracle.. we tracked down a drug which is not yet liscenced in the uk so no vet will offer it, and got someone to inject it into him yesterday (I just couldn’t do it). We thought he’s so close to dying anyway what’s to lose. Within 12 hours we saw a marked change and now after 24 hours the difference is astounding. It’s a long course but with a huge success rate, just such a shame cats are dying from FIP (Feline Peritonitis) and nobody knows about this.

Fingers and whiskers are crossed for continuing improvement.

imissthesouth · 09/09/2020 23:17

I'm praying for him, when there's cures that aren't yet licensed it's so sad❤️

madcatladyforever · 10/09/2020 11:03

I'm so sorry, both my cats contracted this but got over it, it didn't develop into the final stage.
The boy cat got rid of the virus within a few days and my current 19 year old has some long term damage and diarrhoea from it and was "almost" put down from it 5 years ago but recovered.
Cats can get this anywhere its very common and apparently most cats get it and get over it, very rarely does it turn into FIP.
So sorry it's tragic that this is happening to your kitty.

madcatladyforever · 10/09/2020 11:05

P.S I don't know what this drug is, I didn't have access to it. My vet recommended I have my cat put down but I decided to give it one more week and she got better. Now she is 19 so there is hope.

GrumpyMug2 · 10/09/2020 13:27

Wishing you the best of luck

sashh · 10/09/2020 13:33

Fingers crossed here OP

shesgonebatshitagain · 10/09/2020 17:26

I know there is a new drug to the market I read about it but as you say it’s not licensed.
I hope that he pulls through FIP is a silent killer amongst cats.
Keep us posted and 🤞🏻 For you little kitten bless him

duckme · 10/09/2020 17:35

I have my fingers crossed for you all

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/09/2020 18:53

I will pray for him too, can you get him a multi vit & mineral supplement for kittens?.

You need everything to fight a virus.

pilates · 10/09/2020 18:58

How is he today Ibiza?

WingingItSince1973 · 10/09/2020 19:01

Aw as a 'mum' to 6 cats I really feel for you. I really hope he is improving today. Lots of love xxx

Ibizafun · 10/09/2020 23:32

Thank you all so SO much. We couldn’t believe our eyes this morning when we saw him tearing around the room after his sister.

Our vet had never heard of it but spent a whole evening reading up on it and decided to support us with the injections if we signed a disclaimer. He’s only on day 3 and is now eating for England.

Madcatlady I have never heard of a cat getting over FIP so that’s amazing. If you don’t mind me asking, what long term damage apart from diarrhoea does your cat have from it?

pilates · 11/09/2020 07:47

Was the treatment expensive?

Bargebill19 · 11/09/2020 09:08

Oh that’s fantastic!! Long may zooming around remain!!

Ibizafun · 11/09/2020 11:58

Thanks!! The treatment is £3500 excluding vets fees to inject the vials before he goes onto the pills but apparently Petplan pay out for this, we’re hoping anyway!
