My cat is missing. I am distraught.

I adopted two tortoiseshell sisters, four years ago, and they have been the light of my life. Just us, they are with me almost 24/7, as I am disabled and often housebound.

On Tuesday night, Mabel went missing. I always keep them in at night (scared of cars) but somehow she found a way out, despite the window netting etc. No sign of her since. Nothing.

I have printed 50 posters and put them up all round, and slips through over 100 houses. Mabel is posted on our local missing cats page, and this has been shared and reposted over 200 times. I have called the microchip company and registered her missing, and called all the local vets. One of my carers has paced the streets in the dead of night calling for her and I am calling for her day and night.

I have used cat litter in the garden to help with scent, and I have been spending as much time outside talking as I can.

Is there anything more I can do? I am frantic. She is so very timid - a shy little home bird who had to be coaxed into loving me and then did so unreservedly. She would sit silently doing long slow blinks, and would very gently tap my arm when she thought she was owed some attention.

What else could I do? She won't have gone adventuring and is very unlikely to be hiding 'in plain sight' as she is simply so timid. She is never normally out of sugar for more than an hour T a time so this is so very out of character. She is microchipped and neutered but no collar.

What else can I do? I am so desperate.

I really doubt it’s a fox , urban foxes and cats mooch about quite happily ignoring each other , don’t give up hope cats do go missing with no sightings .

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/09/2020 10:34

I find that odd too. And not very nice of them either.

Chameleon2003 · 10/09/2020 11:02

I knew of a cat that escaped following a house move so he didn't know the area.
He was gone for about 8 weeks.
We put up posters but he had wandered further than expected. About half a mile.
He was found hanging around by the takeaway food shops where he was getting scraps and going into a little shop. A customer of the shop saw him and remembered seeing the posters.
Cats do seem to seek out human company.
Good luck.

IHateCoronavirus · 10/09/2020 11:07

Hi op don’t give up hope. Our mad as a hatter girl was gone for just over two weeks (completely out of character) she came back filthy and a little skinnier but was otherwise fine. We took her to the vet and they said she was a little dehydrated and was more than likely locked in a garage or shed. They said it happened quite often.

MargeryBenson · 10/09/2020 13:23

What a weird thing for the pet detective to say. These people are probably little more than charlatans so I'd steer clear

Foxes don't tend to trouble cats btw

Tavannach · 10/09/2020 14:03

Sadly the other place to check is the cleansing department at your local council in case she was hit by a car.
A timid cat not used to outdoors is unlikely to have gone very far. It's possible someone has taken her in as a "stray" and is feeding her so keep going with the posters.
I don't buy the fox theory at all.

oxcat1 · 10/09/2020 14:38

I do hope you are all right. Although I am also haunted by the idea of how terrified Mabel will be if she is trapped and alone.

I did call the council cleansing, and no bodies swept recently. Phew.

Because of how very timid she is, and how easily she hides if spooked (I had a weekend in hospital and she stayed hidden under the bed throughout, not even eating), I very much doubt she has been taken in. I an also unsure how she will be spotted as she is so good at hiding.

Her sister keeps crying for her.

I just thought Id add my cat experience to bring you some hope. At the end of April my very scared ex feral housecat followed our other cat out of the house, a fox barked, both cats spooked, but my ex feral bolted. We saw him for a few nights afterwards when I put food, water and a humane trap out, then nothing for four and a half months. I set a humane trap with and monitored with wildlife and security cameras nightly. We saw him about a week ago and ticed him with food towards a trap and luckily caught him five nights ago.
Everyone said he would be long gone, but I'm so pleased that I didnt give up. If I hadnt put food and a camera out I wouldn't have known he was there.

Animalsearch.uk are a good organisation, never give up!

bodgeitandscarper · 10/09/2020 14:49

These traps are good:- mdc eezicatch, but we added a spring to the door and weights to the rings as we found some cats were faster than the gravity closing door. I have successfully trapped several feral cats with it.

CausingChaos2 · 10/09/2020 15:55

Whereabouts are you OP? If you’re local to me I’m happy to go and knock doors. I really think this is your best chance of finding her.

oxcat1 · 10/09/2020 22:17

Thank you so much @CausingChaos2 - a very sweet offer. I'm south coast. I can't really imagine her being spotted unless people actively look as she will go out of her way to hide. She's so timid.

CausingChaos2 · 11/09/2020 09:17

Ah - nowhere near me unfortunately. I agree that you’ll likely need someone to find her. Have a look on Facebook for local lost and found cat groups - most have people who will help you search for her. She could be very close but staying quiet due to her nature.

This link may be helpful too:

BusyEvenForBee · 13/09/2020 07:56

Please do not give up hope.

Do you have Nextdoor (it is neighbourhood app) Do post there. I was amazed how often our kind neighbors post about found cats and indeed help to find the lost ones.

I also doubt that the fox has taken her. We lots of cats and lots of foxes around. And never once I heard that the fox was responsible for lost cat.

Good luck!

Oldestchild90s · 20/09/2020 18:26

It has been a while @oxcat1 any news?!

theliverpoolone · 20/09/2020 23:22

OP, you said you moved house just before lockdown, and that your cat doesn't like change. How far did you move? Could your cat have got confused and ended up trying to get back to where you used to live? Have you tried contacting any of your old neighbours, or whoever now lives in your old home?

I really hope you find her.

RunningFromInsanity · 20/09/2020 23:52

Any news?
If it is any consolation my friends house cat went missing very shortly after they moved. It was during a really harsh winter and we really thought he was dead.
He was found 5 months later living miles away with a feral colony in a farmyard. Owner of the yard thought he was a bit too friendly so took him to a vets to be scanned for a chip. Came home fat as anything.

So it does happen. I know of many cats who have strolled in months later like nothing’s happened.

oxcat1 · 23/09/2020 10:18

She came home!!!!

9 days missing, and suddenly in the middle of the night she appeared as mysteriously as she had disappeared! Again, all doors and windows shut so absolutely no idea how she got in or out. Really very strange.

Mabel was very thin and ravenous, and all her claws had broken off or worn away. Perhaps worse, she was calling out constantly. Every time she began to fall asleep she would call out whimpering and crying, waking herself up. I wonder if she had been calling constantly and didn't know how to settle herself after? So heartbreaking.

But now she is good! Great even. And I am so very happy - as is her sister, although she was pretty pissed off with her initially!

Thank you for your concern. I am so touched that people remembered!

Very glad to hear it, poor Mabel!

Plump82 · 23/09/2020 10:41

Oh im so pleased for you and Mabel. Might be worth taking her to the vet just to ensure shes not got anything going on with the calling out and also and her broken claws.

Purplecatshopaholic · 23/09/2020 10:47

Aww so delighted for you op, was rooting for you and Mabel. Xx

Toddlerteaplease · 23/09/2020 11:23

Fantastic news. So pleased for you and Mabel!

clanger71 · 23/09/2020 13:03

Aww, that's lovely news! Being stuck here back in local lockdown, Mabel's return home has really cheered up my day.

So pleased for you!

SparklingLime · 23/09/2020 13:10

Guiltypleasures001 · 23/09/2020 13:18

I bet someone's been away and she's been locked in somewhere poor mite
Thanks

Bargebill19 · 23/09/2020 13:27

Oh fabulous news!!! Lots and lots of cuddles are prescribed. Really hope she gets over her evident fright and yet hopes she’s never going to wander again.
Brilliant news.
