Is there any way to get flea treatment online?

My vet charges me four times what they pay for my cats' flea, worm and tick treatments. Is there any other way to get these prescription medicines, for example an online vet, or do they have to actually see your cats before they can prescribe?

I've used Fetch online before.

dementedpixie · 16/08/2020 13:55

You would need to pay for a private prescription from your vet and then you could buy them online

bruffin · 16/08/2020 13:56

Ive got prescription worming treatment for cats from PetsatHome. They didnt need to see the cat, just asked a few questions

justaweeone · 16/08/2020 14:07

We use this company

https://www.medicanimal.com/

PaternosterLoft · 16/08/2020 14:17

You don't need a prescription for Fetch (part of Ocado) although they do ask a few questions. £16 for 4 vials of Advantage and £10 for 4 vials of Droncit.

dementedpixie · 16/08/2020 14:18

Advantage isn't a prescription medication. If you got something like stronghold or advocate then you need a prescription

Petsathome will issue the prescription.
dementedpixie · 16/08/2020 14:37

Is that not because some of them have vet trained staff instore?

bruffin · 16/08/2020 16:08

Yes but its cheaper than going to the vet

BadEyeBri · 16/08/2020 16:27

Just to clarify PetsAtHome cannot issue a veterinary prescription. Only vets can issue prescriptions for POM-V medicines. I know this as I am a vet that works in a PetsAtHome vet practice. There will be a charge for a written prescription from your vet just like there would be a charge from a private GP. Your animal will need to have been seen by the vet as legally the animal must be under their care.
You can buy many non prescription flea and worm treatments over the counter or on the internet. These do not require a veterinary prescription. I hope this helps.

StuntNun · 16/08/2020 17:43

Thanks everyone so it looks like I'm stuck paying the vet prices as I need the prescription versions as my cats get fleas and ticks all the time.

You could pay for the paper prescription from the vet and then buy online

PurpleThistles84 · 16/08/2020 17:48

I use frontline plus, I have it on subscription from pets at home every month. You can set it up online and it gets posted out each month. I suppose it depends what flea treatment you use. Frontline plus has always been great for my dog and cat.

The petsathome i went to isdued the prescription. They do hsve a vets on site, but i didnt need an appointment or take the cat. Just walked in and answered questions. Im sure it was a lot cheaper than normal vet fees.

This is what I do for things like Metacam and worming tablets.

I have just stocked up on Advantage from these people:

www.petprescription.co.uk

I paid £12 (delivered) for 4 pipettes.

StuntNun · 16/08/2020 19:48

Don't the vets mind Casually?

I've just started trying Itch Pet which is another subscription service but lots of people saying on Facebook that it's really effective.

Vinorosso74 · 16/08/2020 20:00

I get a prescription from our vets which costs around £13 and is for 6 months of Stronghold. I buy it from animeddirect.co.uk for about £30. The vets legally need to have seen the animal within a time frame (I don't know exactly what that is) to ensure they prescribe the correct dosage.
Our vets don't mind. The internet pharmacies can buy the products in way cheaper than vet practises do.

BadEyeBri · 16/08/2020 20:40

@bruffin they canNOT give you POM-V drugs or issue a written prescription for the same. They CAN sell non POM-V flea and worm treatment. Really. This is what I do for a living.

dementedpixie · 16/08/2020 20:50

@bruffin what product is it they give you?

PishPashPop · 16/08/2020 20:52

I get Programme Oral Suspension for my cats. You get 6 pippettes to last 6 months but I have 4 cats so buy 1 pack a month. Its brilliant, unless my cats build a resistance to it I'll never buy anything else

It tastes very strong so I have to hide it in stronger smelling cat food or for my more stubborn cat I sometimes have to hand feed it him

It's the best flea treatment I've come across & it really helped one of my cats with his fur loss. He was nearly bald at the back where as now hes back to his beautiful self Smile

PishPashPop · 16/08/2020 20:53

Ah posted too soon

It ranges from around £25 to £30 for 6 pipettes but if you only have 1 cat then it lasts 6 months.

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 16/08/2020 20:54

I’ve been to pets at home today for some
Flea spray etc and asked if they issue flea treatments that’s the same what vets would prescribe and they said yes. They just needed the pets weight.

But I’ve decided to ring vets in the morning as I want the strongest stuff.

To the Pp that mentioned itch, it didn’t work for my dog.

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 16/08/2020 20:55

Just realised I’ve posted in the cat section, not sure if flea treatments are the same for cats and dogs Blush

Veterinari · 16/08/2020 21:24

@bruffin as has already been said PAH cannot issue prescriptions. It is a legally regulated process.
Either:
Its likely that You did not buy a POM-V (tell us the name of the treatment and we'll know)

Alternatively if you are registered as a patient there, and your cat has recently been seen then the vet clinic within the PAH could dispense a POM-V

Either way your advice isn't accurate.
