Getting male kit neutered tomorrow

What should I expect? Have been told to fast him from midnight which he won't be happy about in the morning. I think I'll probably have to fast his sis too as seems unfair to give her food and not him.

Is he likely to be out of action for a few days? Still waiting on a date to get the female done but at least they won't be able to mate.

My male was fine, would know he had had anything done at all. They don’t even give males a cone as it’s such a little snip.

Female was harder but mostly because the cone caused her so much distress. We had to take it off in the end as, by that point, she hadn’t had anything to eat or drink for 24 hours. She happily ate as soon as we took it off. They gave us painkiller to give to her and we had to remove her radiator bed as she wasn’t allowed to jump but she was perfectly fine, the painkiller made her drowsy so she slept more but neither of them had any issues.

hartof · 07/06/2020 12:35

Mine was also fine back to being mental a couple of hours after being home!

Fluffycloudland77 · 07/06/2020 13:48

He’ll be bouncing around the next morning.

I cried all the way home dropping mine off.

Oldraver · 07/06/2020 14:26

Withing half an hour of getting him home he had the collar off and was racing round the house

Previous cat sulked on the settee for days

Stokey · 07/06/2020 18:48

Ah thanks everyone, good to know he'll hopefully take it in his stride. Just got to navigate the lack of food in the morning!

I am having my new cat (female) spayed next week. I am worried about her getting the cone off. In cases where this has happened - did the cat try to pull out the stitches? Since I work, she will be on her own for 9 hours per day after the day of her surgery.

Fluffycloudland77 · 07/06/2020 18:59

You can buy little body suits for them.

DontCallMeBaby · 07/06/2020 19:02

I had the honour of being the only person the vet nurse had ever had call up after having cats neutered to ask ‘is there a reason they’re paddling in their water bowls?’ I concluded in the end they’d got bored while in recovery and realised splashing water around was a fun game ... so that indicates how (not) traumatised they were by the whole experience.

TheRattleBag · 07/06/2020 19:28

My female cat hated her cone and managed to get it off every single time I got it back on her.

In the end I gave up and took a day off work to watch her to make sure she didn't attack the stitches. Turns out all she wanted to do was clean up the stitched area, which she did, and then totally ignored it and was back to normal.

minniemoll · 07/06/2020 19:37

My two boys were absolutely fine, once they got home you wouldn't know anything had happened. One did go a bit mad and charged around a lot, so I let him out even though the vets had said to keep him in.
I've had three girls spayed, no cone needed for any of them, again you'd hardly know anything had happened.

TakemetoGreeceplease · 07/06/2020 19:42

Is he likely to be out of action for a few days?

Haha. No, he'll likely be bouncing off the walls off his face on ketamine. People are always surprised how lively their kittens are after neutering, honestly they barely notice.

Fluffycloudland77 · 07/06/2020 19:44

Ketamine makes them reckless so keep them in down stairs till it wears off.

cosmo30 · 07/06/2020 20:13

Ours was fine. Expected him to fall out with me but he was as fussy as ever! Didn't seem to bother him one bit. Did have to stop him grooming down there though as advised by the vet and he came home with some painkillers

Ahwig · 07/06/2020 20:30

We had our twin boys done in January. We were told they couldn’t have normal cat food the day of the op but could give them fish or chicken. Mmm boy did they milk that.!!!! I had to go back to the local shop twice. They like others have said didn’t even crash out when they got home they chased each other around the house doing “zoomies “ as normal .

Stokey · 08/06/2020 08:30

That's funny re ketamine. They haven't been outside yet and normally tend to hang out wherever we are but will try and keep him near.

I don't have any fish or chicken, so may have to pop to the shop while he's getting done.

When I dropped him off, the vet's receptionist said I would need to change his food after neutering and move to (they recommend) Royal Canin neutered kitten food. He's still only 4 months and pretty skinny (photo in the laundry basket!). Does anyone remember? At the moment they both get a combo of Hills kitten wet & dry.

Mine have been on the Royal Canin neutered young female food forever - 2 are no longer “young” & 1 is male but they all love it Confused & they’re very healthy.

Cheapest place to buy it I’ve found is here (it’s wildly expensive from the vet). I get the 10kg bags, but with 1 cat the 3.5kg would be a better bet (plus a nice airtight clipped-lid container to keep it in)

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/06/2020 12:25

They don’t always honk up, one of ours was always a total Garfield and my Bengal lad was a big eater but very active so pure muscle.

You need to consider their urinary tract health too.

I didn’t feed neuter food, he was on kitten food till a year then pouches. They need calories to grow.

GiantKitten · 08/06/2020 12:47

My half-Bengal lad is the same (7.5kg of muscle. He drills holes in my thighs when he stands on my lap) but he loves the neutered young female biscuits. They dilute urine too.

Mine also get (& love) the basic Felix pouches. I’ve bought them fancy foreign delights in the past & they turned their noses up so the biscuits are their luxury.

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/06/2020 14:27

Is he out of surgery yet?.

Stokey · 08/06/2020 16:01

Just picked him up, thanks @Fluffycloudland77. He's wearing a cone of shame which he is awfully stressed about, poor thing. But he is full of energy and trying to eat, just rather unhappy. Female is alternating between growling at him and quivering in the corner. The vet said to make sure he keeps it on for up to 14 days, which seems like a very long time. Hoping he'll get used to it.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 08/06/2020 16:04

Awww, he looks like my SnoreCat.

GiantKitten · 08/06/2020 16:38

14 days is nuts Confused

Did the vet say why?

cosmo30 · 08/06/2020 16:40

Ours had a cone on for a cut on his neck, he was fuming at first and kept purposely walking into things to knock it off lol but he got used to it quite quickly and had it on for two weeks! They start to absolutely stink though as food gets trapped in them so just wipe it down often. Also ours was constantly licking his and the noise went straight through me 😂

paap1975 · 08/06/2020 16:41

I've been involved with lots of kittens that have had the snip (via a trap, neuter, release programme) and none ever had a cone. 14 days seems nuts. Did the vet say why?
