New cat, new name?

I’m adopting a 5 year old cat tomorrow. Yay! But I don’t like her name. Can I change it or just leave it be?

I’m no expert but we adopted 2 cats (aged 2 and 4) and successfully changed their names.

GuppytheCat · 01/06/2020 14:25

Aren't they all called something like 'Haveyoufedthecatyetbecauseshe'sundermyfeetagain?' anyway?

Toilenstripes · 01/06/2020 14:29

In the past I’ve had lots of nicknames for them, including ‘are you mad?’ and ‘stinky’.

I didn't because I thought at 5, mine would have learned their names. One was ok but didn't like the other one. I found out a couple of years later that they didn't have names until they were rescued! So I could have done after all. However they do respond to them.

Toddlerteaplease · 01/06/2020 17:46

My third cat came with the best cat name ever. Cheddar. So I kept it as it is perfect!

Windyatthebeach · 01/06/2020 17:48

My dcat goes by Shift or Shut-up mostly.
. Don't forget the pic op!!

iklboo · 01/06/2020 17:58

Ours are usually 'Jesus Christ, cat' and 'For Fucks Sake, cat'

Toilenstripes · 01/06/2020 19:08

Cheddar is a great name! 😃

Cheddar is a great cat! Quite the MN following Grin

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 01/06/2020 20:43

One of my cats has been temporarily renamed from Karl to 'Poodle-y' since Easter. He now seems to answer to it Grin.

New cat, new name?
Toilenstripes · 01/06/2020 21:53

Oh dear! Bless him, what happened to Karl?

Toilenstripes · 01/06/2020 21:54

I will definitely post a pic! I’m quite excited about her arrival!

Karl had a fight and ended up with a very expensive bank holiday lockdown abscess. Recovered quickly but his shaved tail is taking forever to grow back.
Looking forward to photos of your new arrival.

GuppytheCat · 02/06/2020 06:56

Grumpy, if the abscess was on his tail, I think he was running away rather than ‘having a fight’!

My cats have all had the Bum Bite of Shame.

inappropriateraspberry · 02/06/2020 07:38

One of our cats always seems to come of worse in fights the rabbits in the field next door, and is usually known as 'scabby cat'!

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 02/06/2020 07:52

GuppytheCat - yes, definitely a 'Run Away' abscess I'm afraid. Sad

Toilenstripes · 03/06/2020 17:25

Here she is! Named Vesper. She’s ferociously affectionate.

Vesper suits her fabulously.

Thank you! I appreciate the positive feedback. I haven’t named a cat since the late 90s when I was going through my Pride and Prejudice phase and had Lizzie and Mr Darcy!

Our cat was three when we adopted her, direct from a family who had had her since she was a kitten, but changed circumstances meant she was stressed and unhappy. We kept her name similar-ish sounding, but different, so it wasn’t too confusing. Think Lizzie to Lily, Maisie to Daisy. We just said her name a lot, and by the time we started to let her out she came to it. Friends of ours adopted a cat called Meadow, and over the course of a month changed it to Dora - they called her Medora, then eventually dropped the Me.

My DP swears cats only know voices, but ours absolutely knows her name, dinner, outside, garden, num (a treat), and NO (kitchen counters). I have trained her to sit, using “nums”, so she know sit too. She is very motivated by greed.

Vesper is a beauty, and lovely name.

Vesper suits her, lovely and strong name.
