Do you bath your cat?

That? I've never bathed mine but it seems to be something people do a lot on TikTok

Lol - no . Not necessary .

DENMAN03 · 20/05/2020 17:05

Yes but I have two Sphynx and they get very grubby and smelly! They are used to it but not over keen.

Pipandmum · 20/05/2020 17:07

Never have. I would if they rolled in something gross though.

wizzbangfizz · 20/05/2020 17:18

toddlerteaplease that is not the face of as happy cat 😸

No. Just no.
I did have to bath our previous cats paws. She snuck out and walked along the newly painted fence dyeing her white paws orange. She was a very calm cat but the amount of scrabbling and splashing was quite something. DP and DD were out and returned home to a bathroom which looked like someone tried to spray tan it.0

I bathed mine when they were about 10 months old because they had been out rolling in a fire pit somewhere and were covered in ash and smelled of burning.

I wasn’t going to let them ingest that grooming themselves so I bathed them individually in the kitchen sink.

The yowling was ridiculous. You’d think there was more than two inches of water in it and I was trying to drown them!

None of us enjoyed the experience. They were so skinny when wet!

It has not been repeated in 14 years. Although I have had to wash individual paws or a tail now and again and muddy paws get wiped before living room access is granted. Another cause for pitiful meowling.
Pathetic. 🐈

It was not a fun experience.

Allergictoironing · 20/05/2020 18:08

It's taken me 4 years to get my cats to tolerate being picked up for more than around 5 seconds, and I can't pick them up for days after they've been to the vet for their annual MoT & jabs. They may never talk to me again if I tried to BATH them.

Anyway as PPs have said, they are self cleaning - possibly the only pet that is.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 20/05/2020 18:17

I once had to bathe the back end of our boy cat - he wasn’t washing properly and smelt awful. He did NOT enjoy being bathed, and washed himself properly from then on.

The process wasn’t too traumatic - for either of us - mainly because I was only trying to bathe part of him, not all of him.

MrAlyhakinsMassiveYacht · 20/05/2020 18:25

Our boy cat goes through phases of rolling in fox wee and yes, then he gets a bath but with no water shampoo so you only have to spray it on and rub it in.

3cats · 20/05/2020 18:29

No, but now one of my cats is getting elderly, I do have to wipe his face for him with a cloth.

caringcarer · 20/05/2020 18:30

I would not be bathing a cat. Not even my Bengal and they like water. I think if you want to bath a cat you have got to do it from when they are tiny kittens so they are used to it.

The cat across road from us had a bath after getting tar on her white coat. She scratched and bit her owner and tar still did not come off.

Theonewiththecat · 20/05/2020 18:35

Once I had to bath the cat, as somehow and I don't know how he managed to poo down the outside if his leg, and it wasn't overly solid. 🤮
He wasn't too fussed, he didn't put up a fight, and then he got wrapped in a big fluffy towel and he looked like the cutest baby.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 20/05/2020 18:35

Very, very, very rarely and only when absolutely essential.

The only examples were one cat having rolled around in cement on a building site, one cat having been attacked by a dog and reeking of dog, and my old cat who in his last few weeks was very bad at keeping himself clean.

Gingerkittykat · 20/05/2020 18:53

There's a lot of paint incidents here, I also had one many years ago and cat was not happy to be bathed.

My old boy needed his bum and back legs washed several times near the end and also a general wipe down with a wet flannel. He wasn't impressed with getting soaked for a proper wash but never struggled and got loads of cuddles afterwards.

thecatneuterer · 20/05/2020 19:53

I used to have to bathe my persian as she kept getting the squits and it got stuck in her fur. She seemed to quite like it surprisingly.

But generally no, you should never bath a cat.

JessicaDay · 20/05/2020 20:21

When I was about four I thought I would help by bathing the cat’s kittens. I couldn’t reach the taps on the kitchen sink but I could reach the fridge and base cupboard so I gave them a bath in a mixing bowl of milk.

It splashed everywhere so I decided the best thing to do would be to mop the floor, again with milk.

The kittens miaowed and licked each other a lot.

Momma cat not happy. Momma not happy.

TwatCat · 20/05/2020 20:57

I had to bath my cat once because he shit himself on the way to the vets. He was completely covered in shit. Head to toe where he freaked out inside his carry box. Even the vet said he'd need to be washed.

I still have the scar on my arm where he bit me.

We don't go to the vets any more. It's not worth the stress. He's an indoor cat.

wizzbangfizz · 20/05/2020 21:02

Some of these have really made me chuckle 🤭

Mine gets bathed every 3 months. Not a sphynx, just a regular cat Confused

The first time I washed her wasn't great & it still Isn't but nobody gets hurt & she tolerates it albeit reluctantly.

A couple of years ago she started getting a tangled matted up patch of hair on her back, it looked greasy & I kept cutting it as it was knotted but it just kept growing back knotted & greasy so I decided to bath her & it's solved it. So kitty gets a proper scrub every 3 months now.

I started this bathing when she was 9, I guess she's just a good cat 💕

Satsuma2 · 20/05/2020 21:26

I have only given one a bath but he was only about five months old at the time. One of the other cats threw up on him. He also had a bath voluntarily as he jumped into the bath with me. That was fun trying to get him out.

moonbells · 20/05/2020 21:39

Once. Kitten was newly-arrived and very into everything, including as it turned out, the loo. Just as DH got up from the seat.

Kitten got a free bath for that one. I got scratched. And as a family we now always put the loo lid down...

Flymetothetoon · 20/05/2020 21:41

No I have 4 cats and the last time I checked they all wash themselves.
Plus the largest is the size of a lion cub with claws to match (Maine Coon) no way would I try boss him into a bathtub 😺

BeardedMum · 20/05/2020 21:44

No my God they would drown me if I tried 😂

PestymcPestFace · 20/05/2020 21:47

DSD bathed her DMs cat, three days in hospital later she lived to tell the tale. Cat bites can be very nasty.

Potentialmadcatlady · 20/05/2020 21:51

Yes quite regularly.. probably twice/three times a month.. he is disabled so needs some help..
my other cats love water. Two of them will join me in the bath or shower if I let them and they have a paddling pool in the back garden to play in.
