Anyone recommend a grooming brush for a medium coated cat that isn't keen on grooming?

Dcat is getting older and not doing such a good job, she's also a little bit rotund.

I've just had to remove a couple of matted bits at the bottom end of her back and want to get her into a better grooming routine but she isn't that co-operative sometimes.

She has a medium coat I would say, not flat but not long either. I currently have one of the those wire type brushes.

I've had reasonable results with one of DD's old Tangle Teaser brushes. It doesn't get rid of the mats but it does a good job on cat hair for daily brushing.

I snip old mats out with a pair of embroidery scissors or a de-matting tool using treats as a reward.

WaxOnFeckOff · 05/04/2020 22:38

Thanks both, the mats are snipped out - used a pair of curved nail scissors with the curve upwards so as to make sure I didn't snip her, she was actually not to bad, she was curled up on my knee so relaxed and sleepy.

I'd just like something to stop anything coming back. I think we have a tendency to stroke her and perhaps stroke the loose hair to the back without actually following through and taking it off the back so it accumulates - if that makes sense.

The options seem to be, what we have now which is wire type thing, a silicone type brush, those gloves things or a rare offering of a more traditional brush.

She isn't keen on the wire type brush at all.

Hi,
I used to work In a vets and one of the best products I used was called a Furminator. They're pricey, but worth it.

WaxOnFeckOff · 05/04/2020 22:50

There seem to be a few things under the Furminator brand @Elmo311.

Was it a de-shedding tool of some kind (there are a few) a brush or a curry comb thing?

Thank you btw :)

Furminators are really harsh though. Don't they cut the undercoat out?

The gloves with rubber nodules are gentle and get loads out, they might be a good place to start.

thethoughtfox · 05/04/2020 22:56

My long haired cats love the Tangle Teaser. It is like a nice massage. I go in with that first and it does detangle, then they let me get in with a comb for the difficult knots.

Perfidy · 05/04/2020 22:58

Zoom from kong our mature longish haired cat loves it

CoffeeandPainting · 05/04/2020 23:00

The gloves are good.
The cat feels like they are getting a stroke

Thanks, consensus seems to be some kind or silicon/plastic nodule type (tangle teaser/kong/mitt). i don't want a de-shedder I don't think. The mats are gone, i just need something for general grooming that she'll tolerate and hope that discourages mats forming in the first place.

i'm sure we had a mitt in her stocking from Santapaws one year, I can't recall her being particularly keen but I wonder if we still have it somewhere. Might be worth a look.

We have a Tangle Teaser too. It seems less like a brush or comb and more like a flat hand stroking the cat, and is brilliant at this time of year for gathering up the loose floof before it gets deposited on every item of clothing and soft furnishings we have.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 05/04/2020 23:06

You could try the Licki Brush?

Seriously though, I use a Tangle Teaser on my floofy lad and he seems to enjoy it.

is it a special tangle teaser for cats or just a human one?

WaxOnFeckOff · 05/04/2020 23:12

Licki brush is mad - she doesn't get that close, sitting on your lap is a relatively new thing. She loves DS2 and will sook into him the most especially when he is home from Uni :)

Awww!

Dutypaid · 06/04/2020 00:28

If you're cutting out mats, try using a blunted curved scissors. The vets use them and they are much safer. They're available on Amazon.

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/04/2020 00:30

Cheers duty, mats all taken care off, hopefully we can get her used to grooming and won't have a recurrence.

Oh snap! I've got one of them too! This is my lad. D'you get to fuss that lovely furry tum? I do 😁.

I use a bog standard Tangle Teaser, from Boots I think. You can get them from Amazon too, which might be the better option at the moment.

Kids tangle teaser, slicker brush or zoom groom.

Toddlerteaplease · 06/04/2020 09:38

My cats love the zoom groom and my long haired Persian likes the tangle teaser.
