Stray cat

Need some advice on a stray cat we sometimes feed. He came to our door the other day with his eye closed a little, probably down to being in a fight. We noticed today that it has got worse, and is almost closed and very weepy. I tried putting on some gloves and protection (sometimes he attacks me and it's a little scary) to see if i could bathe it but he wouldn't let me anywhere near it.

I know the vets are only taking on emergency cases but does anyone have any advice on what i should do or anything i can do to help him? I don't want to leave him like this Sad

Can you get him inside?

Oldestchild90s · 05/04/2020 20:38

I've got 4 cats and my boy really doesn't like him. When i go out to this cat his scent is left on my clothes and then my cat can smell him and all hell breaks loose! I can get him inside though.

If you can get him inside you might be able to bathe it in saltwater but you might need to restrain him by holding him by his scruff.

It depends how confident you are with feisty cats. Is he neutered?.

Oldestchild90s · 05/04/2020 20:56

Not very confident i have to admit. Pregnant and anxious as it is Blush he is definitely an entire male! Maybe we'll have to bite the bullet and one of us holds him whilst the other bathes it and see how we go?!

That would be considered an emergency (well, by our clinic at least). I agree with Fluffy.

JKScot4 · 05/04/2020 20:58

Call your local Cats Protection for advice.

slipperywhensparticus · 05/04/2020 20:58

Can you ring the emergency vet and ask advice

smartiecake · 05/04/2020 21:01

Can one of you pick him up wrapped in a towel and keep all of his legs inside the towel?
I would call some cat charities and see if anyone is still taking in strays?

Fluffycloudland77 · 05/04/2020 21:02

Ok, if your not confident keep putting food out, gain trust and contact a rescue.

Fluffycloudland77 · 05/04/2020 21:30

It’s lovely you care about him.

Oldestchild90s · 05/04/2020 21:37

Thanks all for your input, i'll see what i can do!

@Fluffycloudland77 Thank you, he's gorgeous! We look after two strays in our neighbourhood, both really scruffy and could do with some proper TLC. I'll do what i can to make sure they are looked after!

So his eye was looking a lot worse today. My other half wrapped him up and i bathed his poorly eye, but it must be causing him discomfort as he kept trying to dodge me but it did look a little better after.

I spoke to the vet after and she said we need to take him in tomorrow to check his eye isn't really infected or ulcerated. If so, she wants us to put the drops in his eyes for a bit but i'm not sure if we'll be able to do that 😫 i'll wait to see if his eye is any better tomorrow then we'll see🤞🏻

Your doing really well with him. Did you give him food?.

Oldestchild90s · 06/04/2020 20:52

Yeah he left with a full tummy so he was happy overall 😻

Fluffycloudland77 · 06/04/2020 21:01

Every cloud eh?. Poor little thing.

JKScot4 · 10/04/2020 13:49

Any update?

Oldestchild90s · 10/04/2020 16:08

Thanks for asking.

All seems better, we had been burrito-ing him up and bathing his eye daily. It looks like it was caused from a scratch right above his eye but it's getting better every day 😻👍🏻

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/04/2020 17:20

You’re doing brilliantly, getting a tom cat into a burrito can’t be easy. The testosterone gives them that little bit extra feistiness.

JKScot4 · 10/04/2020 17:49

That’s grand to hear 😸
Wrestling him into a burrito must count as your daily exercise!!
Maybe once things are more relaxed you could get Cats Protection to neuter him perhaps find him a home?

Oldestchild90s · 10/04/2020 18:33

He was actually very good at getting wrapped up considering the circumstances. But i will definitely wait until this has all blown over and get him sorted! He deserves some proper love and attention and although he gets food and strokes from us, it's just not enough! An exciting little project for me 😻

Has your wee friend been back?

Oldestchild90s · 25/04/2020 16:19

He's back every day for breakfast and dinner, and we've made him a cat house (even though he's staying on top of it rather than in it) his eyes are looking perfect now and he's started purring when we stroke him 😻

Thanks for asking!

OP posts:
Fluffycloudland77 · 25/04/2020 17:40

He’s starting to trust you more isn’t he? Coming back despite eye drops.

There’s a cat near us with a sort of rabbit hutch by the front door. Cat sits on top of it or on the drive but you never see him go inside.

JKScot4 · 25/04/2020 18:53

That’s good to hear, this happened with my friend and he now lives in her house 😸
