Rehomed a kitten - is she Houdini?

We re-homed a kitten yesterday, she's 6 months old. Fairly timid but happy to have strokes and cuddles. We've been keeping her shut in the living room until she's settled, as we have another cat to introduce her to.

This morning we cannot find her. Anywhere. Nowhere in the living room. And it's impossible to get out. Please tell me this is normal, and where else should I look?!

In the sofa?

SimonJT · 16/02/2020 08:38

Do you have a fire place in the living room?

Look everywhere again, including the top of the curtains etc, kittens are good at hiding.

If she isn’t in there someone has accidentally let her out of the living room and keeping their mouths shut.

SinkGirl · 16/02/2020 08:40

Same happened to us. She was in a far corner under the bed and because she’s black we couldn’t see her. Try not to panic, she’ll be there somewhere

whatnow40 · 16/02/2020 08:42

No fireplace and defo no one has let her out. I checked on her last at bedtime and I was first up. Currently looking at the very tall Billy bookcase. There's a gap behind it of about 3 inches. Is that big enough to get behind? She's not making any sound and now DH thinks she's dead!! Shock

We lost our two at 5 months. Turns out I had shut them in a drawer - they just have climbed in when I was putting away the washing. Luckily they weren't in there longer than an hour. Open every cupboard and drawer would be my advice!

SinkGirl · 16/02/2020 08:43

And our other (giant 10 yo) cat managed to get into our chimney which has a flap on it. She managed to push the flap up to get in then couldn’t get out. Heard her miaowing in the night and thought a kitten had fallen down. Couldn’t believe it when it was her!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 16/02/2020 08:44

She will be there. Flat under something?

whatnow40 · 16/02/2020 08:46

Found her! On the bottom shelf of the bookcase hiding behind trivial pursuit! Thanks everyone!

When I first got my (adult) very timid rescues, they managed to worm their way INSIDE the sofa (as suggested by tabletray above). Didn't dare use the recliner for months unless I could see them both in case they got trapped in the mechanism!

Even now, at 4.5kg and 6kg respectively, they manage to vanish somewhere in the house occasionally.

emilybrontee · 16/02/2020 09:13

We adopted our second cat and on the first day I was in hysterics, pulled the whole house apart was running round the fields near my house...

He was on top of my kitchen cupboards.

dingit · 16/02/2020 09:14

I'm sorry but we need photos and a name?

whatnow40 · 16/02/2020 09:39

Apologies, this is Jess. We kept her original name. She's 2kg at the moment and still easily spooked. She's already very much loved!

Awww she is adorable

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 16/02/2020 10:21

So she's been hiding and she's now collecting Nerf gun pellets. Worried? Grin.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 16/02/2020 10:43

Look at those ears!

crimsonlake · 16/02/2020 11:07

She is beautiful.
Mine hides inside the sofa when she gets scared, she found a little hole underneath and now it is her safe place.

whatnow40 · 16/02/2020 11:15

Yes I think she's collecting nerf gun bullets ready to defend her base and prime looking-out-the-window spot. Our other cat loves to sit there too. He's smelt her now but not seen her yet. We're doing introductions on Tuesday I think.

We got a new kitten last year and lost her on the first night too!

She turned up eventually right underneath the kitchen cupboards - we had looked there but she had gone right round the corner.

It was a horrendous day looking for her - it was one of our other cats who eventually found her.

I'm so glad you found your kitten OP she is really cute 😻

Ellmau · 16/02/2020 12:00

I hope OldCat likes her and gives her some confidence!

dingit · 16/02/2020 12:12

😻

If I had £1 for every time I've had 'the panic' when I couldn't find 1 of mine, I'd be rich! Mine are house cats and I don't know how they do it, but they just disappear! I'll be searching high and low, convinced they must have snuck out through the 5mm gap in the front door when it was opened. Then they just come sauntering out of whatever hidey-hole they were in (shoe boxes/back of wardrobes/toy boxes) without a care in the world. Buggers!

HuggedTheRedwoods · 16/02/2020 12:23

She's lovely! Maybe you could place a box or carrier with a cover over it in a corner so she has a little space to hide in if she feels overwhelmed while settling in? That way you know where to look if she vanishes and she still has her safe hideaway.

whyisitsocold · 16/02/2020 12:28

Lost one of mine on the first day too. There was an inch high arch at the bottom of the unit which I didn't know existed. I could hear rustling n out he popped- 6kg cat! Have no idea how he fitted thru the gap.

Now both of them vanish and I can't find out where. They just magically appear from somewhere. Don't bother calling their names cos they never answer

dingit · 16/02/2020 13:08

Mines 13 and disappears. I have a panic and she's usually asleep somewhere. To be fair we lost her sister at 9 months, never found her ☹️
Oddly though, she can appear in seconds when a roast chicken comes out of the oven 😊

whatnow40 · 16/02/2020 17:17

We have the pet carrier and a box bed in each corner for her, she does like the corners of the room it seems. I opened some tuna to tempt her out, it works for our older cat!! Alas, she was stubborn. Only came out when we looked her in the eye!!
