Kitten keeps throwing up

Does anyone else have a kitten or cat which throws up a couple of times a week?
Socks is about nine months now and a few times over the last two or three weeks Ive heard her retching in the night and then found a lovely pile of what looks like partly digested cat food or dry biscuits.
She’s quite a slow eater so I don’t think it’s gobbling her food too fast. I wouldn’t say she’s overeating either. She is putting on a bit of weight, which she needed to as she was quite thin, but she’s still quite skinny.
Thing is she doesn’t really like kitten food so tends to eat food for adult cats which maybe she finds hard to digest? Also she doesn’t go out yet so doesn’t get the chance to nibble grass.
When she was neutered the vet thought she had a slight hernia so I’m wondering if this might be a factor.

Dunno about the hernia, but both of mine throw up on a regular basis - I think I average about 3 piles a week between the 2 of them.

Did you know you can get indoor cat grass? Mine have a little pot of it growing near their food bowls, and have frequent nibbles Smile

dementedpixie · 14/02/2020 14:58

What sort of food is it? Is it grain free as cats can sometimes be sensitive to wheat/grains. Adult food is ok if she has been spayed

Papergirl1968 · 14/02/2020 15:07

It’s Whiskers, Felix, Sheba, supermarket own brand etc, supplemented by bits of cooked meat, tinned salmon, steak, chicken, etc, and usually a handful of dry last thing at night. As she’s usually sick at night, I wonder if the dry is the problem.

What dry is it? Our elderly tabby throws up often, but he is a bit of a gobbler. Maybe soak the dry with a tiny bit of water; it might help?

YesItsMeIDontCare · 14/02/2020 15:12

Leroy does this sometimes and I've been assured by my vet that it's nothing to worry about unless there's blood in it, or it becomes more frequent, or watery... basically any change from what is his "normal" (as if Leroy would ever be normal 🤦🏼‍♀️). Quite often he'll do this, then present us with a hairball a few days later 🤢.

Veterinari · 14/02/2020 15:18

The hernia wouldn't cause this
Has she been dewormed?
Is she long haired
Is she stress/anxious?

Papergirl1968 · 14/02/2020 15:24

Yep, been wormed, she’s short haired and she is nervous, eg she will hide upstairs if visitors come, but she’s fine when it’s just the family and boy cat.
The dry biscuits are Purina, Go Cat, M&S own brand etc. I’ll try soaking it and seeing if that helps.

Some of that dry is really poor quality especially Go Cat. I think it even has cereals as the first ingredient. Ideally you want high meat and no cereal

Papergirl1968 · 14/02/2020 18:42

I won’t buy any more. It was on offer and I’m broke at the moment Sad

Has she been to the vet for a check?

My cat has only ever thrown up twice that I know off - she is nearly two.

Both times it was dry food (applaws, so good quality). I have reduced the dry and she mainly eats good quality wet.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 14/02/2020 19:30

Ideally you want high meat and no cereal

Ideally yes, but the reality is that they are not always affordable. Or you have a complete muppet like Leroy who absolutely will not allow any meat other than Felix As Good As It Looks Doubly Delicious in to his stomach.

If the vet is happy with what you are feeding your pet you have nothing to worry about.

dementedpixie · 14/02/2020 19:37

Ok, I'll rephrase. Ideally meat should be the first ingredient rather than cereals. Cats are carnivores and dont easily digest cereals

Papergirl1968 · 14/02/2020 21:09

See that’s the thing, my cats are like me, they like crap food! When I have tried them on posh nosh, they pester for the feline equivalent of a Maccies Blush

Tins of butchers choice are cereal free & very cheap. If they like it you can set a price alert on mysupermarket & it emails you when things are on offer.

Fluffycloudland77 · 14/02/2020 21:44

I tried Asbo on amionda Carnie once, £20 on 6 large tins. He wouldn’t even try it.

It looked just like gourmet did in the 80’s.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/02/2020 22:39

Cheddar was sick on an almost daily basis when I first got her. I had no idea such a small cat could produce such huge amounts! Since swapping her to Iams dry food and cutting right down on dreemies, she now goes 4-6 weeks between pukes then will do it 3-4 in 24 hours then it stops again.

Papergirl1968 · 14/02/2020 22:40

I thought Butchers Choice only did dog food! I shall look out for their cat food.
Gourmet is another one that goes down well, and those Webbox heart shaped ones.

Papergirl1968 · 14/02/2020 22:41

They like IAMS too.
I chop and change to give them a variety but that makes it hard to pinpoint if one is upsetting them.

OP posts:
Toddlerteaplease · 14/02/2020 22:42

I think Cheddars issue is wheat/ maize. I can't remember which. Iams is literally the only thing that she can tolerate.

Gingerkittykat · 15/02/2020 02:08

It might be the chopping and changing that is doing it since you are meant to change over gradually.

I also agree Go Cat is awful, mine developed urine infections on it which the vet said was very common. They did well on Whiskas biscuits though which are around the same price. Harringtons is good with a high meat content and affordable but only available in limited places.

fantasmasgoria1 · 15/02/2020 02:29

One of my old cats would pike on a daily basis for a week or so then would be OK for a couple of weeks and start puking again. He was a beefy boy and loved his food. Some of it was hairballs I think but cats do vomit randomly.

Papergirl1968 · 15/02/2020 12:41

They like Harrington’s and it’s sold in our local Morrison’s.
Thanks, everyone, for the advice and reassurance.

Silvercatowner · 15/02/2020 22:22

We had a cat who vomited very regularly - daily, if not more. He was absolutely fine before and after. It was rather gross.

Papergirl1968 · 15/02/2020 23:12

I feel your pain!
Almost our entire house has laminate floor, apart from the stairs, landing and my bedroom which are carpeted.
So where does she usually choose to be sick? Yep, on the carpet. She did do it in the hall the other day but on the doormat.
And once my handbag was the lucky recipient Envy (not envy!)

OP posts:
Mia184 · 16/02/2020 05:50

My cat vomited a couple of times per week and blood tests showed that she has pancreatitis, i’d get your cat checked,
