What is wrong with DCat1's chair?

2 DCats, each has their own chair in the kitchen (an arrangement they came to in early kittenhood, which incidentally we had no say in!)

We had a problem through the summer with DCat2's chair - she would not sit on it, no idea why. This was ultimately solved by moving the chair from one end of the kitchen table to the other, after which said chair became acceptable once again to DCat2.

Now DCat1 has a problem with his chair. Nothing has been done to it, but he refuses to sit on it. The chair is verboten. He won’t even use it after I’ve moved it from one end of the table to the other, as per DCat2.

I’ve suggested to DH (a priest) that he exorcises it, but apparently he’s not licensed for deliverance ministry, so that’s out. Meanwhile DCat1 is reduced to sitting forlornly on a padded envelope while his chair stands unused.

Anyone know what is wrong with DCat1's chair? I would rather like him to start using it again, life is much tidier when the DCats are on their chairs rather than strewn on the floor! Grin

Our three cats each have their own place that they prefer to sit.

Since Christmas, they've rotated - literally all swapped to the next one. I've never seen that in forty years of owning cats.

Chocmallows · 15/01/2020 00:01

He's loving the envelope, I have found cats often like to feel solid smooth surfaces under their paws rather than rough (e.g. thick rugs) or soft e.g. skin.

When he's messed with your head enough, he'll pick the other chair to cause a new fuss and then other cat will need the envelope.

Chocmallows · 15/01/2020 00:04

Also, they have mixed personality issues. Mine acted as though windows were invisable for 4 years and for the last few months has been a curtain twitcher.

pleasenomorechocolates · 15/01/2020 00:04

DCat does the rotation thing too. He will be obsessed with a particular spot for weeks and then forget all about it until a few months later when the obsession starts again... He is very spoilt and likes to have a newspaper on the arm of the sofa at all times for him to sit on top of. He likes it even more when it’s today’s newspaper which I really want to read...

Downunderduchess · 15/01/2020 00:07

No solution, but wanted to say he is adorable.

Chocmallows · 15/01/2020 08:07

Try sitting on the chair regularly as though it's no longer Dcats chair, he may then decide to grab it back.

Jayneisagirlsname · 15/01/2020 08:25

Awww, his little forlorn face! I think the only solution is to move house and buy completely new furniture. It's the least you could do as responsible cat owners

nettie434 · 15/01/2020 08:30

Do you have a favourite soft jumper, the more expensive the better? Just put it on DCat1’s chair if the black tee shirt/clean washing solutions don’t work. That poor forlorn expression as he sits on the envelope Sad. Reminds me of TC when he looks longingly through the door into grumpyoldpersoneithcats’s house.

Excellent advice re the positioning of laundry, clerical shirts or otherwise, on the abandoned chair. This may be just the solution we need!

Sadly the chair is not fit for human habitation, due to having a broken ankle (both DCats have broken chairs, though they are very naice Victorian chairs of irreproachable pedigree) so the reclamation is not hugely advantageous.

I will try laundry, and if that doesn’t work I suppose we shall just have to buy a load of chairs and let him choose a new one…

Part of me wonders if Kitchen Chair has been demoted due to Utility Chair (an old camping chair of no great merit) has been upgraded with the addition of a canopy which funnels heat over from the utility radiator. Kitchen Chair has no such amenity.

Photos added of DCat1 sitting under his canopy, not unlike an Assyrian king…and in happier days when his kitchen chair was still acceptable.

Also gratuitous photos of blameless DCat2, who tidies herself off the floor beautifully.

They are both gorgeous!

TwoHeadedYellowBelliedHoleDig · 15/01/2020 18:07

My cat was very fond of his bed, that I made him, and it was under the breaskfast bar, where he could see his food bowl and anyone that approached it. Then it went out of favour for a good 2-3 months but I've just moved it into prime bird watching position and all is good again.

dementedpixie · 15/01/2020 19:15

This one of mine this evening in my basket of clean washing! It's the kids stuff so I'm not so bothered Grin

You should be ashamed op. If the chair isn't even fit for human habitation how can it possibly be suitable for a cat?

Such adorable cats and all you can offer is substandard facilities. Find an extortionately expensive antique furniture restorer immediately!

Trying93 · 15/01/2020 22:11

Hilarious!! This is one of the best things I've read on here 😂😂

I think the problem is the camping chair is more appealing with the heat from the radiator. Can you get rid of it and see if the cat goes back to the original one

WatcherintheRye · 15/01/2020 22:26

Your cats are gorgeous, op! In the spirit of what could become a 'photos of cats on furniture' thread, I give you....

AFireInJuly · 15/01/2020 22:33

Ha. Look at him being furious on his envelope.

Tell your husband he should just bless the chair - that’s a simple exorcism, no licence required.

SingingSands · 15/01/2020 22:35

Hmmm.. DCat here has also abandoned her favourite chair, how strange. She has taken to the ironing board instead. This is very inconvenient.

ithinkmycatistryingtokillme · 15/01/2020 23:18

I recently upset dcat when I reorganised the kitchen and moved the chair he s at on to look out the door. We couldn't work out why he was pacing back and forth between the kitchen and sitting room tail flicking away. When I realised what the problem was and moved the offending chair back peace was restoredGrin

Chocmallows · 15/01/2020 23:21

Cats are great. They like a routine, until they choose a new one. They rule over us!

Turquiose · 15/01/2020 23:25

Is he 'pressing the envelope' OP? I'll get my coat....

Chocmallows · 15/01/2020 23:26

Mine is spoilt and allowed to sleep on the bottom of our beds, she decides which one is favourite for the week.

Now not to alarm all the cat-mommies put there...

‘Feral Cats Break Into Body Farm to Eat Decomposing Human Corpses’ (won’t link because it’s gross a - but news story is from Colorado).

I’ve always said that your loving cat will eat you if you dropped dead given half the chance...

Jayneisagirlsname · 16/01/2020 20:12

WatcherintheRye oh please start a Cats on Furniture thread!

stitchwitch85 · 16/01/2020 21:15

I support the conversion of this thread into a Cats On Furniture thread. Or indeed Cats Under Furniture thread.

Photos please!

Below are DCat1 doing his second-favourite hobby*, which is trying to get under DH's small chest of drawers in our bedroom. DCat1 is far too fat for this nowadays but that doesn’t stop him. Also a gratuitous photo of him on his envelope, plus DCat2 looking savage on the bed.

*his favourite hobby is breaking into the bathroom and snuggling the bath mat to death.
