What breed could my cat be?

This is just a bit of fun because I know no one can really tell.

My cat Krikkit came from Cats Protection early last year who had him down as a domestic medium hair (aka moggy). However at just over 2yo he appears to still be growing (4.7 kg now and not overweight as far as I can tell). He has also put on an excellent winter coat in the last few weeks.

This has led me, DP and the cat sitter to speculate that he might have a bit of something else in him (possibly norwegian forest cat).

What do you all think?

No idea but he's gorgeous!

Soubriquet · 12/01/2020 11:35

Actually I agree with the Norwegian forest cat!

He’s adoreable though.

madcatladyforever · 12/01/2020 11:37

Arghhh so adorable. I had a big, big fluffy boi with the same shape cute face and I knew his parents, his mum was a British long hair and he looked exactly like her. So the face looks very BLH but the ears Norwegian forest cat.
Could be an interesting mix there.
My boy had teeny ears and your cat does not.

Soubriquet · 12/01/2020 11:39

Mine is a Maine coon cross British short hair (so still a moggy) Grin

Looks so much like my cat! I think he's a Norwegian

The reincarnation of my late cat, judging by the photos (I'm actually quite freaked out Blush), She was a domestic long hair, according to the vet, but visitors used to ask if she was a Maine Coon (she definitely wasn't - not big/long enough).

Gorgeous boy!

TheGonnagle · 12/01/2020 11:40

Look at that majestic tail!
No idea what he is but he’s beautiful.

Want2beme · 12/01/2020 11:42

He's from a very beautiful breedGrin . One of my cat's is big and fluffy, also described as longhaired domestic. I'd love to know how they occur.

DaveDave · 12/01/2020 11:43

He looks exactly like our old cat, who was Norwegian Forest. I really want another one, they are the sweetest cats!

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/01/2020 11:52

That’s an epic tail he has there.

PigletJohn · 12/01/2020 12:02

fur doesn't look to me to be long enough for a Norwegian.

I can't see the size from the photos but he doesn't look huge either.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 12/01/2020 12:03

I had a NFC, he was gorgeous. Massive though, much bigger than your lovely cat, and he had longer fur. Maybe a cross?

NannyPear · 12/01/2020 12:07

Before I even read your post I looked at the photos and saw Norwegian Forest. He's beautiful.

Lonecatwithkitten · 12/01/2020 12:08

Siberian mine weighs 4 Kgs, but is female. The norweigh forest descend from Siberian's which are one of the oldest breeds.

Very similar story here! Was classed as domestic medium hair when I adopted her age 1 and by the following winter had an unbelievable ruff, tail, undercoat etc. Vet immediately said Norwegian forest was in there somewhere - her tail is very similar to your boy’s!

frazzledasarock · 12/01/2020 12:13

Our Maine coon cross looks like that except he’s several shades of black.

DP told me he was a british short hair when I first met him! The vet was like Confused that’s not a shorthair Grin

PigletJohn · 12/01/2020 12:19

can he do this?

Diplobrat · 12/01/2020 12:26

@PigletJohn !!!Grin I'll need to try that!

He hasn't seen snow yet (was an indoor cat in a high rise before he came to me) but I'm very interested in how he would react to it.

All of your kitty pictures are beautiful - and I love the description from @madcatladyforever of big fluffy boi.

I agree that he isn't big enough (yet!) To be a pure breed but it's so interesting to hear all of your thoughts :)

@Hefzi - sorry to freak you out! He would however love to know he has a doppelganger XX

Awww! He reminds me of my kitty. We got him from CPL too and his details said part Maine Coon. He's a big boy. Smile

looking at @Lonecatwithkitten pic, and my friend's NWCs, it strikes me that the whiskers are ridiculously long.

People say that whiskers are to show if the cat's body will fit through a gap, but these huge cats are mostly made of fur, the body inside is nowhere near as big.

Myshitisreal · 12/01/2020 13:09

Oh my days, my cat looks almost identical, I'll post a pic 🤯

Myshitisreal · 12/01/2020 13:16

Hmmmmmm im erroring out for some reason

NorskSkogkatt · 12/01/2020 13:39

He is gorgeous! (As are all the other cats here!)

I have a Norwegian Forest Cat (we didn't know she was one when we rescued her, she was a kitten stray and she didn't go all floofy until later Grin) the first picture is when she was little and not as flumpy as she is now. She has the most beautiful tilted eyes, a gigantic amount of floof and the loveliest personality but is quite possibly the most stupid cat I have ever met Grin everything either confuses, or startles her.

Every day she looks at the house, and us, like she has never seen it/us before and doesn't know where she is, she falls off things all the time, even from a lying down position and misjudges jumps all the time. We actually took her to the vet to get her eyes/balance checked and the vet's diagnosis was "she's just not the sharpest tool in the box, is she?" Grin

Interested to know if other Forest cats are like that, or mine is just a one off Wink

Ah, bless you, OP - it's a lovely thought that there's a handsome boy looking like her fluffing about! She had enormously long whiskers too, as pp have said. It's not at all impossible that there's forest cat genes in British moggies, though: and it's interesting all these beauties on this thread have brown ears and brown brushes. My cat's tail was phenomenal - it got into everywhere Grin And caused a lot of destruction!

Don't forest cats have some thing weird about their toes? (It's entirely possible I've completely made that up, mind!)

The only sentence I know in Norwegian (if I've still remembered it right...) is "skaukatten fanget laksen"- forest cats eat salmon.

In the Middle East, there's been a lot of overlap between indigenous small wildcats and domestic breeds: you can tell wild cat ancestry through the cat having both stripes and spots, so I wonder if in this case, it's brown ears and tail?
