New kitten - too soon?

Hi,

This is my first post on here but I'm just wanting to gather thoughts.

I had to have my 17 year old cat Bella pts last fri due to a very sudden possible stroke /neurological issue. She was the last of my 3 cats & had been an only cat for her final 2 years which she loved. She came to me at 4.5 mths, rehomed through a local charity who rehome feral kittens.

Up until yesterday I was adamant that I would not consider a pair of kittens until after Christmas & then approach the charity I adopted her from to pursue adoption.

However, yesterday I have been asked if I would like to rehome an 11 wk old kitten. A friends daughter has moved back home & is not taking care of her kitten (brought with her when she moved back home)leaving the care to her mum. Mum already has several cats & 2 dogs & has asked if I would like to have the kitten.

The kitten is the same colour as Bella & has flea & worm treatments already. I will be at home until the new year as I lost my job late November. I hope to be back in work January. The plan I now have is to adopt a kitten companion from the rescue organisation.

Am I completely barmy? Logic tells me to wait but in reality I live by myself & miss having the company & something to look after. I would only need to buy kitten food.

Any constructive feedback would be appreciated.Smile

We lost our fluff ball earlier this year, I was devastated.

Fate found us a new feline.
When we went to meet her we had the carrier in the car ‘just in case’ Wink

She has helped heal my heart and we have rescued her from an unsuitable home. It was meant to be!

We lasted almost a fortnight between cats! However, the first few months were hard because oldcat we had known inside out and newcat was semi-feral, lonely and worried to start with but a year later we wouldn't be without her now and she is completely lovely. Go for it, You have a cat shaped gap and there is a cat that needs a home. Basic logic.

Keenly awaiting an update ..

nettie434 · 20/12/2019 07:36

Condolences on the loss of Bella. It feels a bit as if this was meant to happen. I think you are right to delay your final decision until you meet the kitten but to bring your cat carrier in the boot.

Well.....viewed last night & Milly has now installed herself in her new home! Loves bring with me, follows me all over, very confident & a healthy appetite for play & food. However, forgotten how putrid kitten farts are!Grin

Yay!!! She's gorgeous 😍. So happy you took her in. It was definitely meant to be. When my longest lasting cat (17y) died, I thought I should wait, for no good reason really. Moped about for 5 months then my DM found me two litter brothers via a rescue. I don't know why I waited so long. If I were in that position again, I wouldn't. There's nothing than fills your heart up more than a kitten!

slipperywhensparticus · 20/12/2019 09:16

On one hand you have a kitten in need of a good home in the other you have a good home I say put your hands together

Corneysjazzband · 20/12/2019 09:22

YABVU. You need 2 kittens to keep her company! You cannot possibly have Milly and Molly without Mandy. There should be rules.about that sort of thing. You possibly also need a Little Friend Susan.... OK I may be overthinking that.
She is lovely. New cats never replace a loved and lost cat. They make their own places.

thesunwillout · 20/12/2019 09:48

So happy for you both. She looks like one I lost few yes back, who was very young, called Pudding.
Hope she fills your heart xx

Emelene · 20/12/2019 09:52

She is gorgeous! I hope you enjoy Christmas with her. Xmas Grin

HuggedTheRedwoods · 20/12/2019 12:33

oh she's lovely - Merry Christmas Milly in your safe new home with your new kind mum!

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 20/12/2019 12:38

Sounds like it was meant to be! I lost my 19 year old girl in April this year, found a new cat in may but couldn't take her till june as she was nursing kittens. She's been the best thing for us, healed the wounds of my old girl and she so desperately needed a home. She'd been advertised over and over (cats protection) and no one offered her a home until we came along, it's like the stars aligned and she was meant to be ours. Sounds like the same thing has happened to you!

purdypuma · 20/12/2019 19:07

Well shes had her first period of time alone in the house whilst I did the crimbo food shop today, house not wrecked thank heavens. Think shes acquainted herself with her bed upstairs. Little bit of regurgitated food on the landing so best get her worked as soon as possible again. In other news shes been invited to accompany me to the parents for Christmas day lol Xmas SmileXmas Grin

It was fate. There’s no rule you have to wait a certain amount of time after a pet has passed. I had a few months notice that my old dog was going to die. Call me heartless but I had half an eye out on the rescue pages before we even had him pts. I knew I couldn’t be without a dog and rescued the next one 3 weeks after he’d passed

MashedSpud · 20/12/2019 19:23

Both are beautiful cats, quite different looking too even though the same colouring.

If you feel ready then go for it.

purdypuma · 22/12/2019 00:56

Busy day today but I thought I would update with some pics of the new ruler of this roost. Glad I have made the decision to give her a home & in other news I have been offered a new job starting 09 Jan so brighter times ahead! Xmas SmileXmas Smile

Milly looks lovely. She definitely looks as if she has established herself in her new home. Congratulations on your new job. A good start to 2020 altogether!

purdypuma · 22/12/2019 10:28

Awwww what a snuggly Christmas kitten thread!

I’m glad the two of you found each other. Xmas Smile

JoyceJames · 22/12/2019 10:53

I think you need a second one sharpish if you plan 2. Even after a month or two they don't always welcome newbies.

Ninkanink · 26/12/2019 21:58

@purdypuma How was Christmas with Milly? I hope it was lovely. 🎄
