As the title says my new kitten arrived this morning and she's absolutely adorable 😁 I did everything that I've read about getting a new kitten home and I've kept her in one room with her food/water, bed and litter tray and she has spent the last 10 hours hiding in the corner by the radiator Sad

I'm trying not to panic but she's only had a few pieces of dry food and no water all day.

She's come out a couple of times allowed us to stroke her (especially on her tummy) and then ran off behind the sofa 🤷‍♀️

Any other tips on what to do? I know she'll take her time to get used to us but I'm worried that she had no water all day.

Cats often barely drink anyway. Will you be offering wet food too as that is also a source of moisture

Winterdaysarehere · 10/11/2019 20:00

Is your camera broken op???

PinkBalloon123 · 10/11/2019 20:01

Never mind that. I need the picture!

FenellaVelour · 10/11/2019 20:02

Totally normal.
Admittedly both our current cats were older when we got them (2 and 8) but they both spent several days hiding, one under the bed and the other in a cupboard. You might find she ventures out later tonight when the house is quiet and it’s dark - that’s what ours did, and they had some food then.

Leave her alone.

Don't be waiting for her to pop out for food, water or litter tray.

Let her get comfortable with the surroundings and then, when she starts to explore the places where you are, pet her and fuss her.

LEave the food, water and litter in a room or space just for her.

NoodlingAlong · 10/11/2019 20:10

😆 at ‘is your camera broken?’

I think that’s totally normal, OP. No animal will starve themselves. Our rescue cat hid for weeks - she is currently tucked up in bed next to me Smile.

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/11/2019 20:18

It’s all normal, she’ll do everything when this two legged apex predator goes to bed.

gingerfreckles · 10/11/2019 20:37

Phew at least it's not us then haha!

Don't worry I'll post a picture as soon as she comes out from behind the sofa 🤦‍♀️

Get in there with a sardine then!

chocolatespiders · 10/11/2019 20:45

I got mummy and kitten last week and for 24 hours they stayed behind the tumble dryer. Mum was hissy and swiped me a few times. Each day they have grown in confidence and now both are totally adorable. Dds room is the is the chosen place and they love being on window sils gazing out. Feels like they have been here forever.

TheoriginalLEM · 10/11/2019 20:50

Pictures or it didn't happen Wink

gingerfreckles · 10/11/2019 20:54

So she's back from behind the sofa and had a pee ....yaay! On the carpet!!

I managed to get theses two pictures. She's still crying non stop poor thing.

Awww, she’s adorable ❤️

chocolatespiders · 10/11/2019 21:05

Have you tried putting a soft blanket down where she is hiding?
I also left radio on for first few nights. She will improve each day. Its all new to her.

TheoriginalLEM · 10/11/2019 21:06

Omg she is beyond stunning Envy I can't have a car as my dp is allergic and my dogs would kill it. Lucky for me I'm a vet nurse and get to cuddle lots of cats but it's not quite the same

cherryblossomgin · 10/11/2019 21:12

She will get there. Our kitten didn't eat, drink or use her litter tray for the first few days. She hid behind the fridge when she arrived. She was skittish, she is now a confident cat.

gingerfreckles · 10/11/2019 21:15

I did buy a lovely cat bed

Maybe a plug in pheromone would help? I got a multi cat one ahead of getting my new kittens and my existing cat has gone all soppy and affectionate Grin

gingerfreckles · 10/11/2019 21:20

Oops posted too soon.
But of course she's not even sniffed it. I might find a soft towel for her.
I was thinking of leaving the iPad on my son found some soothing cat music on YouTube.
Her name is Diva which appears to be living up to already and she had two different colour eyes which I'll post a photo of as soon as I can get close enough.

stophuggingme · 10/11/2019 21:33

Quite normal
The less a deal you make of it the soonfg she will stop. One of our twelve year old girls spent two days and nights hiding behind kitchen Kick boards. Have no idea how she got there but we just left water and food nearby. And a temp litter tray.n
By day three she was too nosey and wanted to inspect us so out she came.

Your kitten is just gorgeous btw

gingerfreckles · 14/11/2019 10:55

Just an update to say that kitty has been coming along in leaps and bounds (literally). We had a vet check up and there was a slight eye infection and because of her two coloured eyes we believe that there is some hearing impairment.
The vet also let us know that Diva was a boy Hmmso he has had a name change to King being that in the short space of time he is trying to run the show and expect tummy tickles on demand Smile

Pic. I'd post dinner food coma Grin

Oh my goodness he’s stunning. Will you have to keep him in?

Beamur · 14/11/2019 14:15

Sweet. I did wonder about his hearing when you posted the picture. Quite a lot of white cats have deafness associated, I think the eye colour has some genetic links.
He looks very content.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 14/11/2019 14:16

You might find she ventures out later tonight when the house is quiet and it’s dark - that’s what ours did, and they had some food then.

Ha - we just got a sibling pair - they're currently hiding under the TV unit in the spare room, and hissing when I go in to check their litter tray (well used) or give them food/water (appetite not an issue here). I am tolerated if I just sit there, but not approached.

Yesterday evening though, once I was downstairs and the kids had gone to bed, all I could hear was thumps and thuds as they played with a tennis ball I'd given them and bounced around the room with each other :)
