Where should the kitten sleep?

Hello! Today we brought home our brand new kitten. She is truly beautiful and is going to be very loved. We’ve never had a cat before but want to do everything right.
I just wondered where you would advise she sleep? I assumed I’d put her downstairs in the dining room but she is so tiny! Will she cry? Does she need to be in my room? Help wise people!

I have three cats, they've always slept wherever they want which is usually on my bedGrin

chocolatespiders · 05/10/2019 22:30

Somewhere warm and enclosed if kitten has just left mum.

ScreamingValenta · 05/10/2019 22:31

She is less likely to cry if she sleeps on your bed ... and who wouldn't want a kitten curled up on the bed? Grin

beaverbill · 05/10/2019 22:32

I’ll take her upstairs. I can’t bear the thought of leaving her downstairs. She’s currently fast asleep on DH. I’m at risk of becoming a crazy cat lady...who knew?!

I think a small cat bed on the foot of your own bed would be ideal. As she settles, it can then be moved to the floor....then another room etc.

When we got ours as kittens we used to put them into the kitchen to sleep in a fleecy bed but we had a brother and sister so they had each other for company. Plus they were a day past the age they can be taken from mum so incredibly tiny and the bedroom would have been too risky for them with lots of places to get lost in.

I can't see the photo? Grin

beaverbill · 05/10/2019 22:38

I have a bed for her and I thought I might be able to get her used to they then move her from my room as she gets older. Thanks for encouraging that plan! She’s just 8 weeks so I’m worried about her being alone!

Gosh that's pretty young for a kitten to be away from her mum. Keep a good eye on her eating, drinking, toileting etc.

Sorry, here she is...

I’ve spent a small fortune on cat beds but all the cats that I’ve ever owned slept/sleep on my bed, right in the middle and I sleep on the edge 😁

YobaOljazUwaque · 05/10/2019 22:58

What a good kitten!
She will probably have only ever slept in a pile of kittens so will be used to warmth. A not-too-hot hot water bottle, or 200g of rice put in a sock with a firm knot and microwaved for 20 sec will give her a warm thing to snuggle up to.

violetbunny · 05/10/2019 22:59

Why, on your bed of course 😀
We have two 8-month old kittens and this is how I woke up this morning...

Ah she’s cute!
Ours sleeps wherever she wants. Our other cats we used to put in the utility room over night but she seems to be spoiled. She mostly sleeps upstairs with my eldest. But if she’s being a pain he’ll put her away in the utility.

The other kitten of course was nestled snugly in a ball at my feet Grin

beaverbill · 05/10/2019 23:00

@Yoba oooh, good idea. I’ll go do that now!

eddiemairswife · 05/10/2019 23:00

She might appreciate a hot water in her cat bed.

ashtrayheart · 05/10/2019 23:01

Our kitten sleeps in the spare room with all his kitteny things. I would have him in our room but the dog sleeps in it!
She's cute btw

Shouldbeworkingnotreadingtalk · 05/10/2019 23:01

Oh that kitten definitely needs to be snuggled in the bed with you. 200%. 😆

Lindy2 · 05/10/2019 23:01

Our cat has always had a free choice of where to sleep. She moves around at night but always spends some time asleep on my feet.
With a kitty that small I'd be wanting her in my bedroom to make sure she is ok.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 05/10/2019 23:03

From experience

cats will sleep:

On my back
On the pillow beside my face
Across my legs
On the top stair
On the second from last stair
Inside my handbag
Inside DCs school bags
Inside my wardrobe
On my clean folded laundry
On a shoe
On the dog
On the dogs bed
On the chair I just got off to grab the remote before sitting back down again
In the bottom of the curtains
On the hand towel the pulled off the rail
On the printer
In any box regardless of size
On the mattress I’m trying to put sheets on
On the wall between my garden and next doors- waving a tail that next doors dog can almost, but not quite, reach.

Where cats will not sleep:

On a cat bed.

Plump82 · 05/10/2019 23:12

We had our kittens in the bedroom till little miss started peeing on the bed. I feel so bad for them though. This is the 3rd night we've done it and they wont stop crying 😥

Gertrudesgarden · 05/10/2019 23:14

Don't expect any sleep....there will be the two am rampage followed by the five am caterwaul and the triumph of the six thirty gallop. Ours were swiftly relocated to cosy beabag pet beds with blankies, placed on top of the kitchen table so out of drafts. Food, water, toys and trays all provided. Even at 19 years old, our remaining old boy can't be trusted and if left free, will sing opera to us from the foot of the bed at 3am.

Maryann1975 · 05/10/2019 23:21

Exactly what @JoxerGoesToStuttgart said above. I’m also going to add to that list that my cat sleeps on my bed just by the pillow. If I’m in the bed, she will attempt to sleep on my shoulder which is the exact same place as her favourite spot.

Dd was trying to get me to buy a cat bed today. There is no chance she would sleep in there!
When our cat was tiny, we let her sleep wherever she wanted, which was always with me. As she got older and started to go outside she would wake early wanting to be let out, so she now gets locked downstairs so she can’t disturb us.
