Cat owners/ experts: Why is my cat being sick?

I've taken my cat to the vets but I don't think it's done the trick. Just looking to see if your cat has experienced something similar and what the outcome was, please.

She started vomiting bile in the wee hours of Saturday morning over a week ago. The same thing happened Sunday morning and Monday morning. She went into the vets on that same Monday morning. She was given anti-sickness meds and antibiotics that visit and then went back every 2 days for more antibiotic injections. So her treatment finished Saturday (3 days ago).

I thought all was well now but she was sick again in the night last night. Just once rather than multiple times though.

I initially put her illness down to stress as we went away for a midweek break and left her with family. They kept her indoors the whole time and they have no other pets. She started vomiting the night she came back home. But it's all very unlike her. The only time she's ever sick is with fur balls.

Is it reasonable to assume she needs to go back to the vets if she continues to vomit bile nightly? She's very well in herself otherwise and eating and acting normally. She may be slightly constipated as a side note.

Sorry for such a long post! Didn't want to drip feed!

You need to get back to see the vet as it could be pancreatitis which is very painful and potentially serious. It may need iv fluids for dehydration, pain relief and something to help the inflammation if it is the pancreas.

They need to do bloods to determine the cause.

@pottedshrimps Thanks for your advice. I was hoping I might be worrying over something trivial but it seems not. I'll get her back in as soon as the vets can see her - hopefully tonight/ tomorrow.

Definitely back to the vets. A previous cat had this, turned out she'd got a massive hairball she couldn't shift.

Yes you need to go back. Vomiting can a sign of many different issues, including kidney problems, or something lodged in the stomach.

We're just moving this over to the litter tray for the OP. Flowers

I don't have any suggestions, but just marking a place because my cat (10yrs) occasionally vomits. She will go weeks and weeks with nothing, then may do it once a day for a few days, then nothing again. I don't think it's pancreatitis because my dog suffers from that and the dog is noticeably unwell, will sort of curve over (IFYSWIM) and the vomiting is very soon followed by diarrhoea (or vice versa). My cat, when she vomits, just seems to want to empty her stomach and is otherwise fine. I think she over stuffs herself with dried food to be honest. She'll make this weird howl, then you know you have seconds to get her outside before she throws up. 10 seconds after vomiting she's right as rain again.

@TheRobinIsBobbingAlong mine does this as well! It’s usually for a few days and then nothing and then a few months later it happens again. Every time I panic and book a vets appointment and then he’s better before I even get him to the vet. Very strange! Any idea why it is?

TheRobinIsBobbingAlong · 01/10/2019 17:05

Sorry @Banoffeepie91, I missed your message.

I'm really not sure why my cat does it tbh. As I say, I think she overstuffs herself and must have some sort of feeling of discomfort I guess, hence the weird howl just before she pukes. Mine's the same as yours in that it can be weeks or even months in between episodes. I don't even bother with the vet any more because they've never found anything wrong and she's always fine after vomiting. The howl is the weirdest thing ever though, almost like the deep howl she would give when she is faced with an intruder cat in the garden and they face off with each other.

My 1 year old cat was being sick almost every other day - after a few visits to the vet, we gave her meds and changed her food - since the food change, she only seems to vomit when she gulps her food down too quickly, which is thankfully rare.
