I'm so worried about my cat :-( He's lost his appetite and has occasionally been making this terrible sound like he's trying to cough or something's stuck :-( The vet is coming but it will be about half an hour or so.

He's otherwise responsive and wandering around and stuff. He's just more lethargic than usual.

Any ideas as to what this could be?

It might be a bit of grass that’s stuck in the soft palate. It can be quite common because of their anatomy.

FloatingObject · 01/09/2019 19:46

He comes when I call him for food and then licks a little so clearly has an appetite but then eats a piece or two and walks away sadly. Hes normally a really big eater.

fur ball ?
I hope hes better soon

FloatingObject · 01/09/2019 19:51

Can a furball get "stuck"?

OP posts:
FloatingObject · 01/09/2019 19:51

It's not the normal hairball sound, it's less guttural and more raspy

Fingers crossed there's something in his throat / mouth that shouldn't be, the vet whips it out easily straight away and cat is Smile again

Mummyto2munchkins · 01/09/2019 19:56

How's your fluffy friend OP?

fatfluffycushion · 01/09/2019 19:56

hmm not sure about them getting stuck , but it sounds like something is stuck , small bone perhaps ?

Mummyto2munchkins · 01/09/2019 19:57

Sent to soon sorry!
Is he/she wanting cuddles?

FloatingObject · 01/09/2019 19:57

I've had a look at his mouth and it seems fine, I've massaged his stomach and he isn't reacting in pain, same with his throat. Vet just called to say he'd be there in 30. Come on!!!!

FloatingObject · 01/09/2019 19:58

Mummy no, he just wants to sit there sadly dozing. If I stroke him he does purr though.

I have just been out to investigate awful yowling and found our cat sitting on the garden wall, shouting across next door's garden at another cat sitting on the opposite wall. The other cat looks exactly like him, we couldn't work out which was him at first. Weirdo. Hope that your little weirdo feels better soon 🐱

FloatingObject · 01/09/2019 20:01

@singingstones
I dont know if anyone else has a cat like this but this one gives me nothing but grief! I've got another cat who hasn't had a single problem in 3 years. This one is bloody hard work. I do love him though!

Is he Vaccinated? House cat? Flead/wormed?

Work in a veterinary practice, weve had a few poorly cats lately :(

UrsulaPandress · 01/09/2019 20:03

Did the vet turn up?

FloatingObject · 01/09/2019 20:03

Vaccinated, fleaed a month ago, worked a month ago and then I worked him again yesterday in case it was worms (he hadn't shown the coughing/breathing problems at that stage).

Goes outside but kept inside at night..

Aw! I hope your kitty feels better soon. I would be worried too. I love that your vet does housecalls. That's amazing!

FloatingObject · 01/09/2019 20:03

That's so cool that you work in a veterinary practice 😊

OP posts:
FloatingObject · 01/09/2019 20:04

Costs a pretty penny though! £120 consultation plus travel..... (I'm not in the UK). Worth it though for cases like this, Sunday night, etc.

OP posts:
FloatingObject · 01/09/2019 20:05

FFS wormed not worked!

OP posts:
thecatneuterer · 01/09/2019 20:09

It could be a bone stuck in his throat - that presents with similar symptoms. That needs surgery which a vet won't be able to do in your home. Good luck

stoneysongs · 01/09/2019 20:13

@FloatingObject Ours gets into fights now and then as I think he thinks it's his job to defend us from enemy cats. He has had one major health problem - crystals in his urine so he couldn't wee which is a medical emergency in cats (luckily I googled it in time). The vet kept having to catheterise him, which he said was very difficult: "he has the smallest penis I've ever seen on a cat" BlushGrin

BayandBlonde · 01/09/2019 20:18

I'm sure you will but make sure you tell the vet you've wormed twice in 4 weeks.

Let us know what vet the says

Mummyto2munchkins · 01/09/2019 20:25

We knew what you meant OP, you're just worried! How longs he been like it for? May possibly need to be put on a drip to hydrate him a bit if he's not been drinking much either! Poor little mite :(
