I seem to have been adopted ......

So a little black cat hanging around since Saturday, yesterday morning the cleaner let him in thinking he was our cat, DS fed him gave him water then put him out again.
Last night neighbour knocks asks if he's ours he keeps wandering into their house, today he's been in our house.
Neighbour put him on local lost pets, not much response and today we took him to the vets, no chip but he's neutered, and difficult to age but older than 7 due to lost teeth!
He's a lovely little cat, would love to keep him but my problem is my 13 year old, spoilt mummy's boy cat!
Today when he was in my cat was in my bed so just gently closed the door and let the little fella potter about downstairs - shall I keep doing that? Try and introduce them through a closed door?
I'm not trying to steal someone's cat but happy to look after him until he is claimed or not - left my details with the vet
Help?

Lovely! Yep, he's yours now.

elizabethreallyismissing · 02/08/2019 21:49

Lol! I hope so ! really worried about the scrap that may occur if they come face to face!
Should I bring him in to my house completely and shut him in s room, follow the advice for introducing s new cat? I guess that's the only thing I can do

I'll post a photo of the new cat tomorrow! He's all black even has black whiskers ! ❤️

I wouldn't shut him in yet, he could live nearby and be missed at home. You could put some "found cat" posters us in your local area, do ask for proof of ownership (such as photos) if someone claims him as theirs. Not everyone is online so may not have seen your neighbour's post.

elizabethreallyismissing · 02/08/2019 22:48

Vivat thank you that's a good idea!

I'll get on that tomorrow.

Sorry Viccat - spell check!

Do a paper collar in case he’s owned but fancies a polygamous relationship.

kimlo · 03/08/2019 07:58

do you have local groups on facebook that aren't about lost pets? Mine has lost and found pets put on.

Did the vets put them on their facebook page?

Have you rang other near by vets?

I have a cat that wanders in to my house all the time. I know she lives near by, don't know where but she has a home, I even know her name. She just has a couple of houses she goes in to if she fancys it, so much so that when she was ran over she was taken to the house of the people I thought owned her and the people who took her were told she didn't live there she lived a couple of streets away.

What you going to call him?

Alltheprettyseahorses · 03/08/2019 08:37

If the cat is healthy-looking, it may just be exploring the area so just put it outside and don't let it in again because it's not your cat.

And I have to say this too - don't feed strange cats because you don't know if they are on a controlled diet and you could actually make them ill. My cat has mild Manx Cat Syndrome which means he has a very delicate digestive system and if he ate anything other than his special food it would result in liquid shit for days. If this happened and I found out it was because someone had decided to feed a random cat I would be beyond furious.

Not all cats will wear a collar and not all owners use the local vet. Just put it outside and don't let it in again.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 03/08/2019 11:02

OTOH some cats do get lost and feeding them and giving them shelter saves their lives.

elizabethreallyismissing · 03/08/2019 12:21

Right he's been outside on my front lawn all night.

I'll put him some water out and get on the poster making. My cat is obviously catching on as he's guarding the downstairs from the vantage point of the sofa! 🙁

thecatneuterer · 03/08/2019 12:39

Of course you should feel him. He is almost certainly lost or abandoned (cats are often thrown on the streets when their owner dies for example), it's only finding people to feed that saves their lives.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 03/08/2019 14:03

NO!!! Don't feed strange cats! You can make them seriously ill. Good grief!

Most cats are not lost or abandoned, they are pets. You will be able to see if the cat's condition is deteriorating and as no concerns have been mentioned and the animal must be friendly and confident if it's behaving as described, it's clearly fine. It will be someone's pet and they will worry it has been killed or something and may never know what's happened. How would you like it if someone was trying to steal your pet?

viccat · 03/08/2019 14:24

The number of cats who could get "seriously ill" from eating normal cat food is absolutely miniscule compared to the number of stray and abandoned cats out there.

Of course there's a difference between intentionally feeding a suspected stray and just putting food out all the time so that all neighbourhood cats are attracted to it.

ithinkiammelting · 03/08/2019 14:30

Cats do seem to make a habit of deciding who they want to live with. It appears that you are the chosen one Grin

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 03/08/2019 14:32

You can't just say don't feed a stray cat, I depends on the circumstances!

elizabethreallyismissing · 03/08/2019 14:46

Well he's still out the front, text someone I know who lives the other end of the street she's going to ask around and I've put a card with my telephone number in the local shop.

I really don't want to steal someone's cat, he's not just appearing and disappearing, he has taken up residence in my front garden.

I'm doing my best find his owners honestly.

OP posts:
EachandEveryone · 03/08/2019 18:49

Have you fed him? I would have to,!

elizabethreallyismissing · 04/08/2019 15:13

I have fed him yes!

He's been in the front garden all weekend!

Just let him into our man cave - I think my cat has seen him but pointedly ignored it.

Will see what happens over the next few days I think.

I feel so sorry for him, he's very affectionate!

Here he is. I really don't think anyone is looking after him.

I seem to have been adopted ......

He's lovely 💗💗💗. How is it going with him?

WTCT · 04/08/2019 16:29

NO!!! Don't feed strange cats! You can make them seriously ill. Good grief!

Don’t be ridiculous. Cats eat all manner of things outside a house. If your cat is on that strict a diet, they should be kept indoors.

Gustavo1 · 04/08/2019 16:33

I think you can safely give him some love and water without fear of stealing him. It will soon become obvious whether he is being fed elsewhere. If not, you can start to offer some biscuits or something. Going full out on wet food and dreamies is as close to bribery as possible in the cat world Grin

viques · 04/08/2019 16:37

Aw, he's a cutie. I wonder why people would get their cat neutered but not bother to microchip them at the same time. Daft.
