How much do you spend on cat litter?

Disclaimer- I’m a first time cat owner so please be gentle!

Just wondering if I’m doing something wrong with my cats litter as I’m spending a fortune on it. He has 2 litter trays (extra large ones from pets at home as he’s a biggish breed) which I completely empty and refill once a week. I also scoop out once a day. I get through 3 8L bags of Catsan cat litter a week. These are the only size and brand they have in my local shop although I wouldn’t be able to carry a bigger one anyway as I don’t currently drive. It costs £6.50 a bag, so £19.50 a week.

I use a bag each to refill the trays and the other bag I use to replace the bits I scoop out during the week. I used to buy the liners too but they don’t seem to do anything. If I put less than about 3/4 bag in the tray it doesn’t look deep enough for cat to dig to cover poo (not that he does anyway, he just stands in it, freaks out, then runs around the house crying).

I really need a third litter tray as our house is 3 floors and cat has hazard a few accidents on the floor that doesn’t have a tray. But I don’t want to spend another £25 a month!

I’m going to do a big online order which gets the cost down a fair bit and saves me lugging it about. But I’m doing something really obvious wrong aren’t I? Is everyone spending crazy money on cat litter?

Try worlds best cat litter. You won't need to change it so frequently and it keeps the bad scent away much better than any other litter I've tried. I order it on zooplus.

CircleofWillis · 07/07/2019 20:17

We have one litter box and put 5 litres of Felight litter in once a week. We scoop out as soon as we see a mess and we wash the litter box between litter changes.

We get through one ten litre bag every two weeks at a cost of around £5.

We don't have much of a smell by the end of the week until you disturb the litter, but the litter box has a cover and we have experimented with lots of different brands.

Out cat seems able to cope with one box over 3 floors. We keep it in the upstairs bathroom.

We use Tesco Value stuff. €2.69 a bag and we use one a week. Sorted : )

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 07/07/2019 20:17

(and that's for two cats)

HelloJackieYouLookNice · 07/07/2019 20:19

I use cats best and since swapping from pellets I am spending much less. I scoop the poo as soon as I see it and the clumps every few days. They use one tray more than the others so that gets changed more often but even that one isn’t more than every 3 weeks or so. I probably get through a medium sized bag every 6 weeks or so. I order from Zooplus, I think it’s about £15 for the size I buy.

TheQueef · 07/07/2019 20:20

Two and a kitten, four trays and use woodpellet stuff.
Deliver with Amazon prime £28 for three 30litre bags.

dementedpixie · 07/07/2019 20:21

Use clumping litter and then you need to do a complete change less often

CircleofWillis · 07/07/2019 20:22

Don't be tempted by organic natural litters. We used some for a few weeks - they were very smelly and we got cockroaches which were expensive to get rid of.

PristineCondition · 07/07/2019 20:23

Wood pellets £5 every two weeks.

Spending £20 a week firebombing that goes in the bin is ridiculous

Corcra · 07/07/2019 20:23

Hi. I’m a new cat owner too 😊
I use the Aldi stuff. It’s less than €2 and I scoop out when I see she’s gone. Also I do use the liners and change them about twice a week. I use one bag a week. I don’t fill the litter too deep. I’ve one. I try to keep her downstairs (blocking off the stairs).

PristineCondition · 07/07/2019 20:23

•For something not firebombing

AwkwardPaws27 · 07/07/2019 20:25

I get the "world's best multicat litter" delivered by Fetch (free delivery). I pay about £30 for 12.7kg, which lasts two cats about 6-8 weeks.
It's corn-based and flushable, so you can scoop and flush daily, rather than changing the whole tray.

TheQueef · 07/07/2019 20:26

Should say the kitten has had horrendous shits, I'm hoping not to use 90litre a month forever.

MashedSpud · 07/07/2019 20:26

Wood pellets, £4.50 from Tesco. It lasts around two weeks.

lljkk · 07/07/2019 20:26

I guess I'm a minger coz I only spend about £18 once a ... maybe once a year, for 2 large bags of simple wood pellets. Mine mostly go outside but are locked in overnight, too. We don't use one that clumps the wee. 3 cats, 3 trays. Only one of the trays is heavily used, probably needs a complete change once a week or so.

dementedpixie · 07/07/2019 20:26

I don't think you're supposed to flush cat poo

Ticklingcheese · 07/07/2019 20:30

I have said this on another thread, but I use chicken starter feed, granulated. Should (says the internet) be the same as 'world's best'.

I use starter feed and love it. If you don't scoop the pee straight away, it clumps perfectly, mine smells of rye bread 😁, and you can buy it in large quantities, so much cheaper. It is not poisonous if they lick their paws, and can go in the toilet in small quantities (I put poo in toilet).

I have 3 trays and scoop very regularly, changing the whole tray every 2. Week (couldn't with old litter). All trays are filled 3/4 up to the rim.

Best of luck 😀.

Ticklingcheese · 07/07/2019 20:34

demented x posted, can I ask why not poo in toilet?

I'm not in UK (Scandinavia) and have not heard of this until mn.

dementedpixie · 07/07/2019 20:38

Something to do with Toxoplasmosis I think

ooooohbetty · 07/07/2019 20:39

I used to spend a fortune until I ran out and went to my local corner shop and bought the cheapest ever cat litter and found it was better than my expensive stuff. It cost £1.49 a bag.

Holenewme · 07/07/2019 20:45

Ooh, I’ve not heard of using chicken starter feed. I’ve got a garage full of that stuff! Thanks so much for that tip, if that does the job then I’ll be sorted for months.

I don’t know if my cat is just really stinky? I was hoping it would lessen a bit after he was neutered but no such luck so far. I’ve tried those scented pellets but he puts his front paws in the tray and shits on the mat in protest. He will just about tolerate the scented dust stuff. He goes outside a couple of hours a day but comes back in to use his tray.

When I empty his litter at the end of the week there’s normally 1-2 wee clumps that I’ve missed but I always get the poo out straight away. He stands in it though and gets it all over the grains so they stink and I can’t get it all out at once. By about day 5 I can smell it as soon as I open the front door which is a whole floor away from the nearest tray.

Worlds best is a game changer. I get it monthly from Amazon - £28

Stinky cat

How much do you spend on cat litter?

Autumnchill · 07/07/2019 20:50

Ah yes but I would put up with stinky to cuddle that 😁

AwkwardPaws27 · 07/07/2019 20:52

Infected cats only shed oocytes for two weeks, and as my two barely go out and are not predatory or fed raw meat, they are extremely low risk for toxoplasmosis.
