How much do you spend on cat litter?

Disclaimer- I’m a first time cat owner so please be gentle!

Just wondering if I’m doing something wrong with my cats litter as I’m spending a fortune on it. He has 2 litter trays (extra large ones from pets at home as he’s a biggish breed) which I completely empty and refill once a week. I also scoop out once a day. I get through 3 8L bags of Catsan cat litter a week. These are the only size and brand they have in my local shop although I wouldn’t be able to carry a bigger one anyway as I don’t currently drive. It costs £6.50 a bag, so £19.50 a week.

I use a bag each to refill the trays and the other bag I use to replace the bits I scoop out during the week. I used to buy the liners too but they don’t seem to do anything. If I put less than about 3/4 bag in the tray it doesn’t look deep enough for cat to dig to cover poo (not that he does anyway, he just stands in it, freaks out, then runs around the house crying).

I really need a third litter tray as our house is 3 floors and cat has hazard a few accidents on the floor that doesn’t have a tray. But I don’t want to spend another £25 a month!

I’m going to do a big online order which gets the cost down a fair bit and saves me lugging it about. But I’m doing something really obvious wrong aren’t I? Is everyone spending crazy money on cat litter?

Sorry about the poo, poo, poo post - was about to put a picture there for comparison, consider yourselves lucky, I had second thoughts 😁.

I have one cat with 1 litter tray and use the Bob Martin Stayfresh cat litter from B&M. It's 10l and only £2.99.

I change it at least once a week and use 5l at a time so each bag does for a couple of weeks.

tickling he does have soft poo. It holds its shape but not a lot. I’d describe it as Mr Whippy consistency if I had to! Is that soft enough to see the vet about? He has 50/50 wet and dry food so maybe i could try using slightly more dry food for a bit to firm him up a bit.

I’m not keen on the idea of having an open litter tray. I have a very clumsy 3yo who would no doubt fall face first into it within minutes.

🤣 you just had me google Mr. Whippy (I'm not in UK).

But unless he's very, very young that is soft. First try Zoolac propaste, see if it helps. If not talk to your vet (exaggerate if you really have to). Imo it won't harm with one try of antibiotics, but they are very restricted with this (my dd is a vet student and agrees). Don't think you need to change the 50/50 he needs the fluids.

Aand here goes a picture 😁, this is what to aim for:

Eerh consistency wise, this was buried and full of chicken feed on the surface.

As we had outside storage I bought a pallet of wood pellets. Thats 96 x 10kg bags for what equates to just over £3 a 10kg bag. It costs more if it's for cat litter or horse bedding because you have to pay the full VAT on it as opposed to the 5% solid fuel VAT. (So obviously you let them know you have a solid fuel boiler)

I shared the cost of the pellets with a few friends and have around 10 bags left. And now the bloody cat has decided a litter tray isn't for her any more and does it in our garden like a dog. Even pawing at the door to be let out. So now I have a shit load of wood pellet litter sitting under an inch of dust and cobwebs in my mother's barn. So much for money saving buying in bulk.... at least they don't go off I suppose.

orange i hated the wood pellets, but buy a horse, wood pellets are great for horse pee 😁.

30l bag of pawpuss wood litter delivered from amazon once every couple of months - about 12 quid I think? Bloody love it, I’ve tried loads and this doesn’t track, is environmentally happy and doesn’t stink. Change weekly / scoop poo when it appears Grin

One of my deliveries was delayed recently and I tried the Sainsbury’s own non clumping. Smelt lovely, had a scent to it which hid all smells. 2.75 for a smallish pack but did the job, and arrived with the food shop.

I use Cats Best and scoop twice a day. Top-up litter as necessary and complete change once a month. No problems.

To be honest if it smells that bad though the problem isn't the litter but what you're feeding the cat. I bet if you put them on a good quality grain free wet food or raw within a few weeks it will smell a whole lot less.

Jamsangwich · 09/07/2019 13:08

World's Best for my boy. Originally we had them on recycled paper litter but moved them onto this because of the clumping. It's amazing.

caringcarer · 09/07/2019 13:14

My son's cat goes outside to toilet and has a large cat flap that cat and dog uses to go in and out of garden to sunbath during the day. Cat has recently had kittens and they are now almost 8 weeks but won't let leave for new homes until 10 weeks. Kittens are using Morrison's savers cat litter but expensive mousse food. We will keep one kitten and she too will learn to use cat flap when old enough to go out after vaccinations.

We worked out the other day that over the course of a year, our cat litter costs about £1200 Confused.

Shmithecat2 · 09/07/2019 19:02

£10 a week. 2 large litter trays, 5 cats that go outside mostly (indoors at night), obviously, litter scooped throughout the day, and then total bin and deep clean/refresh once a week. I use a pearl style clumping litter.

sweetkitty · 11/07/2019 00:22

Two cats of Tesco basic litter a week for 2 cats, 2 large covered litter trays. Scoop poo everyday and full clean every 2 days. I don’t know how some of you get away with only cleaning every week/month. Think the own brand stuff works out at £5 a week.

I’ve tried loads of different brands Asda own label is rubbish like grit for the road, Catsan good but expensive. Don’t like the wood pellets although buy them for the rabbits.

porridgeface · 11/07/2019 00:49

2 x indoor cats with 2 tray. I used worlds best flushable for years but have recently switched to the tigerino crystals which has far less tracking and not as smelly. I use a 5l bag, get the poo out straight away and do a full change once a week.

One of my cats had soft poo for ages and then I put him on royal canin hairball and it firmed it up. Apparently pumpkin helps too but only after vets has ruled anything sinister out.

notangelinajolie · 11/07/2019 00:52

Totally not getting the point here but why can't your cat go outside to poo and wee?

Holenewme · 11/07/2019 07:20

notangelina I do let him outside but he doesn’t like to stay out for long. He’s pretty nervous as there’s a massive tomcat that struts around the area who he’s terrified of. I’m hoping as he gets bigger he might become brave enough to at least do wees outside.
