Very Confident New Kitten

Have a 16 week old Maine Coon, who has been with us for 2 weeks. It has been 9 years since I have had a kitten, but blimey, it is harder work than I remember.

He has no fear. We cant let him roam yet as there are too many plants and open banisters, where he can fall 2 floors. He goes straight to the banisters to jump through or balance on.

He wants to get to the skylights, spends a lot of time trying to get to our bedroom ceiling light from the bed, just about wants to do anything where he will get hurt. My other cats weren't like this. He'll be out the 3 storey windows if we forget they are open.

He runs around like a crazy thing ( DD 7 spends hours playing with him).

When do they carm down and when would you let him around the house? We carry him from room to room.

And when do they stop trampling poo from the litter try into the carpet?

My bengals 10 and has calmed down slightly.

We had him from 17 weeks and I’m over kittens for life now. He used to get on the roof at the last house and it wasn’t a bungalow either.

I have a mat thing that goes in the floor by the litter tray which catches excess litter and unwanted stuff which may help..
just let him ,he will learn .

DaphneduM · 02/06/2019 09:01

Please can we have a picture of your new kitten?

PurpleSweetPeas · 02/06/2019 09:02

We have a 4 month old kitten and he's the same. Full of energy all of the time until he crashes and falls instantly asleep.

We have a litter tray mat and it's great. A large one was £12 ish from pets at home

Adorable kittens! I’m afraid my livewire kitten continued in his ways although somehow has managed not to get injured. He has been out the skylight and onto the three storey roof twice Blush

Fluffycloudland77 · 02/06/2019 09:40

Gorgeous little kittens!

LucheroTena · 02/06/2019 09:41

They can be livewires. I was pretty shocked by how agile they were when we got ours (first cats). You have to toddler proof ++. Ours were much less kamakazi by 6 months. I started to let them out at about 10 months as they were reasonably sensible by then.

IceniSky · 02/06/2019 09:52

He does this sideways tiptoe walk randomly and then runs at full pelt around the room.

What beautiful babies - so cute!

wheresmymojo · 02/06/2019 13:46

@IceniSky

You mean 'arch back side bum'? Grin

justilou1 · 02/06/2019 13:57

He’s SOOOOOOO cute!!!

nocoolnamesleft · 02/06/2019 14:00

Difficult to judge level of overwhelming cuteness from one picture. Do you have more?

(Awwwwww, squeeeee)

Minkies11 · 02/06/2019 14:02

Don't think I slept much when my 2 bengals were kittens - they just didn't have an off switch. Still don't come to think of it. Never been so sleep deprived in my life.

DameDoom · 02/06/2019 14:17

Oh they are just gorgeous- truly delightful. I have resigned myself to never going through the kitten stage again though. They are all mental... in the best possible way.

Fluffycloudland77 · 02/06/2019 14:26

The thing with these active breeds is that you think “they’ll be outside, being active” but in reality they’ll be in your face miaowing loudly for entertainment or the sofa gets it.

Then the sofa gets it anyway.

viccat · 02/06/2019 15:51

My youngest boy was like this! I had to do lots of catproofing. I got clear plastic baby guard for the banisters upstairs, moved some furniture to stop him climbing and so on...

He only really calmed down around 7 months of age and stopped doing things like jumping onto the top of open doors.

BikeTart · 02/06/2019 15:57

Ah, the old arch-back-side-bum move. I remember that.

He's lovely, OP, but he's definitely got that kitten gleam in his eye like he's planning his next adventure.

More pictures would help though, obvs.

IceniSky · 02/06/2019 15:57

Clear plastic. I'll look for that, but when we blocked it up, he jumped onto the top and balanced.

When do they stop eating plants as scared be will poison himself!

Minkies11 · 02/06/2019 16:01

Mine still randomly attack my plants (they are 3 now). Have to have a non-toxic garden Sad

ipswichwitch · 02/06/2019 16:15

Still waiting for our 2yo bundle of fun to calm down! At least she’s stopped chewing electrical cables..

sarahC40 · 02/06/2019 17:11

I think you’ll find that walk is called doing the ‘evil hench-cat thing’. I miss those days...my grown up kitten/nutter has just come down from the roof after a good telling off (neighbours think I’m mad) because he was edging forward as though he was going to jump.

Minkies11 · 03/06/2019 15:33

I call it the sideways skedaddle. Am hoping they never grow out of it Grin
