Am I mad to consider 3rd cat?

Have 2 x rescue girls, 2.5 and nearly 2. One is thick as pigshit and very sociable and personable and always rolling over and chirruping at the other one to play. She came from a Romanian dog rescue charity and spent the first 18 months of her life in a shelter there with other cats and dogs, and was living in a house with cats and dogs when first fostered in the uk. The other was a stray from a local rescue, she is very very pretty but not keen on being handled - tolerates stroke and head rubs then hisses and buggers off and ignores all the Romanian's attempts to chase /play.

Romanian has taken to lurking then pouncing on stray from around corners. Stray swats her, Romanian rolls over and chirrups. Stray swats her again, hisses and walks away. Romanian follows stray eagerly, gets hissed at agai or death stares then gives up and bugs humans for attention.

Considering a male kitten to change up thy dynamic....viewing one tmrw a.m.

Grew up with 3 cats and best mate always has 5 or more cats.

I can't decide if no. 3 is a good idea or not.

How much money have you got?

Beamur · 27/04/2019 22:38

Sounds like your friendly cat wants a chum. Good call to look at a male.
As long as you have enough room and spaces for your cats to get away from each other they should be ok.
Are they toileting outside? Not enough litter trays can cause unhappiness in shared homes.

Costs of 3rd are doable.... Have priced up insurance, vets flea/worm/jabs programme and food.

Dearly beloved and now departed old senior boy was The Most Expensive Cat Ever re vet fees. I do know what I'm potentially getting into.

Yes they have garden access, litter tray provided but little used. I put out two in the winter and 3 if I go away for weekend or am keeping them in for any reason.

Don't do it don't do it don't do it. We did. It's changed the dynamics with the first two and now they're all constantly whiny, running around like lunatics winding each other up, there is never a space or time without at least one cat in it. Two is good. Three somehow feels like there's 15

Frangipane · 27/04/2019 23:12

I'd say do it. I had 2 for years, brothers. They just about tolerate each other but only by staying away from each other. Then along came a stray kitten. I didn't think keeping him was a good idea but I couldnt resist the cuteness. The dynamics sure changed and for the better. One miserable old brother rather likes the young infiltrator and actually plays with him in a way I have never seen him do with his brother. He has had a completely new lease of life. The other old man is fat and the young one keeps him active. If a change of dynamics is what you are after, I think a 3rd will provide it.

I would have liked three, but then I got Cheddar. She makes up for about 4 cats!

Fluffycloudland77 · 28/04/2019 08:07

Why isn’t the stray being rescued?.

coldlocation · 28/04/2019 08:25

The beautiful but fiesty Stray is one of my current cats, I've had her a year. I got her 4 after getting the Romanian.

4 months.

I do all I can to stop the Romanian stalking The Stray.

... Off to view potential 3rd cat at ten... Any more opinions welcome..

viccat · 28/04/2019 10:45

Yes, I say do it!
I have four now and they are great together. My older boy especially became so much happier when I adopted the kittens and he's really bonded with the boy kitten.

In regards to what someone says above about there being no space or time without a cat in it... Yes, that's true to a great extent (except wen they're all sleeping for a few hours early evening) but I have cats because I love having cats so it's not a negative! Sometimes I wish I could go to the kitchen without at least two cats following me though. Grin

He looks like a Bengal to me.

coldlocation · 28/04/2019 13:12

Mum is Bengal, dad a big tabby.

OP posts:
Fluffycloudland77 · 28/04/2019 13:21

Well, he’ll be playful. I’d look at the Bengal breed rescue page though, so you know exactly what can go wrong with putting a dominant breed into multi cat households.

I hope your not being charged for him. No responsible breeder let’s a queen get out. Security should be watertight.

coldlocation · 28/04/2019 13:28

£50 to cover vaccs, worm and flea treatment and vet checks (has already had one) . I met the mum and dad and the one cat the family kept from last years litter. Mum is not a pedigree bengal just a tabby bengal cross, family moggy type cat.

Beamur · 28/04/2019 13:33

Gorgeous kitty.

viccat · 28/04/2019 13:34

But why on earth are they letting their cats breed? Poor mum cat going into season all the time and being used to produce kittens - there is already a huge cat overpopulation problem Angry

Fluffycloudland77 · 28/04/2019 14:53

He’s got quite a lot of Bengal in him. www.thebengalcatclub.com/rehoming--welfare.html

You really need to look at what can happen with this breed.

MeltedEggMum · 28/04/2019 14:59

What are Bengals like, then? No good with other cats?

coldlocation · 28/04/2019 15:08

Can be very domineering.

OP posts:
Fluffycloudland77 · 28/04/2019 15:09

They are very feisty, it’s not all of them and there’s a poster on here with several, but they are very dominant cats who don’t take any prisoners, they won’t let anything drop either. We’ve been here 6 years and my cats still fighting next doors cat. He’s still cross the cat next door lives next door.

Recently a new cat has moved into the area and my cat was weeing on the walls and is very unsettled. We’re over the weeing now but he’s still on high alert.
