What do you brush your cat with?

What's the best cat brush out there? We've had our cat for 6 years but this year his fur is getting everywhere. He isn't really a lap cat so we're having to take advantage of every time he's close to brush him but it never seems to be enough.

Is the Furminator worth the £10? We use what I think is called a soft slicker brush and can easily brush and empty it 10 times before he gets up and walks away, I think that if I continued to brush it'd never end! Because he gets fed up of being brushed and walks off I want to get the most hair off him in the shortest time. Any recommendations for a good brush?

He's a domestic short hair, a very large domestic short hair (not fat, just a really big cat).

A metal comb, grooming rake and a kids tangle teaser for my long haired Persian. And a zoom groom and a cheaper version of a furminator for my Persian Exotic. (She doesn't like being groomed)

Toddlerteaplease · 03/04/2019 17:37

The cheaper version of the furminator from Amazon is just as good as a branded one.

MaisyMary77 · 03/04/2019 17:43

I’ve got a furminator-which is really good. However he doesn’t like it and the last time I brushed him he tried very hard to eat me. Normally he’s a great big softy!

SweetbutaPsycho · 03/04/2019 17:45

My long haired cat has a furminator, miki rake, comb and slicker brush

mollpop · 03/04/2019 20:55

My cat hates the furminator. It's very effective though

He would have us brush him all day,...every day. He’s a longish domestic short hair.

We have a set of grooming mitts. Our cat really likes getting a brush and the mitts mean we can give his tail some attention as he doesn't like it being combed or brushed

Chocolateisfab · 03/04/2019 21:01

Trying to keep this hush hush but ds uses dd's hairbrush!!

Peterpiperpickedwrong · 03/04/2019 21:04

One of these. He loves it, wouldn’t let me near with an actual brush. Started off just giving the odd stroke and built up familiarity and now he starts purring as soon as I put it on. It gets loads of hairs out too. I got mine off eBay for a couple of quid.

People brush their cats??
I've had cats my whole life and didn't even know this was a thing!
Always had short-ish haired tabbies, they never moult.

chemenger · 03/04/2019 21:13

I had a foster who we couldn't touch for the first three months and who was too stressed to groom himself. When he eventually came round he loved being brushed with a wire slicker brush. I eventually filled a tissue box with the fur that came out, I was going to try making a felt version of him, but there was too much dandruffy stuff (yuk) in the fur. He was my greatest fostering success.

Previous cats loved the zoom groom, and also a simple metal comb.

hagsrus0 · 03/04/2019 21:22

Small hedgehog?

wibbleee · 03/04/2019 21:26

furminator. its fabulous, after combing our cat you have what looks like a hamster if I added googly eyes lol! yes its worth the money. gets all the deep down fur unlike the standard flea comb.

Peterpiperpickedwrong · 03/04/2019 22:31

Really? Our sofa is constantly covered in cat hair (along with clothes, tv, carpet) and when brushing I still get a fist size ball off him! We hoover daily and it’s all covered again in hours. I’d better not tell DH there are cats that don’t moult, he hates the cat hair but I’ve told him I will get rid of him before the cat Grin

YesQueen · 03/04/2019 22:32

A hairbrush Grin or a flea comb. He loves it and will sit all day being brushed and making googly faces at me

SoMuchFluff · 04/04/2019 08:25

Thanks for the replies. I'll have a look at all of your suggestions.

I feel like I gave the wrong impression in my initial post. He does come to us for a cuddle and he'll purr like crazy when we brush him but then he gets up after 10 minutes. Sometimes he will come for a cuddle in the evenings, when we're watching TV, then after a few minutes he gets up and sits at the other end of the couch. We joke that he knows we crave a cuddle from him so he gives us what we want, but only in small doses. He often comes for a cuddle and after less than 2 minutes he gets up and meows at us so loudly, that's his way of telling us he wants food. He's given us what we want, now he wants what he wants.

Have to catch it first 🤣

Madcats · 04/04/2019 15:24

Madcat DEMANDS to be groomed with his brush like Meretricious linked to. He has soo much fur for a siamese. Being a silicone/plastic it is also useful to lift hair off carpet/furniture by scraping along the edge).
We must have had it for a good 8 or 9 years, if not longer.

He particularly likes being massaged on the head with the 'bristles".

Furrytoebean · 04/04/2019 15:46

We have one hairbrush for everyone in the household Blush
It's one of those tangle tease ones and our cats sing to be brushed whenever either of us brushes our hair.

timtam23 · 04/04/2019 21:37

I have a furminator but I think they are a bit harsh on the coat. I like the Zoom Groom as a few others have linked to above. Cats seem to love being stroked/massaged with these.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 05/04/2019 11:22

We have a silicon mitt thing. Our cat wafts fur behind her with every step. She’s also white, so it’s a messy business. Good job we love her.

agnurse · 06/04/2019 03:52

Biggie has a couple of wire brushes. He is a medium hair and sheds quite a bit. The others are short haired and so it's less of an issue.

Biggie is not terribly fond of being groomed but will submit to it if His Daddy does it. Sometimes he tries to eat the brush Grin

MitziK · 07/04/2019 17:30

There's a furminator, a plastic toothed brush like further up the thread, a natural bristle clothes brush, combs...not the metal slicker, though, as they found that a bit too scratchy with their habit of shoving whatever bit of their body into it.

Their favourite is whatever the other TwatCat is being brushed with at the time, followed shortly afterwards by any human brush.

So I gave up and now use whatever hairbrush I own that has been replaced by a new one. Whilst giving Mr TwatCat an old toothbrush to murder.

Crazycat16 · 09/04/2019 14:30

Grooming glove, this was just a few minutes of stroking Grin

Toddlerteaplease · 09/04/2019 15:22

I've used my own hairbrush if I spot a knot on magic and no other brides within reach. She's not got fleas .
