Cats with no teeth at all...

Do they manage ok? Poor little Snow cat is off to have ALL her teeth removed tomorrow. Not something I'm particularly educated about! Will she need specific food/no dry?

Ollie is having his removed today
I'm planning to feed applaws mousse for a while until his gums heal and also a kitten food he adores

Wavingwhiledrowning · 03/01/2019 13:10

Our cat had all his teeth removed a few years ago. It doesn't seem to bother him at all. He has both wet and dry food (I think he actually preferred dry at first as he just swallowed it whole!). Amazingly he's still a prolific (and effective) hunter. Not sure how he does it, but somehow he still brings us 'treats' (including pigeons!). The only down side of him having no teeth is the dribbling. Everywhere. It's a bit grim! When he shakes his head after having some water/food and sprays dribble everywhere it drives DH up the wall!

Ollivander84 · 03/01/2019 13:21

Mine is in recovery and has just his bottom fang left!

trinitybleu · 03/01/2019 13:29

One of ours had 8 out recently... Vet said she always tries to leave the four canines as that holds their tongue in and reduces the drooling.

Justonedayatatime11 · 03/01/2019 14:10

Thanks. Poor cat has an autoimmune disease which means all her teeth and gums are rotten and she's only 2 Sad. She loves her food! Thanks Ollivander I'll have a look at zooplus!

I've currently got four completely toothless cats and have had probably dozens over the years. They all manage fine and even crunch dry food.

On the plus side it means they can't bite you and makes taking to the vets and giving pills a breeze.

Vinorosso74 · 03/01/2019 17:53

Oh bless poor toothless cats! Wishing them speedy recoveries.
We had a cat with one tooth at CP a while back. He bit one of the staff with that one tooth resulting in her needing to go to minor injuries or walk in centre! He wasn't aggressive but was food obsessed. She'd been giving him Dreamies and he obviously thought it was worth trying to eat her hand. So do beware of a one toothed cat!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 03/01/2019 20:17

Harry's lost a lot of teeth, including all four fangs and a lot at the sides. He still eats dry food, although we do give him wet as he's also got a weak jaw. He'd eat dry all the time if we'd let him!

Ollivander84 · 03/01/2019 20:21

@thecatneuterer sadly mine still had 5 teeth as they were trying to do his pre op bloods Blush his notes said uncooperative Grin
He has his bottom fang left, everything else is out and he's absolutely stoned from the GA!

Justonedayatatime11 · 03/01/2019 23:07

Ollivander how does the inside of his mouth look? I can't get my head around the thought of her coming home tomorrow with her gums all stitched up Sad

OP posts:
Ollivander84 · 04/01/2019 06:20

I haven't looked TBH as he's not the best with having his mouth poked! He's demolished three pouches of food so no issues eating Grin

Justonedayatatime11 · 04/01/2019 14:38

All teeth out except 4, x ray showed bronchitis scars (?) so she's coming home with a load of steroids and a nebuliser... any ideas how that works on a cat?!?!

Here are Harry’s remaining teeth!

I hope Snow and Ollie are doing ok

She's made her way through 2 sachets of cat soup, I'm quite impressed. Very wobbly and hallucinating like a mad thing thanks to the ketamine. Poor baby

OP posts:
PinkSparklyPussyCat · 05/01/2019 10:37

Oh bless her. Harry has do not administer ketamine on his notes as I won't let him have it now as he's had such bad reactions, completely wiped out and walking into the walls when he tried to move. The vet told me it was his age or his kidneys but when we changed vets they said he'd only had it the last couple of times and that's when he had the reaction so they agreed not to give it to him.

I hope it wears off soon.

Justonedayatatime11 · 05/01/2019 11:31

It's worn off this morning thank goodness and she's had a bounce around the garden. Can't/won't eat the gourmet pate but is managing ok with cat soup. I'm guessing this will improve with time??

HARRY!!!!! :) :)

All the best to those slaves whose babies have had teeth extracted :)

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 05/01/2019 13:13

That's good news. Harry's reaction was quite bad and it took him 3 or 4 days to get back to normal.

Harry had been on a dry food diet before this so it was a nightmare trying to find something he'd eat. We just kept trying different things until we found something he liked for a while - Battersea did quite well out of us! He'd also had a broken jaw which had to be wired to complicate things.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 05/01/2019 13:18

Harry still has a snuggly belly and claws.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 05/01/2019 18:35

I'm so glad I saw this thread. Our cat had four teeth removed just before Christmas because he was dribbling quite badly and they found (what we now know is) a cancerous lump under his tongue. I'm heartbroken as we lost his brother earlier in the year (also not long after dental treatment. Coincidence I'm sure Hmm).

He's been a very fussy eater for a while but was eating okay at first but in the last few days seems to have forgotten how to eat properly. Last night I resorted to cooking some coley and blending it. He ate/licked it in one go. Poor baby was so hungry. Repeated it this morning and he seems almost scared of it! All he's had today is some melted butter which can't be good. I will try the cat soup though - can you get it in any supermarkets?

He loves the smell of chicken stock cubes - is there any strong smelling food anyone could recommend?

DontCallMeCharlotte · 05/01/2019 18:37

Oh and the dribbling is worse but that's possibly down to the cancer. And I wonder if it's affected his tastebuds?

Effendi · 05/01/2019 18:46

We've had a few toothless cats over the years.
At the mo we have one with 6 teeth and another with only 2.
They manage fine with wet and dry food. Just seem to gum it.

Justonedayatatime11 · 05/01/2019 23:42

DontCall I picked mine up from pets at home. She's having no trouble with that but still not up to the pate type food

OP posts:
Ollivander84 · 06/01/2019 00:02

@DontCallMeCharlotte get the cat soup, blast in microwave for a few seconds and stirring very well
