Adopting a feline friend- North London

We have decided we are going to adopt a cat! Just looking for any advice or tips regarding adopting and good rescues to adopt from.

I always had pets including cats growing up and I now feel like a furry friend is missing from my life!

We both work full time and live in a quiet road in central London. Have a large shared garden and a catflap.

Have heard good things about the Mayhew, and we are also close to Cats Protection north london. Does anyone have any exoerience with these, and are there any other good rescues around this area?

How long is it recommended that you stay at home with the cat when first adopted- or is this recommended at all?

Any tips on choosing a cat to suit our family? although I understand it's more a case of being chosen by a cat

How was his first night op?

JollyGiraffe · 06/01/2019 11:11

All good here - a bit of meowing at first but settled down very quickly.

Picked his favourite spot at the top of the stairs already. He was very pleased to see us this morning!

Such a lovely boy Smile

He has chosen wisely. He'll have you wrapped round his paw in no time. Have you had a purr yet? :-)

JollyGiraffe · 06/01/2019 11:27

We've had lots of purring!

He is very friendly and affectionate (but will let you know when he's had enough!)

He seems to like being around people, he's spent the morning alternating between following me around and curled up in his spot.

I'm so happy Smile

Yay! Love a happy feline story. He has chosen his slaves wisely. Grin

JollyGiraffe · 06/01/2019 21:26

He seems fairly content Wink

Ah lovely Tiggy. He does look quite contented!

EachandEveryone · 07/01/2019 11:22

Aw he’s gorgeous!

barberousbarbara · 07/01/2019 13:31

He looks very settled and content. Such a handsome boy. Congratulations on your furbaby

ISaySteadyOn · 08/01/2019 10:45

He is beautiful.

Vinorosso74 · 11/01/2019 19:07

I just wondered how Tiggy is doing?

JollyGiraffe · 12/01/2019 09:03

He has settled in perfectly!

He follows me around purring Grin and has been jumping up on our laps for cuddles which I've been very surprised about as I didn't expect him to be a lap cat.

He's showing more of his playful side now too and has been racing around like a kitten! He's a big boy though so not the most agile Wink

We are so happy we got him, and he seems very happy too Smile

Trying to post some pics but my phone is being very temperamental!

That's fantastic! He is quite a chunky lad so perhaps playing will help keep him in shape. I think he is one of the most playful older cats I've seen in the centre.

Vinorosso74 · 12/01/2019 10:57

Oh bless he's tired himself out!

JollyGiraffe · 12/01/2019 11:02

He really loves his food and was inhaling his dinner so we got him a ball puzzle, which he worked out very quickly and keeps him occupied. He's a clever boy!

He's currently sitting on my lap kneading and purring away. I've got things I need to do but looks like I'm stuck here for now!

I think he had a puzzle feeder in the centre. Our lad inhales his dry food too! Am being strict on food intake as he's still young but would eat more if he could.
It sounds like Tiggy has landed on his paws. Just goes to show there is a home out there for all cats.

JollyGiraffe · 12/01/2019 11:28

Yes he did and they recommended we get him one. It also means he doesn't eat everything in one go and saves some for later!

He'll be due at the vet in March so will ask about his weight then. The centre didnt seem to concerned about it so I'm not sure if he's just a big cat!

I think he's just big boned Smile. Most vets will do free weight checks as and when needed. At our vets the nurses do this and they are really good for advice too.

Toddlerteaplease · 12/01/2019 13:12

He's just gorgeous. This thread has made me all gooey!

JollyGiraffe · 12/01/2019 13:36

He's very handsome Smile

Still can't believe he couldn't find a home for so long!
