Good quality wet food-

That won't cause us to need to sell a kidney Confused
DCat has finally achieved his life's ambition and been given veterinary advice that he has to eat wet food from now on. Previously he's been on Canagan dry food with a small pouch of wet food in the evening with his pills and potions secreted in it.
He's something of a connoisseur, prefers fish flavours and is also a shade over 5 kilos- a cursory inspection of the cat food aisle in Waitrose yesterday indicated we could be looking at between £3 and £4 a day to indulge his discerning palate, and I'm not even sure if that's a particularly good quality food IYSWIM?

Marking my place,

My cats are on Felix (previous cats lived to 18/19 on Felix) but I'm sure there must be something better.

weleasewoderick22 · 07/12/2018 08:01

Marking too.

I've tried Encore but it's too pricey with 4 cats. We're currently on whiskas but it never seems to fill them up even though they have dry food too. I give them cheap white fish from Lidl 2-3 times a week.

dementedpixie · 07/12/2018 08:05

Pets at home might have a better selection. Or have a look on zooplus

clayspaniel · 07/12/2018 08:06

Gourmet Perle in gravy without vegetables

fuzzywuzzy · 07/12/2018 08:10

Ours are on applaws, and are the worlds pickiest cats, won’t eat anything else. They do also eat royal canin dry food which is always out for them.

DP accidentally bought chicken applaws and they refused it, they only eat the fish variety. So we gave them to MIL for her cat & now he turns his nose up at alternatives too😆

chickhonhoneybabe · 07/12/2018 08:15

Sainsbury’s do a fish one called delicious recipes (in a black box) 12 packets for £6.50.

Hi-life is also another brand and they do a fish one too, but the packets are smaller and it’s usually around £4-4.50 for 10 packets.

Dchickcat is a posh cat and will only eat these (or thrive which is mega expensive) due to the high fish content, otherwise she’ll only eat fresh chicken, prawns or tuna... she curls her nose up at the meat versions but goes mad at the fish ones. 🐟 🐠

chickhonhoneybabe · 07/12/2018 08:18

I’ve looked everywhere for good quality cat food and the ones I’ve mentioned above are the best I’ve found. Sainsbury’s def looks better than the hi-life one even though it has the same fish content

Largepiecesofcrookedwood · 07/12/2018 08:53

I'm quite shocked by the cost TBH. His Canagan is shockingly expensive so I suppose I can offset that cost somewhat and hide the receipts from DH

Also I sometimes buy fresh pet from Tesco which are chunks of fresh cat food and mix it with half a packet of the Sainsbury’s or hi-life wet food.

Think you can also buy it from Ocado and Asda. The smaller bag is under £5 and you keep it in the fridge.

This is the Sainsbury’s one

And hi-life (its 8 packers around £4)

Thrive is also good but pricey £6 x 6 tins

Ollivander84 · 07/12/2018 10:01

Zooplus often has good offers, filter by grain free and use Quidco for cashback

Sausagefingers9 · 07/12/2018 10:06

Thrive is the best but v £££. Watch out for applaws, it’s good but only complementary so it’s no good with biscuits.
I’ve just tried my fussy boy with the Sainsbury’s one mentioned and he is a fan! Or he will be until I go out and buy 3 boxes, then he’ll decide he hates it!

Does he have to be on wet food completely? It would work out cheaper to feed 1 packet of wet and top up with a good quality biscuit.

chickhonhoneybabe · 07/12/2018 10:09

Op when looking at grain free ect make sure it’s not a complementary cat food such as applaws unless you’re still giving him dry food as well as it doesn’t have the right nutrients in it.

chickhonhoneybabe · 07/12/2018 10:11

My posh cat won’t eat biscuits or normal cat food so I completely sympathise, honestly give Sainsbury’s a go then try the fresh pet mixed in with it once they get used to it.

viccat · 07/12/2018 11:23

ZooPlus is definitely a good place to look, many of the European brands are grain free and very affordable compared to Thrive etc.

Animonda Carny for example is a good option. Cosma in the tuna flavour, in the larger cans, is also a good price (but some of the other Cosma flavours are not complete so can't be given all the time as the only food).

wombatron · 07/12/2018 11:25

Not had the Cat, but I've used the Natures Valley (on fetch.com) and Lily's Kitchen for the dogs and it's been the best yet for them. Good quality ingredients seemingly. They do a cat version of them also. I find the cans more economical than the pouches :) hope that's a bit helpful.

Largepiecesofcrookedwood · 07/12/2018 12:22

Thanks all, he's on Metacam permanently so the wet food is to keep his kidneys in the best shape possible.
I think tins will be more economical so will do some further investigation

My 2 don't like pate style foods so that rules out a lot of the 'good' ones. They like gourmet solitaire beef or duck in tomato sauce. I have tried a few different types of food from zooplus so the sspca basket at Tesco has had a top up every so often!

blackcat86 · 07/12/2018 12:56

My cat is really fussy but loves sheba. Preferably the fish, chicken or beef in gravy.

QueenOfIce · 07/12/2018 13:18

We have the Applaws complete in tins and the meowing heads. Our cats cost more per meal than dh and I! Zooplus gives discounts now and then and they have some Christmas deals on Cosma at the moment.

FrankieChips · 07/12/2018 13:21

My cat has Canagan but it’s expensive and recently it’s been giving her the runs (she’s very sensitive). She’s now on Country Hunter which is cheaper but sometimes makes her sick (never met a cat with so many tummy problems).

PetuliaBlavatsky · 07/12/2018 13:21

My cats have always loved Sheba (in jelly not gravy) but now seem to have gone off it so I'm also on the hunt for a replacement. Bloody fussy cats overlords

WardrobeDoor · 07/12/2018 13:21

Ours likes Thrive and Encore. He used to eat a Hilife variety but annoyingly they don’t stock it in Tescos any more.

Alfie190 · 07/12/2018 18:52

My cat mainly eats dry food, he doesn't like variety but he does like a pouch of Sheba.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 07/12/2018 19:05

Harry has Country Hunter, but only the goose flavour. We tried him on Thrive but he wasn't interested despite not being able to get enough of the treats.
