Good quality wet food-

That won't cause us to need to sell a kidney Confused
DCat has finally achieved his life's ambition and been given veterinary advice that he has to eat wet food from now on. Previously he's been on Canagan dry food with a small pouch of wet food in the evening with his pills and potions secreted in it.
He's something of a connoisseur, prefers fish flavours and is also a shade over 5 kilos- a cursory inspection of the cat food aisle in Waitrose yesterday indicated we could be looking at between £3 and £4 a day to indulge his discerning palate, and I'm not even sure if that's a particularly good quality food IYSWIM?

Don't know if this is practical for you but we 'make' all our cat food. But frozen white fish and salmon fillets and whole cheap chickens from Lidl and boil everything. Obv not feeding them chicken bones. Just boil the bees us out of them and pull the meat of. All goes into tupperware and into the freezer. Surprisingly cheap and they love it - especially the fish.

minkies11 · 07/12/2018 19:12

Sorry - fat finger typing/ useless autocorrect again. Bees us is bejesus sorry!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 07/12/2018 19:12

Don't you have to add taurine if you make your own food? Not that I've ever considered it, but I seem to remember reading that human food doesn't have the right nutrients.

dementedpixie · 07/12/2018 19:14

Don't they need more than just cooked meats to get all the nutrients they require?

AnnaMagnani · 07/12/2018 19:16

Zooplus.

My not kittens any more have Animonda Carny. Don't need much as it is sooo meaty. Disappears in seconds.

minkies11 · 07/12/2018 19:21

They do have taurine supplement but we also mince up chicken wings and thighs -bones included and hearts and livers yuk - all raw. The odd rabbit or squirrel they usually source themselves.

BuffaloCauliflower · 07/12/2018 19:21

My two are on Thrive, but alternated with Hills dry. I don’t think it’s THAT expensive - 6 for about £5.75 on ocado

BuffaloCauliflower · 07/12/2018 19:22

Just meat even boiled on the bone isn’t the right nutrition for cats. They need taurine only found in the organs and bones of an animal. Please don’t feed your cats just muscle meat.

SciFiScream · 07/12/2018 19:22

Pets at Home have a satisfaction guarantee so you can swap stuff if your cat doesn't like it. Even if you buy a multi pack - you can take back the unused food.
The person at the till also taught me that for cats it's all about the smell...so with dry food warm it up for 3/5 seconds in the microwave and with wet food add a tiny bit of boiling water from kettle as the smell will improve when the meals are warm.

longtompot · 07/12/2018 19:54

Our cat is the same! I am currently trialling him with various wet foods as he seems to LOVE one for a packet or two and then turns his nose up. He is currently really liking the Perle Gourmet which comes in various flavours. He did like Felix as good as it looks but started to struggle with the 'meat' pieces.
Another one he loved but I have yet to find it in my local shops is Thrive wet food. It smells just like chicken in gravy.

theSnuffster · 08/12/2018 09:22

I'm thinking of ordering animonda carny for our kittens (10 weeks old.) They're currently eating sainsburys as its grain free but the meat content isn't high enough IMO. I just have to hope that they'll like it- with postage from zoo plus it's going to work out pretty pricey to buy just to trial it.

Largepiecesofcrookedwood · 08/12/2018 10:35

I've got some Country Hunter so will see how he goes. There was no fish option but hopefully he'll lower his standards for 90p a pop
Hmm

We order all our food from Zooplus and we get Bozita, which is 100% grain free and over 90% meat and is a complete cat food. It's really reasonably priced as well and lots of different flavours. I would recommend!

Sausagefingers9 · 08/12/2018 10:41

@minkies11 that doesn’t sound great for your cats. Why not try feeding raw instead? Cats don’t need their food boiling, think about how they would eat in the wild. They need more than meat fillets though. If you are on fb then have a look at the cat completely raw and proud ( cat CRAP) page.

snuffster I’ve got a couple of tins of the adult animonda carny I’d be happy to post to you to try. Mine won’t even sniff it!

theSnuffster · 08/12/2018 10:45

Sausage fingers thanks so much that's really kind of you! I'd be a bit worried though as they're so young and one of them already had some tummy troubles, so I think she must be extra sensitive. Would the adult food be okay, do you think? I've read that it's not all that different from kitten food anyway just small bits so easier for them to chew.... But no idea how true that is!

theSnuffster · 08/12/2018 10:46

Sorry don't know how to tag!

dementedpixie · 08/12/2018 10:48

You do @ right before the user name @theSnuffster

minkies11 · 08/12/2018 11:17

Sausagefingers - have checked my cats diet out with both my vet and breeder - it's fine. Sorry if not clear but mine are fed mostly raw diet - the chicken wings/thighs and hearts and liver are all raw and mixed with raw beef or lamb. We do boil chickens then make a broth from the bones as a change from their raw stuff. Then the salmon and pollack is steamed. They have taurine supplement and have dry food as an option. They get their bone content and fresh raw food and some nice cooked chicken in jelly with a fish option! We tried feeding them branded raw food but they didn't like it and it was so expensive - it's a bit of a faff doing it from scratch but DH is a chef so he sourced a good meat mincer and it works well. Currently have 2 large healthy cats weighing in about 6kgs each and full of beans!

Largepiecesofcrookedwood · 08/12/2018 12:07

It would appear that Dcat's discerning palate can accommodate goose Grin

It’s up to you if you’d like to try it, I don’t mind sending it Smile kitten food is a fairly new invention but I can understand if you are wary due to tummy issues

Therewere5inthebed · 11/12/2018 12:11

All of mine are on Zoolove wet food from Zooplus, The cats will even eat the dog food when I’m feeding them all. It smells like proper food and is great quality with the added advantage of 10% of every purchase going to charity.
