What dry food will your cat eat?

Our new cat (aged 3 rescue cat) absolutely loves Felix pouches but I've always thought the posh dry stuff is probably 'better' overall or a mixture of this with pouches?? I got a huge bag of wainwrights which the cat point blank refuses to eat even mixed in with her Felix ...I'll keep giving the dry and obv the pouches of Felix but I hope / imagine she'll eventually eat some dry but is there any that's particularly popular ?
Also these dreamies- how often and how many do you give ? Are they the cat equivalent of sweets ?

Mine eat thrive/ encore/ purizon dry. Encore out the supermarket and the other 2 from zooplus. Think the dreamies day up to 20 per day but mine don't get that amount and not every day. They also like webbox sticks

pumpkinpie5 · 24/09/2018 21:15

Mine like purine one (from supermarket ) or James wellbeloved- I really notice a difference in their condition when I give them this. Not many cays I know will eat wainwrights- and I work for a rescue so see a lot of cats!

Vinorosso74 · 24/09/2018 21:19

Ours has Thrive (anyone been able to get this anywhere recently ???). He's also liked Lilly's Kitchen. When you change food it's best to do it gradually so they get used to the new and reduces chance of upset stomach.

ChishandFips33 · 24/09/2018 21:21

Lily's kitchen - all flavours

dementedpixie · 24/09/2018 21:21

I got my last thrive dry food from amazon

ClaudiaNaughton · 24/09/2018 21:24

Cat loves Royal Canin. She gets 5 Dreamies in morning and 5 in evening (unless she forgets)

incendio · 24/09/2018 21:24

My girl is obsessed with the Lily's kitchen one and she also like the applaws one!

My girl is a kitten and it says on the pack of the Lily's kitchen one that a kittens diet should be mainly made up of wet food (not sure if this is the same for adult cats) so I've been feeding her two pouches of wet and a bowl of dry a day.

viccat · 24/09/2018 21:27

Mine would eat pretty much anything but I get them Arden Grange Sensitive dry currently, as it's grain free. In regards to Dreamies, yes they are pretty much like sweets for cats. Natural treats are much better - for example the ones that are pure freeze dried fish or chicken like Thrive, and treats shouldn't be a daily thing really...

Twillow · 24/09/2018 21:49

Fussy cat, was always turning his nose up or throwing up...Purina sensitive, wolfs it and no more yukky surprises on the carpet!

smurfy2015 · 24/09/2018 21:50

@ClaudiaNaughton - fess up, do you or forget or does she really forget? My puddy tat would never let me forget a potential treat time. I fell asleep one night before she got her treats, she woke me every hour till I handed them over. Cat bum reversing into your face will wake you up, trust me on that.

OP - she eats Purina One as dry and for wet Gourmet mon petit (monday to friday) and Gourmet crystal soup at weekends

She loves all treats she gets own brand ones from Tesco / Asda and occassionally gets the dental bites mixed in with a couple of treats, it helps take any tarter off her teeth and absolute favourite is Catnip treats from Sainsburys

dementedpixie · 24/09/2018 21:50

Cosma snackies are a cheaper version of thrive freeze dried treats. I get them from zooplus

Twillow · 24/09/2018 21:51

Wet food also was a waste of time, brief phase of eating Sheba but only one flavour, now I stick to the Purina and thrown down bits of raw chicken or mince when I'm cooking!

GoodHeavensNoImAChicken · 24/09/2018 21:53

Ours eats James wellbeloved, we mix up her flavours and she eats them all

Vinorosso74 · 24/09/2018 22:47

Thanks demented. I usually get it from Zooplus but they appear to not have it anymore. Just seen Sainsburys sell it but I've never seen it in any I've been in.

Rockbird · 25/09/2018 01:19

It's so hard to know what to give them. My two are on Felix AGAIL kitten pouches and Royal Canin kitten biscuits. I want to change them but don't know what to, just grain free. Am not changing anything for a while yet though, will wait till they're well settled first.

ClaudiaNaughton · 25/09/2018 21:12

Well smurfy she only forgets in the evening if she’s out mouse hunting. She is extremely successful at that.

CoffeeShortbread · 25/09/2018 21:15

Royal Canin anti hairball (mixed fed with wet pouches) as he is long haired.

CoffeeShortbread · 25/09/2018 21:22

(I don’t feed mine dreamies)

CompletelyUnknown · 25/09/2018 21:23

My cat eats iams and never forgets her morning or evening treat. She sits under the treat cupboard starting into my soul until I provide her with her beloved dreamies!

smurfy2015 · 26/09/2018 20:27

@ClaudiaNaughton I had to put a bell around the neck of my killing machine as I came into the house one day that I had been out for a couple of hours and she had "helpfully" left me 2 1/2 dead birds in the hallway.

So apart from the bell she has a curfew of 7 pm but is usually well tucked in at that stage, waiting for her supper and treat time.

Then she gets into her igloo on top of a pillow, (she isn't spoiled or anything). At this exact moment, she is flopped out the bedroom floor after some catnip

sugarcoatedthorns · 26/09/2018 21:10

I (DCat) only recently discoveres Lilly's kitchen. It's 70% meat/fish so got my seal of approval for value & quality, altho actually not in that order. That and fresh food, normally raw chicken wings, carcass, and lumps of raw meat off the lamb joint before cooking. DCat is voracious eater, and doesn't understand fussiness around food, will even bite my finger when I offer food, or grab with claws in haste to get food in mouth. All my animals are this way I'm doing it wrong aren't I

sugarcoatedthorns · 26/09/2018 21:11

..umm, also obsessed with dreamies currently in addict prog

FourteenCows · 26/09/2018 21:14

It took me 2 months to get my girl to eat a bit of dry! I started added a couple each day to her wet, gradually increasing. She loves James wellbeloved turkey flavour, it’s really easy on the stomach as well

catlady3 · 26/09/2018 21:25

Mine are pretty addicted to Royal Canin. They still get the second age kitten one at the moment, but they also really like the oral care one. Especially the little one that's teething. Before they got hooked on this they enjoyed Lilly's Kitchen. If you want a decent brand at lower cost I'd recommend Smilla off the Zooplus website. Meowing Heads is also high quality.

If you do give wet food (and your car will probably love that), something with high protein content is important. The stuff you get at the supermarket isn't particularly good for them and you can get much better quality at the same or better price elsewhere, especially if you can buy in bulk. A complete food will be better for them than a complementary food (will say on the packet).

Treats, I think dreamies is something like 8 a day max? They shouldn't have loads, partly because it's not as nutritious as they need it to be for the calories.

Lynne1Cat · 26/09/2018 21:32

I've had several cats, spanning over 38 years, and they've all been difficult with their food, so I've tried loads of things.

My current cat (14yrs)has Felix pouches, which only contains about 4% meat! So he has Iams or Purina dry food, which he loves, and it is available to him 24/7. I feed it in a separate dish to the wet stuff, which he has 3 times a day (1 pouch each time)
