What dry food will your cat eat?

Thirtyrock39 · 24/09/2018 21:09

Our new cat (aged 3 rescue cat) absolutely loves Felix pouches but I've always thought the posh dry stuff is probably 'better' overall or a mixture of this with pouches?? I got a huge bag of wainwrights which the cat point blank refuses to eat even mixed in with her Felix ...I'll keep giving the dry and obv the pouches of Felix but I hope / imagine she'll eventually eat some dry but is there any that's particularly popular ?
Also these dreamies- how often and how many do you give ? Are they the cat equivalent of sweets ?

Mine doesn't have Dreamies or any of those treats. His treat is tinned tuna (in water or oil, never brine) once a week, and freshly-poached chicken, twice a week

dementedpixie · 26/09/2018 21:37

Felix doesn't only have 4% meat. The meat content will be higher but will be meat and animal derivatives rather than a specific named meat e.g. chicken, beef, etc

TheGonnagle · 26/09/2018 21:39

Canegan. Bloody expensive but has cleaned up his dodgy gut and he is now in excellent(if still tubby) condition.

StripySocksAndDocs · 26/09/2018 21:43

James Welbeloved. He seems quite happy with it. Eats either turkey or fish ones.

Meet0nTheIedge · 26/09/2018 21:45

Canagan here too, the chicken one, they both love it. They have a Felix pouch a day each plus a scoop of Canagan.

badgerread · 26/09/2018 21:47

James Wellbeloved Fish Light - he is a lardarse so currently on a diet...

MrsRubyMonday · 26/09/2018 21:49

James Wellbeloved grain free at the moment, although we switch between that and the Arden Grange grain free depending on what's cheaper. So much healthier since we went grain free, almost no vomiting or hairballs and less poo (and less smell!) We don't feed wet food, they just waste it.

mrscee · 26/09/2018 21:56

My cat eats perfect fit they sell it in, tesco and sainsburys

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 26/09/2018 22:03

we buy Sainsbury's Hypoallergenic. It's 60% chicken and grain free, but much better priced than similar branded food, and both cats seem to enjoy it. For wet they have a spot of Whiskas. I know it's shite, but they mostly eat dry so I'm not excessively bothered.

EachandEveryone · 26/09/2018 22:09

Meowing Heads at the moment. I bought it whilst waiting for Zooplus. Really expensive and they aren’t overly keen. Their favourite is Puritzon although I’ve ordered Arden Grange as it’s only £9.99 for four kgs at the moment. They have half a ton of savoury cake twice a day. They are totally addicted to them. Or half a packet of Felix twice a day. I can’t imagine them eating a full sachet of anything. They are chunky to be polite.

Lily's kitchen comes in a compostable bag! So there [thumbs nose at other brands in plastic bags!] Wink

QuestionableMouse · 27/09/2018 22:20

Mine will only eat Purina one kitten.

She's extremely picky though to the point of refusing even brands like Lilly's kitchen !

Beaverhausen · 27/09/2018 22:22

I buy purizon for mine and they love it. It has 70% protein and no grain or rice. I order mine from zooplus which costs me £34 for a 6.5kg bag.

If you are looking to buy decent food but at a reasonable price look at zooplus.

Toddlerteaplease · 27/09/2018 22:28

Mine love Royal Canin person but it makes cheddar sick, so went back to aromatic exigent as that's what the rescue gave her. Unfortunately it makes her poo smell horrific. Currently trying on a mix of Royal Canin sensible and aiming to wean on to James well beloved house cat.

susurration · 27/09/2018 22:29

Until recently the only dry biscuit she would eat was purina pro plan. Point blank refused whiskers, go-cat and even purina one. She now has a special diet and the vet said he thinks she was refusing other dry foods because it gave her stomach ache.

I've heard good things about applaws. That was going to be the next thing we tried.

28282ooooh · 27/09/2018 22:32

Royal Canin

She isnt keen on wet food. Sometimes will tolerate a gravy pouch, wont touch pate or jelly.

MargotLovedTom1 · 27/09/2018 22:37

James Wellbeloved turkey (and half a Felix pouch morning and teatime). She's a petite cat and not greedy. Poos are firm, she's never sick and her coat is so sleek and shiny. Dreamies now and again and the odd Lick e Lix (which she LOVES).

ifonly4 · 28/09/2018 16:58

I've got two five month old kitties, they're currently still eating what they came to me on, Purina One. I do have some Purina Opistart and Royal Canin kitten lined up for them to try. Longterm though, I'll be looking at something grain free I think.

Toddlerteaplease · 29/09/2018 10:38

Cheddar has been having James wellbeloved since Friday, mixed with sensible food. She was sick this morning. Should I persevere or give up on it. Her poo is very sticky.

sugarcoatedthorns · 29/09/2018 16:32

toddlertea I would go back to something very blad and simple for DCat until tummy settles down and poo back to normal, then introduce one thing at a time.

If you are feeding a 'complete' food, then you shouldn't be feeding it with other food or you run the risk of giving over the rda of any of its ingredients.

Boil some chicken with bones, then use the liquid to boil some rice, mix boned chicken with rice until stools normal and sick stopped.

sugarcoatedthorns · 29/09/2018 17:02

*bland not blad!

fenneltea · 29/09/2018 18:41

Purina pro plan and One is all my lot will eat without reactions or going off it; they also get sachets of Felix AGAIL and whiskas, with the occasionaltin of butchers classic.
I've tried lots of the expensive high meat content foods but my six have never really taken to it. My last cat lived until a ripe old age in good health on this diet though, so not too worried.

IHaveBrilloHair · 29/09/2018 18:43

The only dry food mine will eat is the Whiskas with chicken pockets, fussy wee shites.
They eat any wet food though.

sweetkitty · 29/09/2018 18:46

My kittens are on a mixture of Lily’s Kitchn and Millie’s Lionheart (both high meat grain free) they were on the meat tubs but were eating a few bites then leaving the rest they much prefer dry although I wanted them on a mixture.

maggienolia · 30/09/2018 21:13

Royal Canin for fussy cats is all Cat3 will eat. She won't touch Dreamies - weird creature.
