How different are Siamese?

Just wanted to ask any Siamese slaves out there, just how different are they as a breed to regular lovely moggies?

I am potentially getting two male siamese 13 week old kittens - I’ve had various moggies ( some neurotic some not) but never a Siamese, although I’ve known a few so have a little understanding.

I have two DS (4 and 7 but used to cats) if that makes a difference!

Any insight into what I’d be letting myself into would be great😉

Can you hold and check the temperament of the kittens? I’ve had Siamese all my life. The ones that don’t like to be held don’t seem to change. They also are more likely to be hyper and bite. You want affectionate kittens for children. Good luck.

Thank- you, that’s very helpful advice - I haven’t tried to check their temperature but I can definitely hold them. They are quite cuddly kittens - so hopefully that is a good sign.

I’d agree re cats and the kids - I’d initially been hoping to find a slightly older pair of cats ( not necessarily Siamese!) but it has proved surprisingly challenging. These two have fallen into my path and I must admit I’ve rather fallen in love with them.

I had an oriental female, she was a rescue, not a lap cat, loud and followed us around, she loved to go for walks, sit in the sun and chase creatures. She had teeth problems which the vet said was quite common in orientals and Siamese due to the narrow shape of their mouths. Have you you tubed the 2 siamese waiting for their owner in the showerGrin

Ilovecrumpets · 31/08/2018 17:06

Blush sorry misread temperament as temperature! Grin

If that doesn't put you off you'll be fine!

Ilovecrumpets · 31/08/2018 17:09

Just watched the YouTube. Kind of like my kids when I shower!!

Although I am now a little worried as my boys both have REALLY loud voices.

Maybe that’s what’s attracting me to the Siamese boy kittens - a sense of familiarity Grin

I have an Asian/Burmese cross - she’s very affectionate to her humans loves her cuddles when she chooses and is currently annoyed as she was left with DH for 3 days so her family unit wasn’t complete. She was very vocal about this DH said!

She was prone to cystitis when younger which is common apparently in orientals and has now got kidney failure, but is 17 so doing well.

Good luck with the kittens (please post photos!)

Hmm - I guess one problem might be that my kids go to the ex e/o weekend. I hope the cats wouldn’t be too upset.

Actually one of the reasons I’m thinking about this is my eldest DS is really struggling atm. We’ve seen these kittens quite a few times for various reasons and one-off the little boy kittens seems very, very drawn to my DS and him to that kitten. I grew up with lots of animals so I suppose I’m hoping this little kitten might help him.

I don’t have a Siamese but I have two kittens that have similar personality traits. They are great fun, very needy when they want to be, quite hyper but also snuggly. I would imagine if you have them from young, they’ll become great companions for your children Smile

hendricksy · 31/08/2018 17:49

I grew up with loads of Siamese , the boys( castrated) were always lovely . The girls were always more highly strung and very loyal to one person .

MyShinyThing · 31/08/2018 17:50

All I'm going to say is, make sure you have very good pet insurance! Preferably one that covers dental.

And if they're anything like mine, kiss goodbye to your personal space. I'm looking at you, toothless ShinyCat pressed up against my face!

MrsChollySawcutt · 31/08/2018 17:59

Ive had Siamese all my life. They are naughty but extremely loveable rogues. I'd never be without at least one in my life. Currently have 1 Siamese and 2 Orientals.

Temperaments do vary though - they are all individuals. I've had Siamese who were utterly cuddly with everyone, ones who are quite aloof and disdainful unless they decide they want to sit on you and one little madam who loved my DH above all else in the world and would sit between us pushing me way with her feet, claws out!

Without fail though they are loyal and very needy. Ours hate to be alone more than anything and and happiest when the whole family is home. We laugh that they count us all in at night before they can settle down.

I have a Siamese, he is very vocal, he was here pre DC and on the night they came back from hospital he sat on the stairs and shouted. He answers back if you tell him off for anything. He is very grumpy (savage) with adults he thinks are transgressing in some way and enjoys insisting people stroke him and then biting them when he has had enough. Strangely though he is the most tolerant cat I have ever seen with DC, he has never lifted a paw to any of them. My DC adore him, although they would also like another cat and he hates all other cats with a passion so they can't have one. When younger he would play fetch up and down the stairs and he walked well on a lead.

Ilovecrumpets · 31/08/2018 18:01

Thanks everyone

Yes to insurance! They are ‘traditional’ Siamese so not so extremely pointy.

I do love them.

They were so mean to Lady...

MrsChollySawcutt · 31/08/2018 18:04

Yes either pet insurance or vet bill savings acct. Big Boy Siamese has a dental this year than set us back over £600.

pastaandpestoagain · 31/08/2018 18:04

Oh, he is 12, not health problems to date they are usually healthy and long lived breed but he has had two teeth out.

Ilovecrumpets · 31/08/2018 18:04

I think you’ve all convinced me (not that I really need convincing ) that these are the cats for us!

I've had them all my life, I have two ( Orientals- same as Siamese ) and am about to get another two, I find them excellent with children, my five year old and nine year old won't be separated from them at night.

We have a boy and a girl at the moment who are half siblings I wouldn't be without them, Coco plays fetch with her toy mouse she's a rare oriental with blue eyes called a Seychellois I can't recommend them highly enough OP Smile

Asaha, that made me smile as, in all seriousness, I really didn’t like them as a breed because of that film!

NorthernGirl1991 · 31/08/2018 18:27

They’re amazing! We have two and any future cats I ever get will be Siamese. They’re a bit full-on-cuddly, but so loving and intelligent Grin

rosieposey · 31/08/2018 18:29

You can get more traditional shaped Siamese with less extreme ears Wink

That photo is of them tucked up in bed next to me, they are so affectionate.
