How different are Siamese?

Ilovecrumpets · 31/08/2018 16:30

Just wanted to ask any Siamese slaves out there, just how different are they as a breed to regular lovely moggies?

I am potentially getting two male siamese 13 week old kittens - I’ve had various moggies ( some neurotic some not) but never a Siamese, although I’ve known a few so have a little understanding.

I have two DS (4 and 7 but used to cats) if that makes a difference!

Any insight into what I’d be letting myself into would be great😉

I love Siamese kitties but they are so LOUD! My boy is quarter Siamese and he definitely shares the trait of being very vocal.

babysharkdoodoodoodoodoodoo · 31/08/2018 19:17

I have a Siamese and he seems more dog than cat, he plays fetch and comes when called, he loves cuddles and he's my 2 year olds best friend and is very tolerant, he's happy to be carried around and doesn't mind a bit of rough and tumble. He's not very vocal but will have needy days when he does meow and whinge for no reason. Only thing is he's a bit of a sicky cat, I've had him about 10 months and I'm still trying to find a food that agrees with him. But I would definitely 100% a Siamese if you want an affectionate clingy cat.

I’ve had Siamese cats all my life (6 in total, 2 currently) and have completely adored them all. They’ve all been bursting with personality and very affectionate and loyal - the one I had as a child was my constant sidekick and best friend, and still people are often amused at the shoal of Siamese cats that follow me all around the house. All mine that have experienced children have been wonderful with them. My childhood cat slept in my dolls house and was happy to be pushed around in a pram, the one I had as a teenager used to follow me to school, and my current ones love watching over our baby and toddler like little watchdogs. Definitely sounds like a nice thing for your DS - my first was the absolute light of my life as a child, especially when I was struggling with something.

I’ve heard the typical Siamese personality described as more dog than cat, and that’s certainly my experience. They’re extremely intelligent and want to be part of everything. I’ve had a couple that learnt to do tricks and some that played fetch (obviously on their terms, they’re still cats after all). Mine haven’t been the sort to be off doing their own thing like a lot of cats - they’re always very present whether you like it or not.

Oh yes, and incredibly LOUD! And you get to hear that loud voice A LOT because they tend to be extremely chatty!

However, I would say imagine living with the cats on Lady and the Tramp. That’s the most accurate portrayal of my pairs of Siamese cats I’ve seen. The intelligence and sociability can help make them extra naughty, and they do tend to work together on their bad deeds. Bonus points for how they manipulate their owner into blaming the poor dog, which would definitely happen! As I speak one of them is trying to steal peas and the other is supervising - sigh. That only shows that side though - a few people have told me they didn’t like Siamese cats after Lady and the Tramp but loved mine once they got over that!

I’m really glad to hear some people have had elderly siameses. Sadly I haven’t yet had one live past 12 (all due to illness rather than accidents) but sounds like that’s maybe just unfortunate. As with others though, most of mine have needed dental work.

I’m very happy to hear you seem to have already decided. I won’t say you won’t occasionally regret it, but I can’t imagine I’ll ever not have at least two Siameses or orientals because they are wonderful and very addictive.

What are they like allergy wise?

Ilovecrumpets · 31/08/2018 19:53

Thank you everyone for your stories and pics of your lovely Siamese

Catsandcats · 31/08/2018 20:35

@stubble Personally I find Siamese cats less of a problem than other cats allergy-wise but may just be that I'm used to them. They do have finer, silkier fur than many cats though and less of it. Balinese are supposed to be good for allergies and they're very similar to Siamese.

LIVIA999 · 31/08/2018 20:45

Random question - if you have Siamese cats do you let them go outside? I have two cats who go in and out all day but I wondered with pedigrees if people do?

Ilovecrumpets · 02/10/2018 14:50

Thank you again to everyone who replied to my message. I didn’t end up getting the two boys but it did convince me I needed a Siamese in my life. So today my lovely new boy joined us. Haven’t got a name yet. I’m in love Grin. He seems pretty confident - came out his carrier straight away and then went back in for a snooze.

I have a lovely Bengal blue eyed snow marble and I think he would have a similar personality to orientals. He loves children and I have 6 kids. He's 9 now and I have been thinking about another bread to suit his out there curious in your face personality. I looked into a Maine coon but the breaker said she wouldn't sell one to anyone that had a Bengal in their home I have wondered Siamese or Bernese maybe might be wrong or another Bengal?

YetAnotherSpartacus · 02/10/2018 15:19

Gorgeous! More photos when he emerges from his little den please!

Ilovecrumpets · 02/10/2018 15:24

Will do @YetAnotherSpartacus . Obviously I’m biased but he is indeed gorgeous and handsome. His mum is a Thai Siamese so he has that old fashioned look.

I also have a little rescue Burmese kitten joining me in 2 weeks. Hopefully they will settle together OK.

Ohh he is scrumptious. Enjoy being owned!

MsHomeSlice · 02/10/2018 16:24

i am going to have a siamese, I have loved them since the Blue Peter one and my mother's hairdresser had one who had kittens...for some reason I was CONVINCED i was going to be given one of those kittens, and I was not!

I am going to have one and call him Monkey...and I shall shout it out loud like in that terrible eighties japansese/chinese children's tv series

Mun-keeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh!!

Ilovecrumpets · 02/10/2018 16:28

Ha @MsHomeSlice that was me. I’ve had a rubbish year (ex h left amongst other things) and I thought, that’s it I’m finally doing it and getting the Siamese I’ve always wanted ( my other life long ambition is a horse - but that will have to wait a bit longer 😉).

Oh he is lovely enjoy.

Thecatisboss · 02/10/2018 19:18

He’s gorgeous. I love the superior expression - he knows he’ll soon have you under the paw.

Thirtyrock39 · 02/10/2018 20:23

My grandparents had a beautiful Siamese cat though she was definitely not a softie . Seeing the pictures of the beige with black faces and ears really reminds me of her. The only time I ever saw my grandad cry was the day she died ...she meant the world to him

ApollO88 · 02/10/2018 20:58

My DH the selfish bastard is allergic to Cats! My DS adores cats and once asked me "when daddy dies, can we have a cat mummy?" - yes! My darling boy! When daddy does we will fill the house with ALL the cats!
So on a serious note..... are they at all hypoallergenic?!

Ilovecrumpets · 02/10/2018 21:43

@Thecatisboss there is no soon about it - I most definitely already amGrin

He’s eaten some fish and been out and about exploring all evening so all going well so far. Oh yes and he is talking to me. A lot already!

@Apool088 I got my boy because he had been returned due an allergic reaction so I’m guessing not totally! I think it probably depends on how allergic your DH is

fishhavefeelingstoo · 02/10/2018 22:11

I have a Siamese. He's very different to my other cats, he knows what he wants and makes sure he gets it! He likes to sleep under the duvet between my knees and as a kitten slept in my arms in bed. He is definitely my cat, if I'm not home he'll grumpily sit on someone else but you can tell he's only tolerating them and stealing their body heat! He likes to be warm. He's not as vocal these days, but accompanies me to the bathroom and does shout repeatedly if I go in the shower! I love him to bits but he has cost me a fair bit in vets costs. He doesn't really go out but loves being in the garden with me.

Enjoying all the lovely photos on here ❤

Oh. My. Goodness. Ollie has a rival for wide-eyed adoring paragon of innocence stares. What an absolute sweetie.

Ilovecrumpets · 03/10/2018 11:32

Yes he definitely likes attention. I’m not sure anyone can rival Ollie’s saucer eyes!
