Stray Cat

Last week, a local stray somehow managed to get through our microchip catflap while we were out, and proceeded to eat our cat's dinner and then strolled into our lounge and sat himself on our sofa, all while our cat looked on in what I can only imagine was shock!

When I discovered him, he was under our bed, refusing to come out, but had obviously got some wounds on his face. After failing to tempt him out, I shut the door and left him in there overnight. The next morning, I managed to get him into a carrier and took him to the vets. They confirmed he was unneutered, unchipped, and that some of his wounds had turned into abscesses. I paid £100 for him to have an antibiotic injection and a checkup, and they suggested I release him with a paper collar on with my phone number in case he had an owner. Ideally he needs an op to sort out the abcesses, de-fleaing, worming, vacs, chip etc etc).

I released him in my garden and have been worrying about him ever since! He's visited us a few times since (although no more break-ins), and I understand a local lady has been feeding him for about a year.

My gut instinct is to catch him next time he comes over, take him to the vets, get him sorted, and try and gently introduce him to my cat and see how they get along. Has anyone had any luck doing this? My DH is not convinced and thinks it's unfair on our current cat (a rescue we got 6 months ago). If it didn't work out I would happily rehome him (the stray that is) - although that's probably easier said than done! Cats Protection have already confirmed they have a waiting list.

Is your cat also a tom??

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 01/05/2018 22:01

Would the local woman agree to keep feeding the cat and watch out for him if you can arrange for the microchipping and neutering. Some charities will catch and release healthy feral cats.

ireneadler101 · 01/05/2018 22:08

Yes I think she would - she's said she'd be happy to take him on but as far as I know, hasn't done anything about it yet and every time I see his little face against the cat flap door I feel terrible! Not sure if she would help with medical things either (on the basis that she's been feeding him for a year and hasn't attempted to take him to the vets despite open war wounds on his face...)

Yes, my cat is a neutered Tom - I was encouraged that they sat together in the same room without any fighting when the stray got in (I have a camera which captured it all while I was out) - but perhaps I'm just being naive?

I'm a cat lover however this is potentially going to cost a fortune to resolve. My cat had one abscess last year that took surgery and weeks of antibiotics to cure it. The vets bill was almost £1000. Thank goodness we were insured. If you can afford it then go for it. I think I may be inclined to catch him and take him to a rehoming centre.

ireneadler101 · 01/05/2018 22:10

Wow £1000! That is useful to know...

Aw but he's chosen you!
Pic?

9GreenBottles · 01/05/2018 22:18

In my experience, toms get on better together - however there could be a dominance issue that develops. We have introduced a friendly stray tom, and a nervous stray tom to another three cats with no major problems.

Here he is at the vets last week...

Oh what a sweetheart, he's gorgeous and so sad looking!

Glassofredandapackofcrisps · 01/05/2018 22:24

If they're not fighting great!

viccat · 01/05/2018 22:24

All charities have a waiting list, especially this time of year when kitten season has just started and somehow stray enquiries seem to peak at the same time... Try several charities and add him to their waiting lists, just in case it doesn't work out with your resident cat.

Are you in London by any chance? There is a scheme called C4 for free neutering for strays. I can tell you more if you are within the M25.

Aprilmightbemynewname · 01/05/2018 22:25

It's your calling op.
No way can you refuse that face a new life.

Glassofredandapackofcrisps · 01/05/2018 22:25

Toddlertea he's looks as tough as old boots to me!!!

Hellomumsne · 01/05/2018 22:26

Oh my gosh, he's so sweet!

ireneadler101 · 01/05/2018 22:27

We're just inside the M25 but not technically in London. Free neutering would be great if available!

He is a handsome boy. My cat came from rescue and was previously a stray tom. He is our fur baby.
Could you get a quote from the vet to 'resolve all his issues'? Be bold and ask for discount given the circumstances - they can only say no

viccat · 01/05/2018 22:32

Have a look here OP. www.cats.org.uk/c4/findavet.asp

EachandEveryone · 01/05/2018 22:44

Do PDSA help in these circumstances? He’s gorgeous how old did they reckon?

Wolfiefan · 01/05/2018 22:46

Handsome boy! Maybe the wrong side of the M25 but if Katz Kastle are near you they may help.

Do love a tabby.
Enabling some more! Wink

Finders keepers, you win 👍

Want2beme · 02/05/2018 00:21

He is gorgeous. What a face. Looks like he has a big Tom head. I'm trying to do the same as you at the moment, but my stray only appears every few weeks & is very cautious. All of my cats have been from the streets and have pretty much got on, my current 2 being the exception, so that I have to keep them separate.

Sounds like the lady who's feeding him isn't committed to caring for him 100%, so, over to you, I thinkGrin. He is very sweet looking.

RamblinRosie · 02/05/2018 00:33

Oh dear, he's now yours!
