Stray Cat

Last week, a local stray somehow managed to get through our microchip catflap while we were out, and proceeded to eat our cat's dinner and then strolled into our lounge and sat himself on our sofa, all while our cat looked on in what I can only imagine was shock!

When I discovered him, he was under our bed, refusing to come out, but had obviously got some wounds on his face. After failing to tempt him out, I shut the door and left him in there overnight. The next morning, I managed to get him into a carrier and took him to the vets. They confirmed he was unneutered, unchipped, and that some of his wounds had turned into abscesses. I paid £100 for him to have an antibiotic injection and a checkup, and they suggested I release him with a paper collar on with my phone number in case he had an owner. Ideally he needs an op to sort out the abcesses, de-fleaing, worming, vacs, chip etc etc).

I released him in my garden and have been worrying about him ever since! He's visited us a few times since (although no more break-ins), and I understand a local lady has been feeding him for about a year.

My gut instinct is to catch him next time he comes over, take him to the vets, get him sorted, and try and gently introduce him to my cat and see how they get along. Has anyone had any luck doing this? My DH is not convinced and thinks it's unfair on our current cat (a rescue we got 6 months ago). If it didn't work out I would happily rehome him (the stray that is) - although that's probably easier said than done! Cats Protection have already confirmed they have a waiting list.

oh he is lovely nothing more heart tugging than a stray tom .3 years ago a ginger tom came round our garden .never owned a cat in my life .but took him to the vet phoned the cats protection they said can you keep him for a couple of weeks .yes i said i can do two weeks .three years later he is still here wonderful he is. needing to diet right now think he needs to understand he is no longer a stray and to stop milking the sympathy vote now right enough

POPholditdown · 02/05/2018 02:26

Oh what a lovely little face❤️

I have taken in a stray, kept them separate for about 2-3 weeks but they made friends themselves by playing tag under the kitchen door. The way they are now you’d think they were litter mates.

I hope it works out for this little guy.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 02/05/2018 07:24

I really think you have a new cat (and he's lovely.) My first cat came to me under very similar circumstances. I may be wrong but if a poorly cat breaks into your house I think it is against the law not to take him on Grin.
On a serious note it is worth shopping around for vets. There are two local vets near us (West of London just outside the M25). One is literally twice as expensive as the other on some like for like treatments and also took to charging for treatment they hadn't done. I've never paid anything like £1000 for having an infected abscess treated.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats

The £1000 bill was shocking. It did also include investigative X-rays and a tooth extraction to find the massive abscess however still excessive and I really don't know what we would have done if we didn't have insurance.

Aprilmightbemynewname · 02/05/2018 08:27

Would happily contribute to your new cat op!! Maybe you could set up a gofundme page with his story?

ireneadler101 · 02/05/2018 09:14

The lady who had been feeding him has been in touch this morning to say that she is going to try and catch him and take him to the vets. It should be fairly easy as he's going into her house through the catflap, which she thinks can just be set to in-only. How long do you think it's reasonable to wait for her to do this before I just get on and do it myself? 😊

It's quite a tricky situation, and I can't help but feel a bit annoyed that this lady has been feeding him for a year but hasn't taken any steps to work out if he was chipped or get him medical attention. It's only after I posted his pic on Facebook on a lost and found site and established that he was a stray that she's now promising to do something. Perhaps I'm just being harsh though - it is kind of her to have been feeding him all this time - I am probably just jealous that she might get to keep him 🤣.

Give her til the end of this week. If you're able to find out from her if she's done it or not, great, but I wouldn't leave it any longer. I think you're smitten, which is perfectly understandable, after all, he is one of the most handsome cats I've ever seenGrin. Do you think she'll take him to the same vet as yours? If so, give them a call as see if she's taken him in, then you'll know she's serious about him.

I'd have a word with her and tell her that you'd like to give him his forever homeWink

No sensible advice to add as I only have one cat , a neutered male who is terrified of anything else on four legs unless he can kill and eat it...... but oh my goodness- those cheeks !!!
It does sound like he may have chosen you though ... and if a cat like that appeared in my house without fighting with my own ( extremely unlikely 😬) I would take him in a heartbeat.
Hope something gets sorted for him soon and he finds the lovely home that he deserves.

Ski37 · 03/05/2018 21:29

Even better, he may already have found his lovely home with you ...(another enabler here !!! )

Incrediblehulky · 05/05/2018 12:42

Hello there! Your photos of this little chap are so wonderful! He's gorgeous! I had a similar situation many many years ago OP. I'd already had a lovely rescue cat for about 8 months when a very battered smelly tom cat marched through the back door, ate my cats food and went to sleep in her bed! To cut a long story short after a couple of months of feeding him I managed to get him into a cage (with difficulty as you couldn't touch him or he'd lash out!) and took him to the vets where he was neutered, de-wormed, de-fleed, given antibiotics for infected gums and another infection. He came home with me and never left! The vet thought he was about 2 years old at the time. I had this wonderful boy for 12 years until he sadly died of heart faliure and left me heartbroken 😢. He became the most loyal, affectionate and beautiful boy and I am so grateful he found me. Sadly my other beautiful girl cat that so graciously accepted this boy into her home/ territory died a couple of months ago from cancer at 15 - heartbroken again 😢. I know its a sentimental perspective on things and not everyone's view but I really feel that if a cat finds you it's meant to be and you are very lucky! 😁 really good luck with whatever you decide!

ireneadler101 · 05/05/2018 15:27

My DH is adamant that keeping him would be unfair on our own cat, and despite my protestations, he's digging his heels in 🤨. So I've managed to get him a place at the local animal rescue shelter on Friday next week. Now I've just got to catch him again 😁. Will be sad not to keep him but fingers crossed he will now find a lovely new home. Wish me luck!

He may be chipped and have a home. Cats go missing for years.

ireneadler101 · 05/05/2018 15:36

No chip sadly, and nobody recognises him on the local lost and found Facebook site.

A stray starting coming into my garden a couple of years ago. I fed him & put his pic in the local pet shop. Turns out his family live 5 min away but he'd left them a few months earlier. I took him back but 2 days later he was at mine again. Tried again & again but he ended up back at mine every time. I started feeding him, made him a shelter outside & he spent a few months there. My 2 got used to him being around. He gradually moved into the house & he's been here 2 years now. He's currently curled up asleep on my bed with one of mine. They're all friends now.
I think your cat needs a friend to keep him company op & will be upset if you don't let his new friend stay.

Aprilmightbemynewname · 05/05/2018 17:38

Read an awful story last week about a cat that was handed in, turned out 'family' had moved and left him, vet rang them and they said to pts as they didn't want him back!!
That cat looks so appreciative of his new dcl (dear cat lady) I hope you can keep him.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 05/05/2018 19:53

I hope that you can talk DH around OP. If not, I assume the shelter is a no kill one?

ireneadler101 · 05/05/2018 22:28

Yes it's a no-kill shelter, I think I will shed a little tear when I hand him over 😣, but DH is currently not budging! Now just the small matter of tempting the cat back again...

Incrediblehulky · 05/05/2018 22:46

How old is he - did the vet give any idea?

EachandEveryone · 05/05/2018 23:06

I thought your cat was ok with him? Its a shame isnt that he cant have a chance to be with you esoecially as he knows you. Will they let you know if no one takes him? Does the neighbour definately not want him? It seems such an upheaval. I know im going soft,

Want2beme · 05/05/2018 23:35

Oh, what a shame. He is so gorgeous. You'll miss him. Have you seen him today? Haven't been able to catch my stray yet, but he is coming back more often than he used to, so hopefully soon I'll be able to get him to the vet. He's in a sorry state, poor wee thing.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 06/05/2018 10:24

Keep working on DH ... he won't be the first litter tray DH to come around.

EachandEveryone · 06/05/2018 12:09

Or just pretend you havent seen him whilst secretly socialising them when dh is at work!

Aprilmightbemynewname · 07/05/2018 10:33

Imo (anyone agree?) keep dcat and rehome your dh.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 07/05/2018 11:33

I reckon existing cat gets the casting vote ...

ireneadler101 · 08/05/2018 08:17

All good suggestions 😁 He hasn't made an appearance since Saturday night at the moment....
