My boy Harry is very very itchy all the time, and he's losing more fur than usual. I've inspected his skin as much as he'll allow (he's not a very friendly boy!) and his skin seems quite dry..

Can't get into the vets until end of next week, anyone have any ideas what it could be? He doesn't have fleas or a tic (sp?) that I can see. Photo for cuteness

What food does he eat? Is it grain free? Has he been flea treated?

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 03/03/2018 21:45

His flea and worm treatment is up to date. He eats Whiskas and has done for years now

Is he allergic to fish? It’s quite a common allergy in cats.

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 03/03/2018 21:49

I don't think so he loves tuna and has had that maybe once a week for a long time, the skin problems are recent Sad

Might be a food allergy. Mine kept itching and scratching and on closer inspection she had dandruff. Shes now on prescribed food from vets and doing much better.

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 03/03/2018 23:56

Thanks @Elusiveone hopefully the vet can recommend something then

Lamb is also a common cat allergy.

Weedsnseeds1 · 04/03/2018 13:35

Has he been squashed up against a radiator in the cold weather, quietly scorching himself?

Bluesheep8 · 04/03/2018 14:24

My boy got really itchy last year. Vet advised it was an allergy but wasn't sure what. He gave him a steroid injection and advised to give a small amount of piriton in his food if it flared up again. The vet did say that we could pay for any number of tests to identify what he was reacting to but that it was likely it was something in his immediate environment, e.g a plant outside etc so it would be far better to treat the symptom as and when it flared up. It hasn't happened since, now I think about it...hope he's ok.

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 04/03/2018 16:07

Thanks @Bluesheep8 I hope it's just something like that then where a Piriton will sort him out he must be feeling terrible itching all the time.

I'll update after the vets thanks everyone

Hope he's ok o.p and that it is a treatable allergy. I remember my boy getting really distressed and upset when he was so itchy.

shelleyhart · 05/03/2018 14:02

my cat has had the same thing! Didn't want to keep giving him steroids. i changed his food to grain free, and also used this stuff called "non Stinky stuff" I put it in his food and touch wood no clumps of fur getting pulled out!

ifonly4 · 05/03/2018 14:40

See what the vet says, but it might be worth adding a fish oil for cats that contains the Omegas.

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 05/03/2018 18:57

Which food is grain free? I may have to try that then

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 05/03/2018 19:02

If he likes whiskas then there is a variety that doesn't have grains: think there is a meaty one too without grains

This is grain free too

Whiskers is awful food, it's got hardly any meat in it, is full of sugar and contains grains. It's quite possible he has become intolerant from repeated eating of products he can't digest. You can high meat content, grain free food on zooplus for the same price you'll be paying for whiskars and will be much much better for him!

CatchingBabies · 05/03/2018 19:13

By the way he is stunning! Is he a bicolour BSH?

dementedpixie · 05/03/2018 19:13

Did you read the ingredients I posted? The variety I took a picture of has no grains or sugar

dementedpixie · 05/03/2018 19:16

Mine don't like the 'good stuff' and won't eat pate style. I give them 90% meat dry food and then Sheba or gourmet perle or that whiskas one I showed above

CatchingBabies · 05/03/2018 19:16

Dementedpixie
That still has only 4% meat however.

Look at this, 50% meat, no grain, no sugar and cheaper per 100g than whiskers.

CatchingBabies · 05/03/2018 19:18

This one is good for cats that won't eat pate food, it comes in gravy or jelly and is high meat content.

dementedpixie · 05/03/2018 19:19

No it doesn't. It has 4% named meat with rest being meat and animal derivatives which is still meat

dementedpixie · 05/03/2018 19:21

I have tried both of those and they won't eat them. I gave feringa kitten food and they stopped eating it. They sniffed the other one you linked to but wouldn't eat it

CatchingBabies · 05/03/2018 19:34

Haha fussy cats! If only they knew what was good for them!

Mine eat ferringa, bozita, animonda carny and Applaws all with no problem.
