Harry's Results

I've just had the results of Harry's blood test for his heart and it's not good. His proBNP level is 344 and anything over 270 is classed as serious heart disease. I'm sitting at my desk at work in tears as I don't know what to do. As far as I can see I've got three options:

  1. Get a second opinion
  2. Have him referred for tests to see how serious it is and decide on treatment
  3. Leave him be.

Please don't flame me but I'm leaning towards option 3. He's 13 years old, has been through more sedations, tests and operations than I care to remember over the last two years and is absolutely find in himself. He's eating, drinking and playing, doesn't get out of breath and, if he hasn't got long, I want him to be happy in that time, not in and out of vets all the time.

Good luck Harry! Be a good boy for the nice vet.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 20/03/2018 16:51

I've heard from the vet and Harry is doing fine. He didn't have to be sedated and we have an appointment to see the vet for his discharge appointment at 6.15. Only 1hr 25m until I can pick him up!

Oh thank goodness. It's less than 1hr 25 already! Grin

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 20/03/2018 16:59

I'm worried what the vet will tell us, but I feel more confident than I've done for a long time. If it's bad news I have faith in the vet to help us manage it.

Keeping it all crossed. Xx

Toddlerteaplease · 20/03/2018 18:01

Fatty says she's really proud if the darling boy, for keeping still!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 20/03/2018 19:07

THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH HIS HEART!

We still don’t know what’s caused the cough but it’s not his heart. The vet has told us to treat him for lung worm, although it’s unlikely he has that, and monitor him but other than that it’s carry on as normal.

Harry says a big thank you to Fatty for the tip about lying still. He is a bit upset though as they have butchered his lush fur! It has proved my long held theory that he would be pink and grey all over without his fur!

Thank you to everyone for all your support, I really don’t know how I’d cope without you all Flowers

I'm very pleased for the lad. Smile

FANTASTIC NEWS! For Harry Cake Flowers

Wolfiefan · 20/03/2018 19:35

That is absolutely fantastic news!! My dog took to coughing for a while. Allergy related?!
So pleased for you and him.

Toddlerteaplease · 20/03/2018 19:56

That is absolutely brilliant news. So pleased for you all! No more stress for you humans now please Harry!

cozietoesie · 20/03/2018 20:18

I think we need a new photo of the lad now. Smile

YetAnotherSpartacus · 21/03/2018 08:40

Yay Harry! Great news!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 21/03/2018 11:48

He didn’t feel like posing last night so I’ll try and get a picture later! I did get one of his new haircut though...

Fatty says, not to worry about his hair cut he's still gorgeous. (And it's neater than the one her mean human gave her last night)

cozietoesie · 21/03/2018 23:29

It's hardly noticeable! Smile

cozietoesie · 21/03/2018 23:30

PS - he has such a glossy coat.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 22/03/2018 09:20

He has got rather stunning fur even if I am biased! He takes great pride in his grooming routine and I would definitely know something was wrong if he stopped taking care of himself. Even after he fractured his jaw and it was wired he was trying to wash.

He's still refusing pose!

A lot has happened under my bridge lately - remind me what the initial blood readings ended up meaning?

He's gorgeous even as a shaved pussy.

The locum vet said the test results showed he had serious heart disease, however his new vet said it showed there was something that might require further investigation.

My main worry is that the new vet hasn’t seen the x rays he had done a couple of weeks ago. Then again he was happy with the scan results and could have requested the x ray or done it again. I was very confident he knew what he was talking about!

OP posts:
Toddlerteaplease · 22/03/2018 16:29

The scan is far more useful in diagnosing heart disease. The only thing the x ray shoes Is fluid collection and heart enlargement.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 22/03/2018 16:45

The original vet said there was fluid around the lungs (or heart, I was told both) but the new vet said the heart chambers and the thickness was all fine.

Another piece of good news, Petplan have paid out for the scan on Tuesday. Our old vet hasn't submitted the claims yet so I'm hoping Petplan link them when they do.

Toddlerteaplease · 22/03/2018 18:15

That's good news. How much did the scan cost? Maia's was £469

Toddlerteaplease · 22/03/2018 18:16

My form has a box for new claim or continuing claim.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 22/03/2018 19:31

We got a bargain - £225!

The form does have a continuing claim box but we had no plans to change vets and left it for the original practice to fill in as they’d done in the past. This is actually now 3 claims, 1 we’d paid at the old vet as was less than our excess, the second one which we didn’t pay as it took us over the excess and the vet is claiming and the latest one which has already been approved!
